HANGZHOU, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Fire engulfed an electric appliance store in east China's Zhejiang Province Friday night, local police said.Flames broke out at around 8:30 p.m. at a store of GOME, China's leading electric appliance franchiser, in downtown Jinhua City, Zhejiang, according to the police.The store occupies the first three floors of a 13-storey residential building. The store was in business when the fire broke out."The fire has engulfed six floors of the building so far. At least 10 people from the upper residential apartments have been transferred to safer places by firefighters as of 9:50 p.m.," said a witness.The witness said there were people trapped on the 12th floor of the building, but the exact number of the trapped remained unknown.Ambulances are waiting on the road. So far, no casualties were reported.Fire fighters continue rescuing people from the upper floors by stairs.

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) has ordered measures to offset the impact of inflation on "people with difficulties" to ensure their ability to subsist, especially during the New Year and the Spring Festival.Rising food costs alongside other factors have been driving up China's inflation. For instance, the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 5.1 percent last month, hitting a 28-month high.In a recent notice to local civil affairs authorities, the MCA ordered "effective measures" to minimize the impact of inflation on low-income groups and other groups of people having financial difficulties.Civil affairs authorities should set proper living allowances for these groups by assessing the impact of rising prices on their lives, the notice said.Further, a mechanism that ensures living allowances are raised at the same rate as rising prices should be established, and the amount of living allowances should be raised.The notice also ordered local civil affairs authorities to rescue the homeless in cities and help them throughout the winter.The Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year, will fall on Feb.3, 2011. BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese president Hu Jintao has urged medical units to take all efforts to cure those wounded when fighting a deadly fire on a grassland in the country's southwest.A strong gust of wind whipped up a blaze that engulfed fire fighters and local residents who were trying to put out embers in a mountain valley in Daofu County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province Sunday afternoon.The fire left 22 dead and injured many before it was finally put out Monday morning. The dead included soldiers and civilians.According to Li Bing with the provincial health bureau, the injured have been sent to the provincial capital of Chengdu for treatment.
