DETROIT, Mich. -- The Detroit Police Department is responding to a video that shows an officer fatally shooting a dog in its own yard.Officers say it happened Aug. 3 on the east side of the Michigan city.The video shows the dog in a yard latching onto a police K-9's snout and not letting go. The officer then drew her weapon and shot the dog, which died from its injuries."It's unfortunate that it came to this. We do not like to see any animal hurt, especially these K-9 officers. They are truly dog lovers and champions for K-9s. But at this point, her dog was being severely injured and had no choice," Commander Darin Szilagy said.Detroit police did internally investigate and cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.That K-9 officer continues to be evaluated and treated for injuries. (KGTV) - The California Thoroughbred Racing Board postponed a vote on the use of riding crops at their meeting Thursday.The board was scheduled to vote on the issue but decided to move it to the December meeting.Two different versions of the regulation have been proposed.One would allow jockeys to hold a crop during race, but would disqualify the horse if the jockey used the crop to whip the horse during a race.The second version broadens the acceptable use of the crop to include “tapping of the neck” and for use in directing the horse without contact, but would still not permit a jockey to raise the crop to forcefully whip a horse.Del Mar Thoroughbred Club CEO, Joe Harper, said he supports the phaseout of whips.“I’m hopeful we can get to a point where the whip is not used at all,” said Harper. “It’s a horrible visual.” 855

Tate Reeves has invited local lawmakers and other officials to the state governor's mansion for Christmas parties in the coming days, according to Mississippi Today and the Washington Post.According to Mississippi Today, Reeves, a Republican, has issued executive orders that limit indoor gatherings to no more than 10 people, limit outdoor gatherings to 50 people and require the use of masks or facial coverings indoors for 54 of the state's 82 counties. Those orders include Hinds County, home of the state capital of Jackson and the governor's mansion.But despite those orders, Reeves has reportedly sent invitations to state and district elected officials throughout the state to attend three separate Christmas parties at the governor's mansion, including parties for both the state Senate and House of Representatives.While it's not known how many people are invited to each party, it would appear that more than 10 people would be attending.
