(KGTV) - An afternoon drive on the I-805 was interrupted by an explosion of glass, and a very close call.Just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jennifer Opdahl was northbound in the slow lane, and traffic was flowing. As she drove under the East Palomar Street overpass, she heard a close 'boom.' She didn't see anything flying at her, but she felt something."Kind of an explosion. Just heard glass splintering. It clearly came from my above my head. I think I ducked and screamed, but I was still driving," said Opdahl.When she later got out, she could barely believe what she was seeing: the sunroof on her Volkswagen Golf was shattered. Under the glass is a panel which slides back and forth. Whatever struck likely bounced off. Opdahl is thankful the sunroof wasn't open. The roof is inches from where her head was. "I dodged a bullet. I very easily could be dead right now," said Opdahl.Ophdal believes that bullet was a something heavy tossed from the overpass. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Facing a nearly million budget shortfall, the superintendent of Sweetwater Union High School District revealed a proposal Friday to issue more than 230 layoff notices to teachers and staff and eliminate a program that helps struggling students graduate.According to agenda documents posted Friday afternoon, Dr. Karen Janney will ask the Board of Trustees to eliminate 237 positions, including 182 teachers and all 23 librarians.Sweetwater’s financial woes came to light in 2018 after the district miscalculated its budget by million.RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District approves interim budget with million shortfall“To see financial ineptitude affect people’s lives this way, it’s devastating,” said Sweetwater Education Association Vice President Cesar Fernandez. “It’s a kick in the gut. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man on suspicion of breaking into a Wells Fargo bank in Chula Vista early Thursday morning.Bank security personnel contacted Chula Vista police at around 2 a.m. after they saw a man break the front window at the branch on 1232 Broadway and enter the business.According to police, security cameras showed the man “going through the drawers behind the counters.”Police surrounded the bank as some officers entered the business. Officers arrested the man, later identified as 25-year-old Rene Torres, without incident.Police said officers at the scene determined Torres “pried open most of the cash drawers but was unable to access the vault or currency storage areas. He did cause a lot of damage to the interior of the building.”ABC 10News learned officers discovered several rolls of coins in the suspect’s backpack that police presumed to be from the bank.Torres was arrested on suspicion of burglary and booked at CVPD headquarters. (KGTV) -- A group of parents from the Sweetwater Union High School district have started a petition hoping to push the district to allow their student-athletes to return to practice.As of Tuesday night, the petition has over 1,100 signatures. The parents want their children to follow all safety and social distancing guidelines, but they say the district has told them the kids can't practice. The petition gives examples of other school districts in San Diego County that have allowed their student athletes to return to practice. The petition even suggests that district officials are keeping sports shut down to balance Sweetwater's multi-million dollar budget deficit.Parents argue that not having sports is affecting their children's mental health and that not practicing could put them at a disadvantage once the seasons starts and when it comes time to get sports scholarships.
