ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tropical Storm Iota formed Friday in the Caribbean and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches Central America. Some 220 children from separated families remain in custody, four months after a judge ordered the US government to reunite the immigrant families it split up at the border.And 14 of those children were only just added to the list the government uses to track reunifications, officials revealed in court documents filed late Thursday night.The acknowledgment that more families were separated than previously reported is likely to spark concern from advocates, who've frequently questioned the accuracy of the government's record-keeping in the aftermath of the family separation crisis.A review of records prompted the Office of Refugee Resettlement to add 14 more children to its tally, the court filing said. Government attorneys said they've "been careful to re-evaluate and refine the numbers" as they learn new information.The numbers appear in the latest federal court filing in the American Civil Liberties Union's class-action case over family separations. They come as a caravan of migrants, which includes many families, treks through Mexico, bound for the US border -- and as the Trump administration considers a new pilot program that could result in the separations of kids and parents once again."Given the lack of a plan or system to keep track of families, it's no surprise the original numbers were inaccurate," said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project and the lead attorney in the case.Advocates have warned that inaccurate statistics could have serious consequences, prolonging family separations and making it harder for the public to track the government's progress in complying with the court's order.Officials have stressed that the numbers are constantly changing, and attorneys are still debating them as they meet to sort out the next steps. Sitting in the front seat of his white Ryder semi-truck, Graig Morin often has some of the best views of Maine as he crisscrosses the state making deliveries. But the best seat in this cab belongs to his dog, Lilly.Morin is the owner of Brown Dog Carriers in Biddeford, Maine, where dogs aren’t just a part of the company name, they’re part of the payroll.“My wife got her when she was a puppy. She’s 12-years-old now,” Morin said looking at Lilly, a chocolate lab, whose front whiskers have started growing gray with time.Lilly likely does not know that an entire business is named after her, but she has provided plenty of company over the years. Morin estimates the pair has traveled the better part of 500,000 miles together. She’s become such a fixture in his passenger seat that customers often wonder when she’s not around.“A lot of time at deliveries I’ll get, ‘Where’s the dog?’” he added.These days, the trips have become more frequent.In the spring, Morin and Lilly started seeing a massive uptick in business. Deliveries were skyrocketing with people quarantined at home. At the same time, though, Morin also saw other small businesses struggling and wanted to help.“Why not? Employers need to be looking at the state and local laws to determine whether masks are mandatory. I know that several states have mandatory mask requirements in public spaces, so of course they’ll want to look at those laws to make sure they're complying with them," says Amber Clayton, Knowledge Center Director for the Society for Human Resources Management.Clayton says employers will also need to consider employees who may not be able to wear a mask, whether it be for medical or other reasons."Employers may have to potentially provide a reasonable accommodation in those situations. That might look like allowing the person to work from home, taking leave or modifying their workspaces where they're working within an area that is maybe not as much public facing," says Clayton.For medical reasons, employers could require a doctor's note. Whether it's an employee handbook or company-wide email, employers should have some type of documentation so employees and any customers coming into the office are aware of expectations when it comes to wearing face coverings. Valerie Keels, who heads up her HR department at Gavi in Washington, DC, has developed a mask-wearing policy for her office."The building has imposed those restrictions, as well, in the common areas so when people come into the building they have to wear a mask. When they go into the elevator they have to wear a mask. So it's just consistent with what's going in the building," says Keels.Keels has what they call a "Code Red" which means people can come into the office if they register online. It helps them keep track of the number of people in the office space. Once they get to the office, their temperature is taken and they're given a mask to wear for when it's needed.When you're in an enclosed office space, you can take off your mask. "And even when you're at your own work space because we're also respecting social distancing," says Keels.As for enforcing a mask policy, some businesses could come across people who disagree with a face covering policy."Employers have the responsibility to keep the workplaces safe for their employees and if this is something that's required and the employee refused to wear it, then there needs to be something in place to address that - whether it's sending the employee home or providing leave, or making modifications to the worksite," says Clayton.It's important for employers to work with people and their individual situations before resorting to reprimands.
