SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego health officials are working with UCSD to notify people who may have been exposed to tuberculosis at the school’s La Jolla campus.According to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, the period of potential exposure was between January 25 through May 15. Those who are known to have been exposed were notified.“Testing is recommended for all those exposed to assure they are not infected, since they may not have symptoms,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. "For anyone infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent disease.”Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact. Most people who are exposed do not become infected.Symptoms of TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexpected weight loss.No-cost testing will be provided those identified starting May 30 at the campus Student Health Center on Library Walk.The number of annual cases of TB has decreased since the early 90s and has stabilized in recent years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers who fired shots at a man in Rolando last year were justified in their use of deadly force, the San Diego District Attorney’s office announced Monday. Body camera video recorded by San Diego Police shows the officers engaged in gunfire with Joe Darwish on June 23, 2018. Police responded to a disturbance call at the condo on Rolando Court. When they smelled smoke, they called firefighters to the scene, the DA’s office said in a news release. RELATED: Suspect who shot, wounded 2 officers in College Area identified Officers knocked on the front door for more than 20 minutes but received no response, officials said. Firefighters forced entry into the home but were met with gunfire. Darwish shot one officer in the back with a large caliber weapon, according to the DA’s office. Two officers returned fire as they provided cover for the wounded officer, who couldn’t move for several seconds. The wounded officer eventually managed to roll onto his stomach and crawl away from the line of fire. Darwish also shot a second officer during the exchange of gunfire. Darwish had also been hit in the face and arm from one of the officers’ shotguns. “This harrowing incident shows just how quickly a routine call for service can turn deadly for police officers who suddenly found themselves in the line of fire, trying to protect their wounded fellow officers and keep the shooter from endangering members of the public,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan. “It’s a tribute to these officers’ bravery and quick response that the gunman didn’t injure more people or kill the officers and firefighters involved.” Darwish had been wearing a bulletproof vest. He was armed with two homemade guns: an assault weapon and a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, according to the DA. Neither gun was registered. However, the Office of the San Diego County District Attorney did not attempt to get a search warrant. In the days after the shooting, 10News was tipped off by a law enforcement source that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force had wanted to search Darwish's home because they thought he had a weapon and was buying parts to make more weapons.Darwish wasn't supposed to own any weapons because of his criminal history. Our source said the FBI asked the District Attorney's Office to sign off on having a judge issue a search warrant, but the DA’s Office did not do so.For 7 weeks, 10News had been trying to confirm this with the DA’s Office. After our 10News attorneys got involved, the DA’s Office sent us a letter reading in part, “On June 13, 2018, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office received a request by law enforcement to review a draft of an affidavit in support of a search warrant to conduct a search of Mr. Darwish's person, property and residence. The District Attorney's Office determined that the warrant was legally deficient and so advised law enforcement.”June 13th was 10 days before the big shooting. 10News asked the DA’s Office why it turned down the FBI’s request to do a search warrant, but the DA’s Office stated it was "exempt from disclosure".This afternoon, we emailed the DA's Office for new comment. Gavin Newsom said during a news conference that the county could be dropped from the list by Tuesday.Sunday, Aug. 16, was the fifth consecutive day San Diego County reported fewer than 100 positive coronavirus tests.State and county officials have said counties would be removed from the monitoring list if rates remain below 100 positive cases per 100,000 people for three straight days.Of the state's 58 counties, 42 remain on that list; five counties were added, with Santa Cruz County falling off Aug. 14."This is a dynamic list. People come on, people come off, the numbers shift every single week," Newsom said Monday. "I anticipate this week the numbers to shift again and it looks like, all things being equal and the latest reporting period -- 24-hour reporting period, which we will have later this evening -- it's very likely San Diego will join the list of those counties removed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Recent remedies aimed at reducing San Diego's homeless crisis have not been enough, according to a scientific 10News/San Diego Union-Tribune poll.The poll of 800 San Diego adults showed sentiments about addressing homelessness are not positive. When asked if they believed if homelessness was getting better, worse, or staying the same in San Diego, only 11 percent said it was getting better. About 60 percent said it's getting worse.Many believe that blame lies at the top of local government. When asked who is most responsible for reducing homelessness, 53 percent said elected officials and 18 percent pointed to the homeless and their families.RELATED: Housing crunch: San Diego needs 171,000 new homes by 2029So what's led to San Diego's homelessness? Of those surveyed, 33 percent believe housing costs have contributed most to the homeless crisis, 22 percent said substance abuse, and 20 percent said mental health issues.Recently, San Diego officials opened three temporary tent shelters to try and transition some of the city's homeless population into housing. When asked if they thought the tents helped, 51 percent said yes, 20 percent said no, and 29 percent were not sure.A report by the San Diego Housing Commission shows from December 2017 to March 2018, 946 people have exited the three tents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the man shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent following a confrontation Friday.According to police, David Angel Villalobos-Baldovinos, 30, was shot by an agent after entering the US illegally.Police say Villalobos-Baldovinos, a Mexican National, tried to enter the US illegally and was confronted by an agent just before 6 p.m. October 23 in San Ysidro.Villalobos-Baldovinos reportedly fought with the agent, who police say received minor injuries during the scuffle. The agent then fired his weapon, hitting the suspect one time in the torso, police say. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
