BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A food company in east China's Shandong Province has been allowed to resume export of bean stuffing to Japan following earlier suspicion of food poisoning, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said Friday.     In a brief statement posted on its Web site, the GAQSIQ said the Japanese authorities could not conclude that the food-poisoning symptoms of two Japanese people resulted from consumption of the bean stuffing from Qingdao Fushijia Food Co., Ltd. in Shandong.     According to the GAQSIQ, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare said Dec. 17 that Japan decided to lift import ban on Fushijia's products since the Chinese side had found no quality problem with Fushijia's bean stuffing. The Japanese side had also not discovered any harmful chemical substance in imported products.     Japan banned the import of Fushijia's bean stuffing in September after two employees of a Japanese food producer importing Fushijia's products became ill.

YICHANG, Hubei, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Three Gorges Project has completed trial water storage operations for the year, with the water level in the reservoir exceeding 172 meters.     As of Tuesday, the water level had risen 27.3 m since Sept. 28,when this year's storage plan began, said the developer of the massive water conservancy project, the China Three Gorges Project Corp. (CTGPC) on Friday.     The water-raising measures ended on Tuesday when the water behind the dam reached 172.3 m and the reservoir held more than 19.3 billion cubic meters of water. The reservoir then began to discharge water.     Generally speaking, the trial operation, which is a test of quality, went well. The structure, generators and shipping locks were all in normal condition and the water quality was not affected, said a CTGPC statement.     The water level is expected to reach 175 m in 2009 when the Three Gorges project is completed.     At 156 m, the target level for the second phase, the reservoir could be fully functional in terms of flood control, power generation and navigation control.     Launched in 1993, construction of the gigantic concrete structure of the dam was completed and began to store water in May2006.     Previously, the reservoir's temporary cofferdams held water at a depth of 135 to 139 m.     The Three Gorges Project, with a budget equivalent to 22.5 billion U.S. dollars, is a multi-functional water control system built at the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River.     Its main works are a dam, a five-tier ship lock and 26 hydropower turbo-generators.     The dam will have 14 turbo-generators on the left bank and 12 on the right. Combined, they will produce 84.7 billion kw of electricity annually.     There are plans to add six more turbines by 2012.     As of June, 1.24 million residents had been relocated to make way for the dam construction.

CHENGDU, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- With red lanterns hanging from the eaves, the bangs of firecrackers outside, and tables of delicious food, the Chinese people, including millions of quake survivors, observed the Lunar New Year eve in the traditional way.     In the prefab of quake survivor Hu Suqiong, a dozen family members gathered at the table on which were traditional local foods such as preserved ham and sausage.     "I really had not expected that I could celebrate the Spring Festival with everyone in such a good prefab room," Hu's husband Chen Ziyi toasted Sunday noon's "reunion" (tuanyuan in Chinese) meal", which take place among Chinese families on the Lunar New Year's Eve.     The "Qinjian Family" prefab housing area where Hu Suqiong lives near the downtown of Dujiangyan City has 120,000 people. Dujiangyang was a worst-hit area in Sichuan Province in last May's devastating earthquake which left more than 80,000 people dead or missing.     "I feel rather satisfied and thank all those who have helped me," Chen said.     Spring Festival, which falls on Monday, is the most important holiday for Chinese. People meet relatives and eat dumplings and various delicious food. They set off firecrackers to scare off evil spirits.     For Chinese, the year 2008 was both a painful year and a proud year in which the 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12 in Sichuan caused huge casualties and damage, and the successful Olympic Games in August made China a focus in the world.     In Longxi Village, Wenchuan County in Sichuan, the quake epicenter, 37-year-old Chen Shixue kept his simple temporary house warm with an electric heater. WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday called on the international community to make concerted efforts to tide over difficulties arising from the global financial crisis.     Hu made the appeal while addressing a summit meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) on financial markets and the world economy in Washington.     RESTORE MARKET CONFIDENCE     President Hu urged the international community to take all necessary steps to promptly restore market confidence and stop the spread and development of the financial crisis.     "The international financial crisis has now spread from some parts of the world to the entire globe, from developed countries to emerging markets, and from the financial sector to the real economy," said Hu, who arrived here Friday for the G20 summit.     "To effectively deal with the financial crisis, all countries should strengthen confidence and intensify coordination and cooperation," he stressed.     To deal with the crisis, Hu said major developed countries "should undertake their due responsibilities and obligations, implement macroeconomic policies that are conducive to economic and financial stability and growth both at home and internationally, take active steps to stabilize their own and the international financial markets and safeguard investors' interests."     "Meanwhile, we should all enhance macroeconomic policy coordination, expand economic and financial information sharing, and deepen cooperation in international financial regulation so as to create necessary conditions for stability in both domestic and international markets," Hu added.     REFORM INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM     Hu urged the international community to earnestly draw lessons from the ongoing financial crisis and, based on full consultations among all stakeholders, undertake necessary reform of the international financial system.     "Reform of the international financial system should aim at establishing a new international financial order that is fair, just, inclusive and orderly and fostering an institutional environment conducive to sound global economic development," Hu said.     He said the reform should be conducted in a comprehensive, balanced, incremental and result-oriented manner.     "A comprehensive reform is one that has a general design and includes measures to improve not only the international financial system, monetary system and financial institutions, but also international financial rules and procedures," he noted.     "A balanced reform is one that is based on overall consideration and seeks a balance among the interests of all parties," Hu said.     "An incremental reform is one that seeks gradual progress," said the president, adding that it should proceed in a phased manner, starting with the easier issues, and achieve the final objectives of reform through sustained efforts.     "A result-oriented reform is one that lays emphasis on practical results. All reform measures should contribute to international financial stability and global economic growth as well as the well being of people in all countries," he stressed.     Based on those considerations, Hu listed four priorities in reforming the international financial system -- stepping up international cooperation in financial regulation; advancing reform of international financial institutions; encouraging regional financial cooperation; and improving the international currency system.     HELP DEVELOPING COUNTRIES COPE WITH CRISIS     President Hu also called for international efforts to help developing countries and the least developed countries cope with the global financial crisis.     "When coping with the financial crisis, the international community should pay particular attention to the damage of the crisis on developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), and do all it can to minimize the damage."     It is necessary to help developing countries maintain financial stability and economic growth, sustain and increase assistance to developing countries, and maintain economic and financial stability in developing countries, he said.     CHINA TO PLAY CONSTRUCTIVE ROLE     Responding to natural disasters and the global financial crisis, China has made timely adjustment to its policies and strengthened macroeconomic regulation, Hu said.     "Steady and relatively fast growth in China is in itself an important contribution to international financial stability and world economic growth," he noted.     "The Chinese government has adopted measures to boost economic development, including lowering the required reserve ratio, cutting the deposit and lending rates, and easing the corporate tax burdens," Hu told the participants.     Meanwhile, as a responsible member of the international community, "China has taken an active part in the international cooperation to deal with the financial crisis and played a positive role in maintaining international financial stability and promoting the development of the world economy," he said.     "Stability of the international financial markets and sustained development of the global economy are crucial to the well being of all countries and people," Hu noted.     "Let us tide over the difficulties through concerted efforts and contribute our share to maintaining international financial stability and promoting global economic growth," he concluded.

