Just about anything with a wireless connection could be a target for hackers to attack, including personal computers, tablets and even baby monitors. But what about medical devices?The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is monitoring that, too.Cardiologist Cynthia Tracy, with George Washington University Medical Center, implants pacemakers into people’s bodies almost daily.“In a typical situation, there might be two electrodes that pass through these veins and into the heart,” Tracy explains of the device.The device, which is about the size of silver dollar, controls a patient's heart beat and sends data to doctors by using the internet."They have a Bluetooth connection somehow that allows the device to communicate with something external," Dr. Tracy says.That wireless connection is where the concern comes in.“There's no such thing as a medical device without vulnerabilities,” says Suzanne Scwarts, who leads medical device cyber security for the FDA.Shwarts says after a series of security problems discovered in various medical devices, cyber security is front and center.“We want patients to definitely be able to understand what are current risks today,” Shwarts says.Dr. Tracy explains while security shortcomings may be there, an actual hack to something like a pacemaker would be a bit difficult.“I couldn't from here reprogram someone that's out there in the lobby, Dr. Tracy says."They would have to be fairly close in order for me to do anything to their device."Though there have been no direct hacks to patients to date, the threat is there, which is why the FDA is ramping up its efforts to make sure the hacking of medical devices doesn't become reality. 1689

(KGTV) — A family-owned Mexican restaurant in La Jolla that was a local favorite for 52 years has officially closed its doors.On Monday, crews began clearing out Su Casa Mexican restaurant on La Jolla Blvd. The restaurant, known for its margaritas and fresh guacamole prepared at the table, opened in 1967."I feel like I'm losing a lot of my own history. It's really sad," said longtime customer Eric Lind.Lind estimated that he and his family ate at Su Casa roughly 200 times since the 1970s."It was just the food, the hospitality, and the ambiance. Everything about it, the whole package, it was just special," he said.On Facebook, dozens of customers posted farewells and memories. "My now-husband of nearly 25 years asked me to marry him after dinner at Su Casa on June 17, 1994. You're part of our story," one woman wrote.A note posted on the door of the Spanish-style building said after more than half a century, the owner and the restaurant "are ready to retire." The owner told the La Jolla Light he was seeking a buyer for the property. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A boater who had been missing since Friday was rescued about 86 miles off the coast of Florida on Sunday.The U.S. Coast Guard says 62-year-old Stuart Bee was found alive on the bow of his 32-foot Sea Ray, which had capsized.Bee departed Cape Marina in Port Canaveral on Friday and didn’t return, according to the Coast Guard.Watchstanders in Jacksonville learned of the disappearance Saturday morning and were told Bee wouldn’t typically stay out on his boat overnight.An aircrew was dispatched the area and other boaters were advised to be on the lookout for Bee’s vessel.Luckily, the Coast Guard says Bee was spotted clinging to his boat at about 11 a.m. Sunday and was then transported to shore."Saving lives at sea is our highest calling. Kyle Brown is crediting his pitbull Petey with saving his and his family’s lives after a gunman barricaded himself inside him Romulus home on Friday.Michigan State Police said that the incident began as a botched carjacking a couple of blocks from Brown’s home.The suspect took off through the neighborhood, jumping Brown’s fence. “As soon as I made eye to eye contact with him, I could tell by the look in his eyes and by his intent, he knew what he was doing, and it was an opportunity,” Brown said.Petey charged after the suspect. “When the pit bull came out and encountered him he immediately pulled his gun out and shot him,” Brown said. Even with a bullet wound, Petey was still able to chase the suspect out of the yard.Police say they exchanged gunfire with the suspect as he jumped the fence, hitting the suspect twice. The suspect then jumped back into Brown’s yard and went inside his home.Brown’s son and his friend were inside, and Brown tried to get them all out safely. “When he got to the door he pulled for his gun, and I’m communicating with Tommy, ‘Cmon Cmon Tommy. Hurry up.’ Unfortunately, Tommy just froze up,”  Brown said.The suspect barricaded himself inside the home with Brown’s son’s 7-year-old friend, Tommy.Tommy was released unharmed hours later.The suspect gave himself up to MSP. Tommy, Brown and his son are physically OK.Petey had to be put down because his injuries were so severe. “Petey didn’t make it, but you can’t be upset with him. He not only saved my life but he saved our lives,” Brown said. MSP has not released the suspect's name or the charges he is facing. 1657
