BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese commercial banks will be allowed to trade gold futures in the domestic market, according to a notice released on the regulator's official website here on Monday.     China gold futures trading was launched in January, but domestic banks were barred from trading by the China Banking Regulatory Commission.     According to the notice, domestic banks that meet certain requirements, such as having capital adequacy ratio of more than 8percent, can apply for a trading permit.     "That's great news for the gold futures market, which is not operating that well," said Hu Yuyue, an expert with Beijing Technology and Business University.     "Commercial banks can provide more liquidity and stability to the market, after all, they hold huge capital," said Hu.     "Gold futures trading can also help domestic banks to improve competitiveness against overseas banks as financial derivatives are supposed to be the largest revenue sources for leading banks," he said.     Non-interest income usually accounts for at least 50 percent of bank revenues in developed countries and the proportion can reach 80 percent for some banks.     However, Chinese banks depend heavily on the margins between deposits and loans.

Viruses wreaked havoc on at least 1 million personal computers during the weeklong National Day holiday, according to Jiangmin Co, a leading Chinese antivirus company.The company's monitoring system detected that more than 118,000 computers crashed on October 6 alone."Viruses have been extremely active during the long vacation because more people chose to stay at home and surf the Internet, shopping online or playing online games," He Gongdao, an antivirus expert at Jiangmin, said on Monday."More than 24,000 types of viruses were detected during the week," he said.He said computer users should be more aware of viruses that could be passed on through movable disks.Another antivirus company, Kingsoft, alerted the online community to a new virus it dubbed the "ultimate killer to antivirus software".The virus, a kind of Trojan, is capable of hijacking all kinds of antivirus software when it successfully attacks a computer."It will also automatically search the keywords, including 'antivirus, Kingsoft and Kaspersky', and coercively close the programs, Li Tiejun, an antivirus software engineer of Kingsoft, said."The virus has been supported and spread by a group of people who have developed a systematic and standardized business operation to make profit," Li said. Virus controllers could detect the IP addresses of each computer, he added.The new virus, which affected about 40,000 computers a day, will remain a critical threat to many computer users even after the holiday, Li said.According to the latest survey conducted by the Ministry of Public Security, China has encountered a rising Internet security problem over the past three years, mainly triggered by a growing number of profit-driven computer virus writers, hackers and illegal traders.Some 65.7 percent of 15,000 companies polled had suffered Internet security problems from May last year to May this year, 11.7 percentage points higher than before.

The highly anticipated Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway will begin construction next month, a Ministry of Railways official said.The ministry source, who did not want to be named, confirmed in a phone interview yesterday that preparations are now being made for a ceremony to commence construction of the system.Based on that timeframe, the railway will be completed by 2013. [China Daily]According to figures released on Friday by the municipal civil affairs bureau, the city has 2.36 million people aged 60 or above, equivalent to about 15 percent of the total.Bureau spokesman Guo Xusheng said although the figure had risen by 340,000 from last year, the rate of growth could accelerate in the future, putting pressure on the city's social security system.A report by Beijing's working committee for the aged released late last year forecast the city's gray-haired population would reach 6.5 million by 2050, meaning one out of every three residents would be over 60.Guo told a government press conference the reason why there are now more elderly people is simply because people are living longer. At the end of last year, the average life expectancy for a Beijinger was 80.2 years, up 2.3 years on 2002.Yang Hui, a researcher with Beijing's Renmin University of China, warned that an aging society puts "great pressure" on the city's medical resources and a "burden" on the workforce."If the city draws too much fresh blood from the outside, it will face anther big problem - a booming population," he said.According to figures released on Thursday by the Beijing statistics bureau, at the end of last year, Beijing's population was 16.33 million, up 520,000 on 2006, the biggest annual increase in six years.Guo said the government had taken steps to prepare the city for its rapidly aging population.Last year, the authorities allocated 11.7 million yuan (.6 million) to build and renovate homes for the elderly. Poor planning not natural events was to blame for a spate of deadly accidents recently, safety chief Li Yizhong said.In the latest major incident, 172 miners are still trapped underground nearly three weeks after floodwater inundated the Huayuan mine in Xintai, East China's Shandong Province.
