BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a reception in Beijing Monday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. Addressing the event, Chen Haosu, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), a major non-governmental organization, said, "The friendship between the two countries had endured the test of time and changes in the world." BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Drought-hit regions in northern China are forecast to have moderate to heavy rain Wednesday and Thursday, the National Meteorological Center said Tuesday.     The regions include Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region where more than 200,000 livestock have died due to drought, Heilongjiang Province where 1.47 million hectares of farmland were hit by drought, Liaoning and Jilin provinces.     A severe drought has hit China's northern part, affecting 11.33million hectares of crops, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     Among the total affected crops, 4.2 million hectares suffered serious drought and 1.07 million hectares dried up. About 3.9 million people and about 4.37 million livestock had difficulties getting water.     Yuan Zipeng, deputy director of the Liaoning provincial observatory, said the long-anticipated rain would "obviously" relieve the two-month-long drought that led to drinking water shortages for 792,200 people and 242,200 livestock in the province.     In order to increase the rainfall, the provincial bureau has prepared 1,269 rocket shells along with three aircraft to seed the clouds, Yuan said.     In Liaoning alone, 32 million hectares of farmland were hit by drought.     The water resources department in Inner Mongolia said 1.89 million people and 4.27 million livestock faced drinking water shortages. More than 200,000 livestock died as 71 percent of the region's pastures were severely hit by drought.     Qinggele, a herdsman in Bayan Zhuoer, Inner Mongolia, said his family had to use donkeys to carry water 15 km away.     Authorities in Inner Mongolia made artificial rain more than 1,000 times as the region saw the worst drought in the past 50 years. Officials also helped residents find more water sources and build more water-saving and irrigation projects.     Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged government agencies to place "top priority" on anti-drought efforts during his tour of the drought-hit regions in Liaoning, Inner Mongolia and Jilin on Monday and Tuesday.     Local governments were also urged to expand irrigation by speeding up construction of reservoirs and properly conducting artificial precipitation as "the drought took place in major grain production bases at the key maturity period for crops, which will greatly affect agriculture production".

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China said on Sunday the U.S. decision to impose special protectionist tariffs on tire imports from China is grave trade protectionism and goes against its commitments made at the Group of 20 summit.     "We hereby express our strong discontentment and firm opposition to the U.S. decision, which was made regardless of China's solemn stance," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement.     U.S. President Barack Obama decided to impose a tariff on tires imported from China on Sept. 11, which will begin with a 35-percent duty the first year and decrease to 30 percent the second year and 25 percent the third year on passenger vehicle and light-truck tires from China.     "The United States, by making the decision, failed to honor its commitments made at the G20 financial summit and abused trade remedy measures, which is grave trade protectionism and will undermine the China-U.S. economic and trade ties as well as the early recovery of world economy," Jiang said.     China has lodged solemn representation to the U.S. side and reserves its right to take further actions, Jiang said.

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese economy is experiencing a "V" shape recovery and the growth rate may reach 8 percent both this year and next year, said Chinese economist Fan Gang said here Saturday.     Fan, a monetary policy adviser to China's central bank, said at the 2009 annual conference of CEO in Beijing, that the economy will see a sustainable recovery and will be back to normal in 2011,according to a report of the China News Service.     He predicted that the real estate investment will increase by around 30 percent in 2010, which will add one percentage point to economic growth.     Corporate investment is expected to grow prominently next year and as the global trade is warming up, Chinese export, which still enjoys the cost advantage, will recover.       "After the economy is back to normal in 2010, the government will adjust the macro-economic policy. But before that happens, the current stimulus policy should stay to sustain the recovery," he said.     Fan said people should adjust their expectation of economic growth and not regard recovery simply as a double-digit growth. A growth grate of 8 percent to 9 percent is sustainable growth.
