CHENGDU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-eight miners were trapped in a colliery flood in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Sunday, the local safety watchdog said.The accident happened at 11 a.m. in Weiyuan County of Neijiang City.Altogether 41 miners were working underground when a pit of Batian Coal Mine was flooded. Thirteen of them escaped, said Lin Shucheng, chief of the provincial work safety bureau.He said rescuers had begun pumping flood water from the pit early in the afternoon. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has ordered a fresh crackdown on the infringement of well-known foreign and domestic brands' intellectual property rights (IPRs).Greater efforts must be made to fight the production and sale of pirated books, audio, video, software, medicine, food and agricultural products, Liu Jinguo, deputy minister of public security, said at a meeting in Beijing Friday, according to a statement posted on the MPS website Saturday.The special nationwide campaign started Friday and will last until March 2011.At a Nov. 5 meeting, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged government agencies to target the root causes of IPRs infringement while strengthening IPRs protection.In a statement Xinhua received Friday, the MPS said Chinese police in a special March 2006 operation uncovered 3,775 cases of IPRs infringement.In a July 2007 campaign conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Intelligence, Chinese police arrested over 20 in connection to the cases.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia Gu Xiaojie on Friday signed an agreement on the provision of aid to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).The grant amounting to 30 million RMB, (over 4 million U.S. dollars), will be used to supply equipment and materials for AMISOM. The signing of this agreement comes in the wake of the adoption by the United Nations Security Council, on Dec. 22, of resolution 1964(2010), in which it, inter alia, requested the Secretary- General to continue to provide a logistical support package for AMISOM, for a maximum troop strength of 12,000, as called for by resolution 1863 (2009).In resolution 1964(2010), the Security Council also called on UN Member States and regional and international organizations to make direct bilateral donations in support of AMISOM.By generously providing aid to AMISOM, the People's Republic of China is responding to the call made by the United Nations Security Council and the earlier appeal by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for AU partners to support the ongoing efforts in Somalia, AU said in a statement. Gu Xiaojie reiterated China's continued commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the AU in the area of peace and security and to support all endeavors in this regard. He lauded AU's efforts and resolve towards the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Lamamra stated said that "China has, over the years, been providing multifaceted assistance to the AU and African countries as they strive to address the many challenges facing the continent. BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- China is trying to have more workers and farmers and fewer university graduates working as public servants because university graduates may have achieved academically, but farmers and workers often have grass-roots life experience.But achieving the goal has not been easy -- for the government, and workers and farmers as well.The annual National Public Servant Exam on Dec. 5 attracted more than 1 million candidates for 16,000 vacancies around the country, according to Nie Shengkui, a senior State Administration of Civil Service official.For the first time, it was stipulated that workers and farmers were preferred for some of the positions, in a move to make the exam more inclusive.As part of the pilot project, a total of 14 positions in grass-roots branches of central government departments at the county-level or below - including customs, taxation and rail police - in the regions of Guangdong, Sichuan, Xinjiang and Gansu were reserved for workers and farmers.Including more grass-roots workers and farmers in the exam is an improvement in the civil servant selection process, said Zhao Shuming, a professor of human resource management at Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province.Compared with university graduates, workers and farmers are suited to some public service positions that involve work with grass-roots people, Zhao said.However, according to Nie, only 62 workers and farmers of the 171 qualified applicants took the exam."The competition in the public service exam is fierce, and I believe many workers and farmers lacked the confidence to take the exam," said Li Zhen, an official in Sichuan's provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security.Li said that to his knowledge, there were no workers and farmers that took the exam in the province."Become a civil servant? UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. "We will continue to work with the international community to contribute to the peace, stability and development in Sudan."
