SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Armed private security guards - and others with nonlethal ways to defend themselves - could soon patrol iconic San Diego locations like Balboa Park and the downtown Central Library.The city of San Diego is officially seeking proposals from security firms that would authorize armed or enhanced safety personnel outside more than 50 places, including community parks, skate parks, and library branches. The guards could either carry guns or non-lethal weapons, such as mace or hand restraints, depending on the arrangement. The city currently has very few armed guards - mostly stationed around public bathrooms downtown. RELATED: City may seek armed guards at Central Library, other parksA firm called Able Patrol and Guard patrols city parks and libraries, However, those guards are unarmed and essentially observe and report. The change comes after guards reported being threatened, spit on, and harassed, namely by a growing homeless population outside the Central Library. The city is now aiming to increase their ability to defend themselves. The details emerged under a new city request for proposals obtained by 10News. They can also qualify with substitutes such as two years of military experience or two years as a police officer. "The City is releasing a comprehensive RFP that allows the City to potentially utilize a variety of security services should the need arise," city spokesman Tim Graham said in a statement. "The goal of the RFP is to provide the proper level of security for City facilities as determined by City departments."Graham said a San Diego Police expert reviewed the document for technical soundness. He said the police chief would always be notified in the event of armed security dispatched. The city is seeking responses by Sept. 7. Mayor Kevin Faulconer was not available for an interview. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say they are taking aggressive measures to contain a flu outbreak at San Diego's migrant shelter. At least 16 migrants have shown flu-like symptoms; all were recently flown to San Diego from Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three migrants tested positive with a rapid influenza test."In order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease we've become more aggressive in treating everyone with symptoms, regardless of when those symptoms started," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County.RELATED: Flu outbreak sickens over 30 migrants at border centerBefore being admitted to the shelter, migrants undergo medical screenings.Migrants with flu-like symptoms are being isolated off-site in hotel rooms, along with their family members who are receiving preventative medicine.On Thursday, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher expressed their continued frustration with the federal government's handling of the migrant crisis.
