"Both can result in severe illness and complications, including hospitalization and death. While there is not a readily available vaccine for coronavirus, we do know that being vaccinated for influenza is the best thing you can do to protect yourself from getting the flu."Last year, 105 people died from the flu in San Diego County, while the virus killed as many as 62,000 nationwide. The 2017-18 season was even worse, with 343 deaths in San Diego County and 79,000 nationwide."While some experts may disagree about the optimum timing to receive the flu shot, most, including those at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommend getting the shot by the end of October," Geary said. "As for this year, with the coronavirus pandemic still in full swing, it's not too early to get the flu shot right now."While flu vaccine supplies have sometimes run thin in the past, that shouldn't be the case this year, Geary said. Pharmaceutical companies have produced up to 198 million doses of the vaccine for the U.S. market, a record-setting amount that tops last year's supply by 20 million.The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months or older, especially those who are at high risk for complications from the flu -- including people 65 years and older, children under the age of 2, pregnant women and people with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, neurological conditions, blood disorders, weakened immune systems and morbid obesity.This year's vaccine is designed to cover the four strains expected to be the most common in circulation during the 2020-21 influenza season: Influenza A (H1N1), influenza A (H3N2), influenza B (Victoria) and influenza B (Yamagata). 2743

Emergency room visits by people with flu-like symptoms dropped from 3 percent to 2 percent over the same span, however.Overall, there have been 334 influenza-related deaths in San Diego County this season, compared to 82 during the same period last flu season.Victims have ranged in age from 1 to 101, and most had underlying medical conditions."Unfortunately, influenza-related deaths are still being reported, a sign that the flu continues to take a toll on the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer . "While influenza activitypersists, people should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick, especially getting vaccinated."The high number of deaths this season is related to unusually severe strains of the virus but also improved tracking by local medical communities, according to the county. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than a dozen animal shelters, rescues and sanctuaries across San Diego County Saturday will encourage people to adopt a pet during the fifth annual Clear the Shelters day.Clear the Shelters is a nationwide animal adoption event intended to help as many shelter animals as possible find a forever home. Since the event began in 2015, more than 300,000 pets have been adopted during Clear the Shelters events.The San Diego Humane Society's San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside campuses and the county of San Diego's Department of Animal Services shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad will participate in the event and waive adoption fees for all animals adopted throughout the day.At the county's shelters and the humane society, animals available for adoption have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on their vaccinations, if necessary. Prospective adopters can save time by searching the available pets at a shelter's website."People still need to go through the normal adoption process of filling out an application and doing a screening interview with staff. We just want to make sure their new owners are prepared and committed to an animal," County Animal Services Director Daniel DeSousa said.According to the county, 81 animals were adopted during last year's Clear the Shelters event, while more than 400 animals were adopted at the humane society's three locations last year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A proposal to add a fenced-in, off-leash dog park and walking trails at Fiesta Island in Mission Bay Park was vetted Thursday by the San Diego City Council's Environment Committee, which unanimously voted to send to the full council.The committee considered two options for an amendment to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan, which guides future development of the area. Either option would update Fiesta Island, a partially undeveloped area of the park, by adding new amenities and park area to the island's southwest section.The committee ultimately chose the plan dubbed "option B," which reserves much of the island's southwest area for a fenced-in, off-leash dog park and also includes parking areas and walking trails.Option A would have allocated much of the southwest area for a fenced- in, off-leash dog park but would have also included a non-motorized boat launching area along the water, a road extension, larger parking facilities and a designated swimming beach for residents.The Fiesta Island amendment to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan has been in development for roughly two years. Committee attendees, including members of the Fiesta Island Dog Owners group, overwhelmingly stated their support for option B.City Councilman Scott Sherman said his office received roughly 30 calls and more than 300 emails in support of option B, due in part of members of FIDO posting his office's contact information. City Councilwoman Vivian Moreno also expressed appreciation for the public support for option B, particularly among dog owners."I am confident that city staff will be able to find a permanent location for non-motorized personal watercraft in other locations in Mission Bay Park," Moreno said. "But I don't think we need to destroy the experience of thousands and thousands and thousands of dog owners who use Fiesta Island right now in order to do so."Option B also received support from former City Council members Donna Frye, Sherri Lightner and Lorie Zapf."It's important to preserve as much open space as possible," City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said of option B. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Masked intruders threatened a couple with guns and slashed the male victim with a knife today during a daybreak residential robbery in a Corridor-area neighborhood.The 27-year-old man and 20-year-old woman awoke at their residence in the 3200 block of Bramson Place about 6:30 a.m. to find the thieves next to their bed, pointing guns at them and demanding valuables, according to San Diego police. One of the intruders held a knife to the man's throat, Officer Robert Heims said.During the robbery, the male victim suffered several cuts, Heims said.Details on the severity of the wounds were not released.The thieves stole an unknown amount and type of items from the couple before fleeing, according to police. 738
