A large number of rescue and relief workers and survivors are now living there, increasing the risk of intestinal and respiratory infectious diseases," an unnamed official from the ministry said Thursday.The official said corpses and dead animals buried under the mud may easily decay under the high temperatures, worsening the epidemic-prevention situation.Although wells have been dug up to ensure water supply, the ministry said sterilization work is arduous as the water may be contaminated during transportation and preservation.Vaccines and their refrigeration facilities, along with the networks that report infectious diseases, were destroyed in the mudslides, according to the ministry.However, with the arrival of new refrigerators and various vaccines, the first vaccination center in the county since the disaster has been set up.As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the death toll from the mudslides had risen to 1,144 with 600 still missing.Furthermore, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has sent more than 20 experts to Zhouqu in a bid to prevent environmental disasters.The water quality of the Bailong River remains normal, according to the ministry.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam agreed Thursday to properly deal with the maritime territorial issues in the South China Sea.This is one of the five consensus decisions made at the fourth meeting of the China-Vietnam steering committee on cooperation, which was co-chaired by Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.China and Vietnam signed a package of agreements on the demarcation of their 1,300-kilometer land boundary last November. HUZHONG, Heilongjiang, July 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 20,000 firemen are battling lighting-triggered forest fires in northeast China as continuous hot weather undermines their efforts, forest fire prevention authorities said.The fire, spotted Saturday, continued to spread Wednesday due to high temperatures after having weakened overnight, said Sun Zhagen, deputy director of China's National Forest Fire Prevention Headquarters.The forest fire first occurred in a part of the Greater Hinggan Mountains in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and then extended to the neighboring Heilongjiang Province.Rescuers were still struggling to put out the fire at more than 30 sites in the two regions, said a spokesman with the fire fighting headquarters at Huzhong, a major fire site.Further, another 6,000 fire fighters and additional equipment would be sent to control the fire in Heilongjiang, said the spokesman."As it is too hot to get close to the scene to put out the fire, we have to build fire barriers during the day and battle the blaze at night," said Pang Zhiqiang, a forest policeman.Sparks are being buried under the burnt debris of wood, often as deep as 30 cm and easily set on fire again by wind, said rescuers at Huzhong District."We felt thirsty, dizzy and had trouble breathing after staying in the burnt forest for just 10 minutes", one fireman said.Each of the rescuers, carrying about 25 kg of equipment on his back, could only carry four bottles of drinking water, a rescuer with the Heilongjiang forestry police force told a Xinhua reporter. "If the bottle water is not enough, we drink the river water, though there are worms in it."Some thirsty fire fighters said they even dug into the ground and breathed in the moisture. BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic corn supply was adequate, and a recent price increase was the result of market speculation, a senior official told Xinhua Thursday.Shang Qiangmin, director at the China National Grain and Oils Information Center, said both the supply and corn reserves were adequate in China and the government was determined to regulate the corn market."Imbalance between corn supply and demand is a misjudgement," Shang said.Although floods that ravaged the country's northeastern regions in late July have caused adverse impacts on regional corn growing, final output was expected to increase from one year earlier due to the expanding of planting areas, Shang said."China has enough corn reserves to meet market demand," he said.The buying boom in the northeastern region is currently caused by enterprises' increasing corn stocks on speculation of price increase, he said.According to Shang, corn stocks at major grain enterprises in northeastern Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased by 5.12 million tonnes at the end of July compared with one year earlier.The Chinese government has strengthened macro control of corn market by increasing supply and cracking down on illegal activities that force up corn prices.As the world's major corn producer and consumer, China's annual corn production and consumption both exceed 150 million tonnes.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars).