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Taxi driver Qu waited patiently in the December night chill as a gas station boy changed the price tag, which indicated China's unified fuel price cut effective early Friday morning.     The country slashed the benchmark prices for fuel from 6.37 yuan (0.93 U.S. dollar) per litre to 5.46 yuan starting Friday morning, which was earlier than the long-awaited government scheme on fuel taxation and pricing slated for Jan. 1 next year.     "The price cut of 0.91 yuan per litre means a monthly saving of900 yuan for a taxi driver," said Qu, waiting in Thursday's midnight dark for the clock to turn zero.     The government distributed the news of the price cut via all major media and short messages to cell phone users on Thursday evening.     Nevertheless, there was no queuing-up at the gas station in the early morning hour. The station boy said long queues appeared in previous price rises this year.     The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) made it clear Thursday that domestic fuel prices would remain unchanged on Jan. 1, 2009, when the fuel tax is expected to kick in.     This round of price cut was China's revamp of its oil pricing system to let it pegged with the global market.     "The pricing would reflect the global market supply of oil resources and let the market play a fundamental role," said Zhao Jiarong, an official with the NDRC.     "The latest cut would narrow the gap between wholesale and retail prices. Consumers would benefit from it," said Xu Kunlin, another NDRC official.     Zhou Dadi, an energy researcher, said his calculation showed the factory gate fuel price would drop by 2,000 yuan per tonne and the pre-tax retail price would be down by 1.7 yuan per liter after the price cut.     A fuel trader said there might be a hoard purchase before the fuel taxation effective on Jan. 1 next year.     Bai Chongen, an economist from Tsinghua University, said the post-tax retail price would remain unchanged next year as fuel producers would lower the factory gate price again to offset the tax.     But for fuel producers, the price cut reduced their sales profit. "It will have a short-term impact on our profit, but we expect the global prices to rise in future. This will secure the long-term profit," said Shu Zhaoxia, a researcher with Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner.     Experts said the country's first fuel price cut in almost two years would help revitalize companies and factories eking out in a slowed-down economy.     Among industry beneficiaries, the aviation sector would see an immediate effect because the benchmark prices for jet fuel was slashed by a bigger margin of more than 30 percent, or 2,400 yuan, to 5,050 yuan per tonne.     An Air China spokesman said the cut would definitely boost the aviation industry as the drop was beyond airliners' expectation.     A Guojin Securities analyst said based on the forecast 2009 jet fuel consumption of 11.47 million tonnes, the price cut would lead to a cost reduction of 27.5 billion yuan for the country's aviation industry.
