LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KGTV) - The beautiful wildflower super bloom in Southern California is being met with some ugly behavior. A sea of bright orange poppies carpets the hills along Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore. Word spread when the bloom erupted; now the area is a huge draw for visitors. "Came out here to see the beauty in nature, the poppies, they only come every few years, so you have to enjoy it,” said Lake Elsinore resident Jessica Rodriguez. She said she’s never seen so many people visit. To see the poppies, visitors must find a spot in a mile-long stretch of parked cars. Others opt to take photos from the freeway, which is illegal. "They want that perfect picture, they can get pretty ones but it’s at the expense of the habitat,” said Josh Reinig, MSHCP Reserve Manager.The parks department posted signs telling people not to step on flowers, and they created barriers to protect certain areas. "You're kind of seeing them a lot more trampled stepped on, people just sitting on them,” Reining said. Picking just one flower could mean 30 fewer flowers grow in the future. "Main thing; stay on trail, I understand people want to get the beautiful selfie in the flowers but if everyone did that, we wouldn't have these poppies." 1253

Lawmakers around the country are considering passing legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom.Those for and against have voiced their opinions. But now, three teachers in Michigan are putting the concept to the test.Three teachers — one who’s never shot a gun before and two concealed pistol license (CPL) holders — agreed to be put through an active shooter drill.“I’m a little nervous,” said Bob Fite. “I usually shoot at paper plates and at the gun range.”Fite has been a high school social studies teacher for 35 years. He is also a CPL holder.This active shooter training drill is what police use. Think of it as a big screen video game, except this scenario is all too real.Fite had his finger on the trigger the whole time, which is dangerous. But he still hesitated to shoot and when he did, he missed the mark.“There are lockers in the background. If that’s kids in the background, we got a problem,” he said.“It’s a very touchy subject, and I don’t know where I stand. I really don’t,” said Chad Keisel is a high school biology teacher of 24 years.He’s never shot a gun before. In the first training scenario, Chad was shot without even hitting the gunman.“I thought it was only one guy, how easy is that? But if there’s kids running around in the background, I would not shoot,” he said.Katherine Montie has only been a high school math teacher for a few months. She’s a CPL holder and during the practice round, it was clear she was a great shot.In the first scenario, she kept calm and killed the suspect.But in the second scenario, she didn’t realize there was more than one suspect that shot back at her. She was “killed” before she could hit one of the shooter.“If I knew those students, that would have been a completely different situation, for sure,” she said.Allen Park Police Sgt. Wayne Albright facilitated thie drill. He teaches students and school staff on the ALICE method, which doesn’t involve guns.ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Students and staff are trained to use a lockdown method while hiding under desks or furniture during a shooting or being proactive and doing whatever it takes to keep the shooter out of the room, or if unable to do so, using counter measure and evacuating.For more information on Alice, click hereSgt. Albright says teachers may not be able to handle emotional stress that comes with this type of training.“You learn to distance yourself and separate your feelings from the actual scene. I don’t think teachers have been trained to do that,” he explained. “They don’t have to. They have a connection with those kids because that’s what they’re supposed to do.”After the drill, the teachers expressed concern.“I was shaking. I can feel it in my knees. I can feel it in my elbows,” Keisel explained. “It kind of froze me for a second and that was somebody I didn’t even know. And it wasn’t even real.”If armed, the teachers say they’re not comfortable leaving their students in a classroom, while risking their own lives to hunt down a shooter.“I would like to say I would be the hero, but I don’t know if I would be,” Keisel added.“I would be locked down in my room making sure that nobody came through that door,” Fite said.Being smaller in stature, Montie says if she were armed in the classroom, her mind would constantly be on her gun.“What if one of my students tries to take that gun from me? Then you aren’t even thinking about an active shooter, you’re just thinking about every other day of the year,” she said.One thing all three teachers agree, the training has to be extensive. ut they question where the funding would come from.“I think it’s not as easy as hand teachers a gun, they are already there anyway they can just neutralize any threats because they all have guns and training,” Keisel said. “Come and try this and then answer the question, if it’s a wise thing?" Fite said.A bill has been introduced into the Michigan state House that would allow teachers to carry a gun at school. The teachers we spoke with say even if the bill passes, they hope lawmakers will focus on additional security measures, not just arming teachers. 4269

