SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) – It’s one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the country. It's called Cipro and the side effects could lead to your death. Experts are now calling for tighter controls on these prescriptions to protect the public.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to former Cipro users in San Diego who say they hit rock bottom after taking the medication.“I felt like I was in the pit of hell,” says Annie Spackman from Chula Vista. She describes it as the darkest time of her life. “I didn't know how much more I could handle,” she adds. After taking the antibiotic Cipro, she tells us, “My knees, my ankles [and] my feet [were in] pain. Just shooting pain.”“[I had] burning sensations in my muscles, my joints, my tendons [and] my ligaments,” says Tom Ingoglia, who lives in Pacific Beach. He says his health also spiraled after taking Cipro. “I had pain throughout my body,” he adds.Spackman says she suffered from panic attacks, brain fog and depression. “You feel lonely [and] helpless,” she tells us.She says with faith, she pulled through. Yet, Florence Summers says her daughter, Deana, did not. “She parked her car on the side of the interstate and walked in front of a semi,” she cries.Her family blames Deana's suicide on side effects from Cipro, which she began taking just four months before her death. "It was not her. She would have never, ever, ever done something like that," adds Summers.Cipro is one of the brand names for a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Another brand name is Levaquin.Since 2015, the FDA has recognized a syndrome related to taking these drugs. It's called fluoroquinolone-associated disability. The FDA added black box warnings to these drugs, citing disabling and potentially irreversible side effects, including suicidal thoughts. However, some experts say that no one is reading that warning, buried in a medication insert.“We have suicides after 1 or 2 days of antibiotics,” says Dr. Charles Bennett. He’s a nationally recognized medication safety expert and says it's a big problem. “The risks outweigh the benefits,” he adds.A review of the FDA’s data shows more than 20,000 reports of psychiatric side effects, like anxiety and depression and 174 suicides connected to these antibiotics since 1998. Doctors in the U.S. wrote 29.7 million prescriptions for these drugs in 2016 alone, according to the CDC.Dr. Bennett has filed a petition with the FDA, asking that doctors who prescribe this medicine get patients to sign a release that they understand the risks before taking the drugs.The FDA told us it is reviewing Dr. Bennett's request for a new warning, adding, "It is important that health care providers and patients are aware of both the risks and benefits of fluoroquinolones."We reached out to Bayer which makes Cipro. The drug maker sent the following statement.“The health and safety of patients who use Bayer products is our top priority, and Bayer expresses its sympathies to the family of [Deana].Cipro? (ciprofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, an important class of medications that treat a wide range of bacterial infections, many of which are serious and can be life-threatening. All medicines have potential side effects and the risks are communicated to physicians and patients in FDA-approved product labeling. The Cipro label contains FDA-approved language advising physicians and their patients about the potential side effects associated with the use of this therapy, including specific warnings about the risks of central nervous system and other psychiatric effects.The safety and efficacy of Bayer’s fluoroquinolones have been demonstrated in clinical trials involving more than 90,000 patients and extensive clinical experience in more than 800 million patients. Cipro was originally approved by the FDA in 1987 and is now widely available as a generic medication that is manufactured and supplied widely throughout the United States by several companies.Bayer closely monitors the safety and efficacy of its fluoroquinolones on an ongoing basis, as we do with all of our products. As with any prescription medication, Bayer encourages patients to discuss the risks and benefits of these medications with their healthcare provider.”The drug maker Janssen is no longer making Levaquin, but the drug is still available in generic form.Spackman adds, “Something more has to be done to let people know the extreme side effects it can have on you.” 4489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- There's a new requirement that large California counties have to meet before they can advance on the state's color-coded COVID-19 reopening system.State health officials say the "health equity metric" will help reduce infection rates among vulnerable populations.Sunday, San Diego County health officials opened another drive up testing site in Chula Vista. Local leaders say they've been targeting disadvantaged communities with education, outreach, and testing since the start of the pandemic."About 34% of our county population is Latino, but about 66% of the cases, we saw that early on, and that's why we took the action of developing the South Bay Saturation Strategy for testing. We have sites in every community in the South Bay," said Nick Macchione, director of the Health and Human Services Agency for San Diego County.Counties with more than 106,000 residents will be divided into quartiles based on income, education, and other factors gathered in census tracts.The goal is to bring the infection rates in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in line with the county's overall rate."Now they need to make sure that not only does their test positivity for the whole county, their adjusted case rate, but also their test positivity in the lowest quartile in the Healthy Places Index for the county all need to meet the criteria for the least restrictive tier," said Dr. Mark Ghaly, California's health secretary.Ghaly said