U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wisconsin, wants to give citizens the option to donate to building a border wall on the United States-Mexico border and has introduced legislation to allow for crowdsourced fundraising. Grothman announced in a news release that he has introduced a bill called "The People’s Border Wall Fund Act" which would allow the public to contribute to building a border wall. The federal government is in a partial shutdown while Democrats and Republican President Donald Trump are at a standstill over a spending plan that would include a package to build a border wall. Grothman’s plan would create a trust in the Department of Treasury that allows for public donations to be used to build a border wall. 737
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court announced Monday that it will hear a dispute over a Philadelphia Catholic agency that won't place foster children with same-sex couples. The justices will review an appeals court ruling that upheld the city's decision to stop placing children with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's agency because it would not permit same-sex couples to serve as foster parents. The appeals court ruled the city did not target the agency because of its religious beliefs but acted only to enforce its own nondiscrimination policy in the face of what seemed to be a clear violation. The case will not be argued until the fall. 656

Two children died on the same day in two different states after being left in hot cars.A 21-month-old boy was found on Friday in a vehicle in Booneville, Mississippi, according to a statement from Booneville Police Chief Michael Ramey.Ramey said although the vehicle was in a parking lot between a daycare and an adult daycare facility, neither were involved in the death. It appears the child was left in the vehicle at a workplace all day before the car arrived at the parking lot and the child was discovered, Ramey said.Another child died the same day after being found unresponsive in a vehicle in Lindenwold, New Jersey. The 22-month-old girl died after she was discovered in a minivan outside a commuter rail station in the Philadelphia suburb around 3:38 p.m., officials said. It's unknown how long the child was in the vehicle before she was found and no charges have been filed, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.Onlookers in Lindenwold watched as police wrapped crime tape around surrounding vehicles and draped a tarp over the open sliding door of the van, CNN affiliate WPVI-TV reported."My heart just broke," said Ashely Iwu, whose car was enclosed within the police perimeter. "I can barely stand outside and so who can imagine what the temperatures are like in the car -- probably in the hundreds."Heatstroke kills 38 children every year on average, according to the National Safety Council. These include instances in which a child has been forgotten in a vehicle, when they accidentally lock themselves in a car or trunk, and in a small number of cases, when a child has been intentionally left in a car.Since 1998, more than 800 children have died from pediatric vehicular heatstroke, which occurs when a child's body temperature rises to 104 degrees. A temperature of 107 degrees is lethal, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The majority of heatstroke deaths occur by accident, according to NoHeatStroke.org, a data site run by San Jose University's Department of Meteorology & Climate Science. More than half happen when parents forget about their child in the backseat. Another 26% of children die after entering a vehicle on their own, and about 19% are left there intentionally.Last year was the deadliest year for child vehicular heatstroke in 20 years, with 52 children between 7 weeks and 5 years old dying after being left in cars, according to Amber Rollins, director of KidsandCars.org, a national nonprofit. 2505
Whole Foods employees are protesting their working conditions. They staged a mass “sick out” on Tuesday. The group tweeted a list of requests for Amazon – which owns Whole Foods. It included guaranteed paid-leave for workers who self-quarantine, health care coverage for part-time and seasonal workers, and “hazard pay” that’s double what they normally are paid during scheduled hours. Whole Foods has boosted pay by an hour, but workers say that’s not enough. "Hazard pay" is extra compensation when employees are required to work in potentially dangerous conditions. Human resources experts say it's something that wouldn't normally be considered for grocery store or warehouse workers. That's changing because of the pandemic."The risk is elevated and it’s elevated now for way more jobs than we ever planned for,” said Scott Cawood, CEO of World at Work. “Like I said, working at a grocery store, we’re coming into contact with the public. Any of these jobs right now have bumped up the elevation of the dangerous level and would fit into what we think of hazard pay."Some workers at these essential businesses are already receiving “hazard pay.” Big companies like Costco, Target and Walmart are giving employees extra cash. Others are looking at different ways to help."We’ve seen organizations, for example, sending toilet paper to employees, new childcare funds coming open, different types of bonuses being put in place to help,” said Cawood. “We’ve got transportation allowances happening all over. Many benefits that are happening right now are outside the traditional scope because this is such an extreme situation."While many workers welcome the additional pay, some still don't feel comfortable going to work.Congress is working on legislation that would allow employees to refuse hazard pay, but still be able to come back to work after this health crisis. 1887
we’re thinking about you. we believe restaurants will have an increasingly essential role in feeding our country. so whether you’re ordering at BK or elsewhere, use minimum contact methods like drive-thrus, pick-up or delivery. take care, https://t.co/tWSdfUbbGucc: @whitehouse— Burger King (@BurgerKing) March 17, 2020 332
