A lot of time, energy and love into this piece," said Heather Johnson.At 30th and Juniper Street and 30th Street, the community mural sponsored by several neighborhood businesses was targeted by a vandal over the weekend."I think it's disgusting to be honest with you," said Brian Padgett.The phrase "#Neighborhood" was spray-painted over, replaced with the phrase "ETHNIC CLEANSING." At the bottom of the mural, the phrase "#Hipster Pacifism" was tagged in purple."Disheartening, frustrating and an act of cowardice," added Ezekiel Morphis.Neighbors believe the spray-painted messages are sounding off against the gentrification of South Park. The tagged wall is a part of a building which will soon be home to a non-profit restaurant benefiting local schools. It was once home to long-time coffeehouse priced out of the area almost two years ago."It happens in every neighborhood. As a city grows, there is change. This is not the way to handle it," said Johnson.Some paint was quickly put on the tagging, but the creators of the mural — which cost about ,000 — say it may cost another ,000 to repair. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One young man was named the newest recruit of the San Diego Police Department Wednesday.SDPD's newest officer, five-year-old Liam, was sworn in by Chief David Nisleit as part of a ceremony hosted by the department and Make-A-Wish San Diego.Liam, who was born with a congenital heart defect, began his first day on the beat soon after his ceremony. He and his partner received a call to help capture a bank robber. Bank of America also partnered with Make-A-Wish to offer up a location for a bank robbery and arrest scene, where the two cops took in the suspect.Liam and his partner then returned to police headquarters to interview the suspect.The Make-A-Wish event was held just one day before the department celebrates its 130th anniversary. 770

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person is dead following a shooting at a Midway-area sex shop, according to police.The shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. on the 3600 block of Midway Drive.The identity of the victim and the details surrounding the shooting weren’t immediately clear. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday the North San Diego Business Chamber honored first responders who've gone above and beyond in their duties protecting the community. One of the recipients was San Diego Police Department K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese, honored for his actions during the active shooter incident at the Chabad of Poway synagogue.Wiese was on his way to meet his family for lunch when he heard the shots fired call and immediately responded to the area.Despite having little information and no back-up, Officer Wiese was able to track the suspect down who then surrendered. "Active shooter is right up there with 'officer down'; the calls don't get more intense than that, when you know someone is actively shooting there's going to be multiple victims, there's going to be a large scene, it's going to be chaotic," said Wiese. Officer Wiese says his 20 years of training kicked in."I tried not to think about the danger, just tried to figure out what I needed to do," said Wiese. "Every single day we have great stories like this, and so I want the public to know this is not unusual, this is our normal," said Chief Craig Carter with the Escondido Police Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man was arrested and another man was injured after a violent argument at a Gaslamp convenience store.San Diego Police say a customer at the 7-11 store at 515 5th Ave. was causing a disturbance at about 9 a.m. Saturday. Another customer confronted the man inside the store and the confrontation escalated into a fight.At one point, the 31-year-old suspect stabbed the 52-year-old victim in the left side of his abdomen, police said.The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police arrested the suspect, though their identities were not released. 614
