CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A new support group in the South Bay hopes to fill a gap, serving children whose loved ones have been diagnosed with cancer. The group was created by siblings Sophia and Vincent Epley, ages 13 and 11. Last year the two found themselves facing a heartbreaking reality when both parents were diagnosed with cancer. Sophia and Vincent wanted to create a safe place where kids can ask questions and meet others going through similar situations. The Children and Family Cancer Support Group is led by clinical social worker Cara Fairfax and is open to all families.Details: 613

(KGTV) -- While most students in San Diego County are distance learning, there are some schools that are doing a combination of virtual and in-person learning.One school in the South Bay is working with a hybrid system that makes sure all students get the same learning opportunities.St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista welcomed students back on campus a month ago. To keep class sizes small and following state guidelines, they split the older graders into separate classrooms.But not everyone returned to campus, as dozens of families chose to stay at home and do distance learning.So, the school put together a hybrid system that allows all students to participate in real time teaching no matter where they are.With the use of technology, the teacher can see the students at home and the students that are in both classrooms.Sixth-grade teacher Michael Hart said with the help of Zoom, a camera, and classroom speakers, he can engage all students in daily lessons.“I have a Logitech camera that tracks me so it will follow me around the classroom or if I’m behind my desk. It’s just a simple remote,” Hart said.He also uses an app that makes sure every student is called upon equally, so they can all participate in class discussions.Sixth-grader Zachary Lastrella told ABC 10News, “If Mr. Hart asks us a question either in here or in the Zoom or in the other room, then we can answer the question.”As for tests, all of the students complete those using their laptops via Google Forms.Hart added, “It’s able to randomize the questions, whether it’s multiple choice or fill in the blanks or an essay response, and it does come down to academic honesty.”Students say physically their “classrooms” may be different now, but the important elements are still there.Devraaj Jani, a sixth grade students, said, “We’re still in one class, and we’re still together as one.” 1908

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three Chula Vista teens are recovering after they were assaulted and robbed near Heritage Elementary School on Monday night. The teens are still on winter break. They tell 10News they were walking along Monarche Drive, on their way to get a slice of pizza, when four men pulled up next to them in a white car. The four men got out and assaulted them, getting away with their cell phones and wallets. One teen had to go to the emergency room to get a CAT scan and a x-ray to check for a wrist fracture. Chula Vista Police confirmed the incident to 10News. A lieutenant with the department says they were able to find the car and arrest the four suspects just hours later, two adult men and two male minors. When the suspects were located, officers found a total of 10 cell phones. Police are now working with other local agencies to find out if there are more victims. The two adults were taken to county jail. The minors were booked at juvenile hall. Anyone with information is asked to call Chula Vista Police. 1051

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista is launching a new pedestrian safety initiative after seeing a sharp increase in fatal crashes last year.According to the Chula Vista Police Department, nine pedestrians were killed in 2017 on city streets. That’s up 125% from 2016.In the first three months of 2018 there have already been three fatal pedestrian crashes, a 200% increase from the same period last year. Police say it's the first time in four years they’ve had more than one pedestrian killed within the first quarter of the year.The map below shows those killed in auto-pedestrian crashes between January of 2017 to March of 2018. In an effort to combat the trend and educate the public, the city unveiled a new campaign on Thursday called “Stay Safe Chula Vista.”To kick off the program they have named April as “Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month.” The Chula Vista Police Department along with the Fire Department and Department of Traffic Engineering will be working together on enforcement and education.CVPD will have increased patrols targeting both drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws. Along with the ticket, violators may also relieve pamphlets with information on the “Stay Safe Chula Vista” campaign. Of the nine fatal collisions in 2017, CVPD said pedestrians were found to be at fault in seven of them.The announcement came a little over a month after a 90-year-old man was killed while crossing the street.RELATED: 90-year-old dies hit, killed by two cars in Chula Vista Police say the man was crossing East H Street when he wasn’t supposed to when he was struck and killed.Similarly, in January of 2018, a 94-year-old man was hit and killed on the 1500 block of Third Avenue. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - This week Chula Vista Police shut down yet another illegal cannabis dispensary, an ongoing problem that's grown in recent years. While the city doesn't allow any cannabis sales at the moment, police believe there's roughly a dozen or more operating illegally in the city.“One of the challenges with unlicensed, illegal cannabis business is that they move and they change. The number of facilities is always changing, the location of facilities changes quite frequently," said Captain Phil Collum.Captain Collum says their most recent bust was one of the most egregious cases he's seen, from the number of cannabis products to security measures.“I was standing inside the facility and was shocked at what they had done," said Collum. "The windows were sealed shut with metal plating; the front door was actually, had a welded security grate that was locked closed, it had pretty much sealed off any emergency evacuation routes to this facility.”He says if there were a fire or sudden emergency in the building people could have been trapped. Captain Collum said they were alerted to the illegal operation by neighbor complaints. "It’s so important that community contact us and let us know where they believe an illegal cannabis for marijuana business might be located.”Chula Vista PD partnered with Chula Vista's Office of the City Attorney and the Code Enforcement Department to serve a civil abatement warrant for the illegal cannabis dispensary. “I’m not frustrated with the process, what’s frustrating quite honestly is people are taking advantage of our community.”Captain Collum urges the public to continue notifying authorities when they spot illegal businesses popping up in the city. 1731