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former magazine model, her boyfriend and their former roommate are headed toward trial in the killing of a 71-year-old California psychiatrist whose body was found outside Las Vegas, a defense attorney said Friday.Kelsey Nichole Turner's lawyer, Brian Smith, said his client, Jon Logan Kennison, and Diana Nicole Pena are still due Monday before a Las Vegas judge on murder and conspiracy charges in the slaying of Thomas Kirk Burchard.However, Smith said their preliminary hearing will be called off after a grand jury handed up an indictment moving the case to Nevada state court for trial.Burchard lived in Salinas, California. Police say he had an intimate relationship with Turner and paid rent on a Las Vegas home where Turner, Kennison and Pena lived.Turner, Kennison and Pena are accused of killing Burchard and leaving his bludgeoned corpse in Turner's Mercedes Benz where it was found March 7 on a desert road between Las Vegas and Lake Mead.Turner, 26, modeled for Playboy Italia and Maxim magazines. She was arrested March 21 in Stockton, California.Kennison, 27, was arrested April 17 in Las Vegas.Pena, 30, was a Las Vegas Strip bartender. (KGTV) - Eleven months of waiting and one month of planning led to the moment that brought everyone in the Mount Vernon Preschool classroom to tears.Private First Class in the Army National Guard Brian Salazar served his first deployment in Qatar. He's a combat engineer based out of National City. His wife Krystal painstakingly planned a reunion in their 4-year-old daughter's classroom, to surprise her. Brian's parents, among other family were inside too.His mother, Maria Salazar, said in Spanish she thought of him every time she went to sleep, every time she ate and wondered if he ate or not, if he was suffering or not, these thoughts constantly ran through her mind."I did have those moments where I really missed him and I'd cry myself to sleep knowing that he wasn't there," Krystal said.Brian was focused on his little girl Annabel, "hopefully she's as excited to see me as I am her," he said minutes before walking through the door. His mom saw him first, letting out a joyful laugh and bursting to tears. It took Annabel a few seconds to realize what was happening, soon as she realized the man in the camouflage uniform was her dad, she ran and jumped over classmates to get to him. They collapsed into a group hug and sobbed with joy.The embrace lasting minutes as they held firmly to him, affirming to themselves he's truly home. The first words came from Annabel. He asked if she missed him and she squeaked out a quiet response echoing his words.The emotion bringing everyone in the classroom to applaud.Annabel showed her dad she made an art project of a soldier who mirrored him. (KGTV) - Three weeks after violence ripped through La Mesa, small businesses continue supporting one another, working toward recovery."It broke our heart when a lot of the glass was busted," Mike Miller said. He recently moved to La Mesa with his wife, Neng, charmed by the small town feel.The looting and destruction the night of May 30th after a rally against injustice sent a shockwave through the community.Leslie Thomas said she watched the horror from her balcony, just a couple blocks away. "We could see the flames and everything coming up, and we didn't sleep much that night but the next morning we got up and we said, 'you know what? We live here, what can we do to fix everything?'"That mantra reflected by hundreds who showed up that Sunday morning to help.As Leslie walked with her husband down the street they noticed "the liquor store on the corner down there, we walked by and we were like, 'Your windows aren't blown out!' and he was like, 'Everyone who knows me, who knows that I'm part of this neighborhood came out and protected my windows and I told them to go home and they wouldn't.' But he was out there giving water to everybody [Sunday] and he didn't question why he was doing it. People were giving out free coffee."A showing of sheer humanity.La Mesa neighbors aren't surprised to hear that generosity is still being extended weeks later.La Mesa Glass replaced the windows at Play It Again Sports June 11th and Bohemian House Saturday for free.The owners of Bohemian House said they were incredibly grateful for their gift, helping them get back to business.10News reached out to La Mesa Glass to ask how many businesses they have supported during this time and have not heard back yet.Neighbors said even the artwork painted over plywood boards standing guard in front of many La Mesa businesses were uplifting. Words and images of hope reminded them how strong and close their community is."I don't think this is going to change us in any way, I actually think it's going to make us a stronger neighborhood," Thomas said, defining La Mesa Strong.Some of the boards have come down but there are still more than a dozen businesses with plywood protecting their broken windows. 2229
