WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama announced Thursday that his administration is committing an addition 50 million U.S. dollars in funding for domestic HIV/AIDS treatment and care.Obama also set a new target of helping six million people in countries hardest hit by the HIV virus get access to life-saving antiretroviral drugs by the end of 2013, increasing the original U. S. goal by two million."We can beat this disease,"' Obama declared at a World AIDS Day event in Washington. Former Presidents George W. When new infections among young, black, gay men increase by nearly 50 percent in three years, we need to do more to show them that their lives matter.''Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also told Xinhua recently that in the United States, the AIDS epidemic has plateaued, but it is still at "unacceptably high" level.About 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV and only 28 percent of them have the infection under control, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this week."The fight is not over," Obama declared, but "the federal government can't do this alone." He called on state governments, pharmaceutical companies, and private foundations, to do their part to help Americans get access to all the life-saving treatments.Obama also appealed to global partners to step up their efforts to end AIDS, some 30 years after the epidemic first surfaced. BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 14,976 cases of medical disputes were handled by the country's emerging third-party mediation organizations, with over 80 percent of them being successfully settled, said Vice Health Minister Zhang Mao.Zhang told Xinhua recently in an exclusive interview that China has to date set up 1,358 third-party mediation organizations to settle medical disputes.The third-party mediation organizations have come into being since late 2009 which usually hire retired doctors, medical experts and lawyers to bridge the communication gaps between doctors and patients and direct patients to resort to legal means in settling medical disputes.The third-party mediation system for medical disputes is a latest reform to ease doctor-patient tension that sometimes escalate into violence.Such incidents erupted several times this year, and in an extreme case in September, a 43-year-old surgeon in Beijing Tongren Hospital was stabbed by a patient into serious injury. The attack was believed to have been triggered by a medical dispute in which the patient alleged that the surgeon had committed malpractice during an operation.

VIENNA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A sculpture of late Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was presented to the UN Office in Vienna (UNOV) Friday to celebrate "50 Years of Human Spaceflight," the theme of the World Space Week 2011.In 1961, Gagarin completed an orbit around the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft, serving as a pioneer of human spaceflight.The sculpture is a gift from the Russian government and would be placed at the Permanent Exhibit of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).Attendants of the ceremony include UNOV Director-General Yury Fedotov, UNOOSA Director Mazlan Othman and Head of the Russian Permanent Mission Vladimir Voronkov."Outer space is one of the most exciting and challenging topics, and perhaps of all the important topics on the agenda of the United Nations, none quite captures our imagination like outer space," Othman said in her statement.Meanwhile, speaking highly of Gagarin's achievement 50 years ago, Fedotov stressed that the purpose of the development and utilization of outer space must be to the benefit of all mankind.The UN official said that relevant UN agencies would provide technical assistance to all countries to develop outer space and ensure the benefits in peaceful purpose.On Dec. 6, 1999, the 55th United Nations General Assembly declared the World Space Week to be held every year during Oct. 4-10.
