A Japanese pilot found to be more than nine times over the legal alcohol limit before a scheduled flight from London Heathrow in October has been sentenced to 10 months in prison, police said Thursday.Katsutoshi Jitsukawa, 42, an employee of flag carrier Japan Airlines, was scheduled to fly from Heathrow to Tokyo on October 28 at 6:50 p.m. local time, but failed a breath test shortly before takeoff.The test showed Jitsukawa had 189 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his body. The legal limit for pilots is 20 mg, while drivers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are allowed as much as 80 mg.Alarm was raised after a driver of a crew bus smelled alcohol and called the police, who conducted the test, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.Jitsukawa said he had drunk two bottles of wine and a pitcher of beer the night before the flight, NHK reported.He was remanded in custody and later pleaded guilty to the charge of performing an aviation function when his ability was impaired through alcohol. Jitsukawa had been scheduled to fly a 244-seater Boeing 777 aircraft.Reacting to the sentencing, Inspector of Aviation Policing Iain Goble, condemned the "serious" offense that could have had "catastrophic" consequences."This conviction reflects he displayed not only total disregard for the safety of all the passengers and staff on his flight, but also the wider public," Goble said.Following Jitsukawa's arrest, Japan Airlines apologized for the incident and said "safety remains our utmost priority," adding it will "implement immediate actions to prevent any future occurrence." 1610

A man stood on a freeway overpass near Detroit early Thursday, threatening to jump. So thirteen tractor-trailers lined up underneath, ready to break his fall.Troopers closed off both directions of Interstate 696 and asked for the truckers' help, hoping to protect the man in case he fell or jumped, said Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police.Asking truckers to help in such cases is not unusual, Shaw said, but "most of the time these events are (resolved) pretty fast, so we only get one semi."This time it took about three hours to get the man, whom police declined to identify, down from the bridge, he said.It was 911 calls that alerted police to the man around 1 a.m. Tuesday on the overpass in Huntington Woods, just outside Detroit, Shaw said."Once we figured out that this is a situation where someone might be contemplating taking their whole life ... we shut traffic down (and) we diverted it off onto the side streets," Shaw said.Troopers looked for big rigs exiting the highway and asked them to drive ahead instead and park beneath the overpass. The 13 trucks packed in tightly to minimize the gaps between them.Should the man have fallen, Shaw said, it would have been only five or six feet onto the roof of a truck, rather than 14 feet to the cement below.Police ended up talking the man down, he said."Usually when we talk to people that are involved in these type of incidents," Shaw said, "usually there's a trigger. A California farm that was tied to an outbreak of E.coli on romaine lettuce is now recalling cauliflower and other lettuce grown at the farm.Adam Bros. Farming Inc. sent out a news release Thursday saying red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce and cauliflower harvested November 27-30 has been recalled because it may also be contaminated with E.coli.The farm initiated the voluntary recall with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday. The cauliflower was distributed in 10 states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It was also distributed in Tijuana, Mexico and Canada. The additional lettuce recalled was sent to states mostly on the western side of the country. Red and green leaf lettuce was distributed in California, Colorado, Oregon, Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington and Canada.