counties will need to show that they're directing money and resources to help the communities hardest hit."It's not just the test positivity, that's the piece that helps counties move forward or slows them down in moving through the tier system, but we are working with counties on a broader strategy to focus on equity," said Ghaly.Ghaly said failing to meet the metric cannot push a county back into a more restrictive tier, but can slow it down from moving ahead.Nancy Maldonado is the President and CEO of the Chicano Federation. She welcomes the additional metric."I do think it's a good thing because I think it places emphasis on the importance of taking care of our community and taking care of our essential workers who are disproportionately communities of color," said Maldonado.Some fear it's yet another hurdle to reopening.County Supervisor Jim Desmond took to Twitter, saying if the governor wants to help disadvantaged communities, he should let them get back to work."I think it's really ironic the governor keeps those businesses and lower income folks out of jobs, and now he wants a metric to make sure we're taking care of them," said Desmond.San Diego county remains in the red tier, which is one tier away from the most restrictive purple tier. 2727

Not for the same reason as most visitors though - he was there to surprise his wife. Beckie Turner is a trainer. Hundreds of people pack in to see the "Dolphin Days" show at the park. Beckie does it every day, but Wednesday, September 13 there was something different going on backstage. "She's not expecting me, she thinks I'm on medical hold or something like that," her husband told 10News Reporter Bree Steffen.  "I hope she's not mad haha." Lt. Turner is back early from his 11-month deployment in the Middle East. The couple was reunited after he walked down the arena stairs, people cheering as Beckie got out of the water and embraced her husband. "It's nice to have him home," she said, tearing up. SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - In an effort to calm people's fears about new streetlights equipped with cameras and sensors, the City of San Diego will hold a public forum Wednesday night to answer questions and explain what the new technology does, and does not do.The meeting is from 5:30 to 7 pm, at the Malcom X Library on 5148 Market Street.Over the last two years, the city has installed more than 3,000 new streetlights that have "Smart City" technology built into them. The lights have cameras, microphones and sensors to track activity around them throughout the day.RELATED: "Smart" Streetlights coming to San Diego"Pedestrians walking by, cars parking and then leaving, cars traveling by, which direction, how fast," explains Cody Hooven, the City of San Diego's Chief Sustainability Officer.It will also track weather information in real time.That information is turned into meta-data and uploaded to the cloud. According to the city, it can be used for research or to build apps to make life easier. The goal is to turn San Diego into a "Smart City."Examples the city uses describe apps that can tell people when a parking spot opens up, or one that will gauge how many people pass by a certain spot every day.But critics worry about the privacy concerns of having thousands of government-controlled cameras around town.RELATED: Thousands of Streetlights to get "Smart" tech by the end of AugustHooven says the cameras are only used to gather the information. The footage from the cameras isn't accessible to the public, and the cameras are not for surveillance. Also, the footage will only be stored on the camera for 5 days and then deleted.Police may only ask for footage after a crime is committed, and only as part of an investigation. According to the city, the footage has already been used to help SDPD solve a handful of crimes.Hooven also says the cameras will use GPS technology to ensure they only get footage of public spaces, and not areas that are expected to be private. The system uses a process called "curtilage" to blur any areas that shouldn't be shown.Hooven says the city is ready to answer any other questions people have about the new lights at Wednesday's meeting."Technology is coming and we're trying to embrace it to provide a lot of benefits to the city and save us money," she says. Many dads were happy to take their loved ones out for a hearty meal, now that COVID-19 restrictions have become a little looser.All around town, there were lines out the door for Father's Day brunch. This was a welcome sight for San Diego restaurant owners."We missed mother's day, and we missed spring break," Johnny Rivera, co-owner of Hash House A Go Go in Hillcrest said. "These are the acorns in our business that we like to gather. And now that it's Father's Day, we feel like kind of back to normal today."During last month's Mother's Day, restaurants were only allowed to offer curbside pick up and delivery due to County Health Department rules. But now that dining restrictions have eased up, the 'Papa Bears' were ready for their big outing."They seem like they're coming out of hibernation a little bit," Rivera laughed.Some were still a bit hesitant to dine out."We were a little skeptical about it, but we still enjoy going out here and there," father, Alan Valdez said. He and his family were dining at Breakfast Republic in Downtown San Diego.Others were publicly ready to celebrate fatherhood with their loved ones."We were all waiting by our cars," a diner at Hash House A Go Go said. "We got a phone call, and everybody kept their distance while we were waiting." Three generations of his family were dining out, after getting a last-minute table at the restaurant. Of course, menu items were all dad-sized and dad-approved."Pork ribs and eggs, chicken wings and eggs, fried chicken, waffle, all things dad needs," Rivera shared."You can take a shower in this bowl, man!" the diner at Hash House said.The best part of the day?"Just hang out, take a day off work," Valdez said."I got my family.
