Voters in Mississippi voted to approve a new state flag design.Lawmakers took action this summer to retire the former Mississippi state flag, which contained the Confederate battle emblem.The rebel symbol is widely seen as racist.In the last two months, the process to design and vote on a new flag has moved fast.There was a call to artists to help design a new flag. By law, the new flag must include the phrase, “In God We Trust,” and could not include any depictions of the Confederate battle flag.The designs were narrowed to five based on a public online vote and feedback. Then a commission narrowed it down to a final option.That option, including a magnolia, the state flower, and red, blue and yellow bands, was on the ballot for voters to approve. 766

VISTA (CNS) - A man and woman were being sought Sunday after the man allegedly rammed and disabled a sheriff's deputy's patrol car while fleeing the scene of a theft at a 7-Eleven store.The theft happened at 2:10 p.m. and someone at the store began following the suspect who was driving a stolen car, according to Lt. William Amavisca of the sheriff's department.Deputies were notified of the theft and caught up to the suspect, who then rammed a deputy's vehicle on East Vista Way, Amavisca said. The deputy's vehicle was disabled. No injuries were reported.The suspect fled the scene and deputies later found the car abandoned and disabled, the lieutenant said. The driver and his female passenger apparently fled the scene on foot.A deputy recognized the man as having a felony arrest warrant, Amavisca said. 819

(KGTV) — Vista Unified School District union workers say they are worried their jobs are on the line and say the district could be looking at bankruptcy.Union workers rallied Thursday ahead of a district board meeting over a million budget shortfall. Union President Bill Faust represents 1,400 support staffers at Vista Unified, including custodians, secretaries and food service workers who are concerned for their jobs since those are historically among the first to be cut. Faust says the board approved almost million to add unnecessary 8th periods to two high schools and another 1,000 to fire the district's superintendent two weeks ago. He says the board is spending money it doesn't have."We are concerned. With this board mismanaging funding," Faust said. (CNS) - A verdict has been reached in the trial of a woman and her gun instructor who are accused of carrying out a plan to kill the woman's estranged husband.A jury has found Diana Lovejoy, 44, guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Welcon McDavid Jr. was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, but the reading of the verdict had to be postponed because Lovejoy passed out. Lovejoy and McDavid Jr. were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder in the Sept. 1, 2016, attack on 45-year-old Greg Mulvihill, who was wounded in the 11 p.m. shooting in Carlsbad.Police allege Lovejoy and McDavid planned the crime and that the latter - - who worked at a gun range where Lovejoy was taking marksmanship lessons -- called the victim, arranged to meet him in the alley and opened fire on him with a rifle while hiding in a patch of bushes.Court records indicated Lovejoy and Mulvihill were in the midst of a contentious divorce, and that she had obtained a restraining order against him on accusations of emotional and sexual abuse.Mulvihill took the stand during the trial and described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and, at first, he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the shooter in front of him.Mulvihill testified about a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife.Mulvihill said he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad out of desperation, fearing Lovejoy would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat, but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him.Before he knew what was happening, Mulvihill said he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back. McDavid faces 50 years to life behind bars, and Lovejoy could be sentenced to 25 years to life.After court, the jury foreperson, Erin Reed,  told reporters the defense version of the shooting "seemed too far-fetched." 2224

Virgin Galactic is preparing to land among the stars.On Wednesday, Virgin Galactic said they were working on its final preparations at its base in New Mexico as the VSS Unity is scheduled to launch into space from Spaceport America sometime in the fall.The company said the ship would be crewed by two pilots and several research payloads in the cabin.Virgin Galactic says its top priority is safety, so they want to make sure the pilots are prepared for the task at hand.To do just that, they will be using VMS Eve as an in-flight simulator. The pilots will use Eve to practice the identical approach and landing pattern since it's similar to Unity's, Chief Pilot Dave Mackay stated."The cockpit structure of Eve is almost identical to that of Unity: the same pilot seats and windows, as well as very similar flight controls and instruments," Mackay said in the press release.The company will go through a full, planned rehearsal before the VSS Unity takes flight. 973
