LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Kentucky judge ruled Tuesday that a grand juror in the Breonna Taylor case is allowed to speak publicly. The grand juror alleges the jury was not given a chance to weigh charges directly connected to Taylor's death against the Louisville police officers who shot her.Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Annie O'Connell released a statement in her ruling, saying the order is not intended to coerce, compel or even encourage any grand juror to come forward. It merely grants a grand juror's request to do so and gives others the option. 558
Millions of renters are safe from eviction after the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued an eviction moratorium at the beginning of September. The moratorium blocks landlords from evicting tenants from their homes, over concern of further spreading COVID-19.Now, landlords are pushing back on the mandate.“My lender wants to get paid,” said Florida landlord Andy Orfitelli.For Orfitelli in Florida to landlord Rebecca Welsh in Kentucky, many landlords have said they cannot afford the financial burden the moratorium is now putting on them.“Literally, right now, I am supporting three homes, households, not just mine,” said Welsh, who is currently expecting a child.“We are concerned that an order like this could force many operators into bankruptcy and those properties could be lost,” said Bob Pinnegar, who is with the National Apartment Association (NAA).The NAA has joined landlords in at least three states in a lawsuit against the federal ban on most evictions.“We were forced into this situation with the inaction of Congress in putting together a stimulus package, and then, the combination of the CDC order laid over top of that,” explained Pinnegar. “It has forced us to where we have to take legal action.”The NAA explained with the lawsuit, its goal is not for landlords to be able to push residents out of their homes, but rather it hopes it pushes Congress to take action and fund the mandate.“This is really to try to force Congress to get back to the table and talk about a solution here,” said Pinnegar. ”We have been told by members of Congress on both the Republican and Democratic side that the next stimulus bill will contain relief for renters, but the bill is being held hostage to our current political environment.”The National Apartment Association wants a stimulus package with money allocated to renters, instead of a moratorium, because the money would trickle down to help landlords pay their mortgages and keep their property. Madison Wilson, an elementary school student in California, is raising money to donate multicultural crayons and books to local schools.Wilson learned that Crayola will be releasing a 24-pack of multicultural crayons called 'Colors of the World' in July and asked her mom if she could raise the funds to donate these crayons to her school.Wilson said she wanted children of all colors of skin to be able to accurately draw themselves in school.She also wants to use the money she raises to purchase multicultural books from local book stores and donate them as well.Wilson's deadline to raise the money is June 30. She had raised ,790 of her ,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin has finished its recount of votes cast in this month’s presidential election, with only miniscule changes in the results that saw Democrat Joe Biden defeat Republican Donald Trump in the battleground state.Dane County, which includes the state capital of Madison, reported only small changes in its vote totals on Sunday, mirroring the earlier results of the recount conducted in Milwaukee County.Trump gained 45 votes in Dane County, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.Biden won the state by nearly 20,600 votes and his margin in Milwaukee and Dane counties was about 2-to-1.As a result of the million recount, which was paid for by the Trump campaign, Biden’s lead over Trump in the swing state actually grew by 87 votes, The Washington Post reports.Trump’s next move in Wisconsin will likely be in court. However, the state is expected to certify the results on Tuesday. It will be the last to certify among the six states where Trump has tried to upend the certification process. 1034
Many voters have already cast their ballots, but that doesn't mean we'll know the election results right away. Experts say all of the ingredients are there for this election to be highly contested.“There are a lot of different reasons why the election may not be decided by the morning of November 4, and a lot of lawsuits may start to fly once that happens,” said Claire Finkelstein, law professor and director of the Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law at the University of Pennsylvania.With a record number of ballots coming in by mail, Finkelstein says the counting period will be lengthy.If a candidate declares victory on election night, but then more results come in, there could be calls for recounts, especially in states where the results are close. That could mean litigation over the counting procedures.Each states' elector will cast their vote on December 14. Then Congress meets on January 6 to count those votes and name the winner.If no candidate has a majority of the electoral votes, or if the counting period goes on and the election is still undecided, it is possible that the House of Representatives must decide.Finkelstein says that would be extraordinary and complicated.“It would likely be very contested as well, but one way or another by January 20, there needs to be a new president being sworn in,” said Finkelstein.The professor says this election is also entangled with the new Supreme Court justice.Like for Pennsylvania, which could now see a new decision on allowing mail-in ballots received up to three days after Election Day, the Supreme Court could also be involved in recounts, as happened in Florida in 2000. 1659
