SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For families who want to give their kids some Halloween fun but avoid traditional trick-or-treating, the city is offering a quick and safe alternative.Wednesday through Saturday, the City of San Diego will offer free bags of candy for families to drive through or walk up and select as an alternative to going door-to-door this Halloween amid the pandemic.The sites will be set up at various times across 27 recreation centers in the city. A complete list of participating recreation centers is online.Families and kids are encouraged to dress up in their costumes. Visitors will get a free bag of candy as well as "a scary surprise or two," according to the city.All recreation centers will be following the recommended guidelines under the county's public health orders, so social distancing and face coverings will be required. 857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Drivers in Torrey Highlands saw quite the sight as a hot air balloon landed in front of Westview High School Friday evening.A video circulating online shows traffic continuing to move around the balloon as it made a safe landing on Camino Del Sur.Lawrence and Andrea Sher said they are used to hot air balloons landing near their home on Bryn Glen Way, but said, this time, the hot air balloon was a bit too close for comfort. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time in 40 days, San Diego County has fallen below the state's County Monitoring List threshold for coronavirus case rate.San Diego County was placed on the list on July 3 after it crossed the state metric of 100 cases per 100,000 people over 14 days. Wednesday, the county reported a case rate of 94.1.The county will have to remain off the watch list for another three days to get off California's watch list and an additional 14 days in order for local schools grades 7th through 12th can return to in-person instruction.No other businesses are slated to be allowed to reopen after that 17-day window unless the state provides more guidance for business reopenings, according to the county.San Diego County reported 236 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, a 3% positive rate out of 7,339 reported tests. Six new deaths were also reported, including five women and one man who died between July 28 and Aug. 11. All of the victims had underlying conditions, county officials said.The county also reported two new community outbreaks, one in a grocery setting and one in a manufacturing setting.While the county's case rate has fallen, it continues to be high above its community outbreak threshold of seven in seven days. Currently, the county has 26 community outbreaks in a week. A community outbreak is three or more coronavirus cases in the same setting in people of different households in the past two weeks.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said of the drop in the county's case rate: "San Diegans should be proud of the progress we have made, but we have to recognize the goal is not just to get our cases down, it is to keep them down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Emily Lake opened Sisters Pizza in Hillcrest last summer to honor her sister Kate, who passed away at an age too young.Her restaurant features a wall of framed pictures of sisters and people who are like sisters - many who have become regulars at the neighborhood eatery. "People have contributed pictures of them and their sisters, them and their friends, and it's not just women. It's anybody who has a close relationship," Lake says. Lake says business had been going even better than expected, until the coronavirus outbreak. Now, her restaurant and those across the county have been reduced to takeout and delivery. "Being any sort of small business owner, and such a brand new one too, we're just navigating scary waters and doing the best we can," says Lake, who owns the restaurant with her husband Trevor. Lake estimates that 60 to 70 percent of their revenue is gone forever. That's because standard insurance policies do not cover loss of business for viruses and bacteria. "I thought that it would be a force majeure or considered an Act of God, and unfortunately it is not," Lake says. "Even in our catastrophe insurance, which would cover earthquake or other natural disasters, this pandemic is not included."But those in the insurance industry say it's an uncertain situation. That's because businesses aren't contracting or closing because they themselves have become infected. Instead, they are doing so because the government is telling them to. One San Diego insurance broker told 10News businesses should make a claim regardless. If it's denied, so be it. Lake said she'd look into that option."At this point we'll pull out all the stops in order to stay in business," Lake said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For over a decade, SDSU associate professor of chemistry Gregory Holland has been researching spiders and particularly black widow’s silk.They’ve come to the realization, through their research, that the properties of black widow silk are stronger than steel and tougher than the Kevlar in bulletproof vests.Gregory Holland, SDSU associate professor of analytical chemistry and Northwestern chemistry professor Nathan Gianneschi said their collaboration shows the organization of the molecules involved in silk production is more complex than previously thought.There are companies that use synthetic spider silk but its the specific black widow spider silk that has the top tier benefits.“The synthetic spider silk its not a bad material, its just not as good as the real thing," Holland said.Holland says the company that creates synthetic silk actually has partnerships with Adidas and Patagonia. "The most important thing is a spider does it low energy, environmentally friendly. It’s just protein water and salt”.Once they reach the point where they’re able to identically replicate the silk of a black widow spider, the artificial version could be used in building materials for bridges or environmentally friendly replacements for plastic.Black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) spin a lightweight thread much stronger than that of other spider species, with draglines that can stretch an extra 25 percent of their length before snapping.The composition of the spun silk fibers was previously identified, but the structure of the proteins involved in producing them has been more of a mystery, now one step closer. 1650
