SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The fate of a beloved torrey pine - saved from the chopping block more than seven years ago - is once again in question.Along tree-lined Long Branch Avenue, one tree has captured the hearts of Jeff Ray's family."My kids loved it.  They touch it all the time.  It's wonderful," said Ray.The towering torrey pine is believed to be about 90 years old."It signifies the beauty of nature and the history of the area," said Ray.The history includes safety concerns. In 2010, with the sidewalks buckling, city experts deemed it a safety hazard, concerned the leaning tree would fall over. Upset neighbors hired their own arborist. Eventually, the city relented, deeming the tree stabile and repairing the sidewalks.  Since then, the tree has been granted Heritage status, giving it extra protections. Still, safety concerns remain.  On Wednesday afternoon, a city advisory panel met and the city's forester told the group the tree isn't just learning. It's actually on the move."The tree has moved an inch-and-a-half in the last two-and-a-half years. The city is recommending removal of the tree based on safety," said City Forester Brian Widener. 1192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The debate over whether controversial guest speakers should be invited to a summit on reparations at San Diego State University re-erupted Wednesday after several protesters at a rally in favor of the invitations used anti-Semitic tropes that some witnesses called hate speech."We're all open to objective research on any given topic," Professor Risa Levitt told 10News. "But when hate speech enters the dialogue at a university that touts itself as being a leader in openness, acceptance, and diversity, then I think you do run into a problem."In 2019, the university agreed to fund a summit organized by students to explore the issues of reparations and slavery. One name floated as a potential speaker was Ava Muhammad, a spokesperson for the Nation of Islam who has been accused of anti-Semitism. When her name was suggested, a video was circulated showing her refer to Jews as "parasites" who taught Americans how to oppress freed slaves after the Civil War. When professors spoke out to suggest her invitation would be a mistake, the university said Muhammad would no longer be considered, explaining that the students in charge of the summit had decided she would not be invited.Wednesday's protest was held by the African People's Socialist Party and did not, according to organizers, include SDSU students as speakers, although one professor did speak. They made the case that no summit about reparations would be complete without another controversial leader accused of anti-Semitic remarks, Omali Yeshitela, chairman of the African People's Socialist Party. Yeshitela has previously been a guest speaker at SDSU.However, witnesses to the protest were disturbed by some of the language used, especially suggestions that rich Jewish people secretely run the university. One protestor called on students to boycott the summit to "...send a message to SDSU and their Zionist masters that we stand with Minister Ava and Chairman Omali.""A synagogue was shot 45 minutes from where we are right now," said SDSU student Dylan Meisner, referring to the deadly 2019 shooting at Chabad of Poway. "The argument is we cannot have people coming on campus who are going to say things that directly incite violence against Jewish people."Meisner says most students support free speech and believe that student groups are free to hear from whomever they want. However, he says this is different because the summit is funded by SDSU. "I personally was concerned, and I know many other students on campus were concerned, about the use of our tuition dollars being used to pay for a speech of people who have incited hatred against Jewish people in the past," Meisner said.A spokesperson for San Diego State says any characterization that the university banned, disallowed, or uninvited any speaker on the topic of reparations and slavery is incorrect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The commissioner of the Pac-12 says 15-minute testing technology from a San Diego company could be the “game-changer” needed to restart competition in the conference before the end of the year.The Pac-12 is considering restarting college football as early as mid- to late-November, according to ESPN, as long as it can secure approvals from state and county lawmakers in California and Oregon.In some conferences, college football is entering its third week, but Pac-12 schools like USC and UCLA are still in workout mode after the conference voted last month to postpone all sports until 2021 at the earliest.League officials are now revisiting that decision and considering an earlier timeline after signing an agreement with San Diego-based Quidel Corporation to provide rapid antigen testing for all athletes, including daily tests for high-contact sports like football.“The access to rapid result testing that we can implement on even a daily basis with some sports with high contact will be a real game changer for us,” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said after touring Quidel’s facility this month.Most nasal swab tests are genetic tests, or PCR tests, which seek out the genetic code buried inside the virus’ protein shell. These tests are considered the industry standard, but they require processing in a lab to convert RNA into enough readable strands of DNA. Results can sometimes take days.Quidel’s nasal swab test is what’s called an antigen test, which looks for parts of the virus’ protein shell. It can be read by machines at each university in about 15 minutes.“No one's going to be spreading the virus because no one will be engaging in practice or competition with the virus,” Scott said.That’s the hope at least, but the partnership with the Pac-12 will be an important test for Quidel’s diagnostic product.Quidel was the first company to get a rapid antigen test on the market, securing an emergency use authorization in May. But there were questions about the accuracy of the test compared to PCR tests in the small sample size provided by the company.In July, Quidel published more data showing its antigen tests matched up with PCR tests 96.7% of the time when a positive was detected. But those results were only among individuals who were actually showing symptoms.“The question that people have is in the asymptomatic population, will the data look similar?” said Quidel CEO Doug Bryant in an interview.Bryant said the company has unpublished data that will be forwarded to the FDA showing “very similar” relative accuracy to PCR tests in asymptomatic individuals, but he said the goal of the partnership with the Pac-12 is to investigate the tests even further.“We want to know that the tests we’re doing are appropriate for use in the asymptomatic population. And we need to demonstrate that, to not only the scientific community but to the public at large,” Bryant said.The testing program with the Pac-12 will essentially be a large clinical trial to find out if rapid testing of athletes can prevent spread, backed by the muscle at some of the premiere research universities.The Pac-12 is hoping the testing program will convince lawmakers to ease restrictions on college athletics, particularly in California.Although the NFL played a game at the new SoFI Stadium in Inglewood last weekend, nearby USC cannot gather in groups of more than 12 players.There are now four antigen tests on the market. Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, was charged in the murder; but this month, a judge lowered his bond from million to 0,000. They also say that in original court paperwork, police detectives made comments that didn't add up. If Clark does bail out, he'll have to wear an ankle monitor. She's frustrated Clark could potential go home and be somewhat comfortable, while her daughter will never get that chance again.
