An online platform connecting patients of color with doctors has seen record growth during the pandemic.HUED's goal is to help Black and Latinx patients get what they call “culturally competent care,” which means physicians who understand racial differences.“There are a lot of psychological barriers that exist in the health care system, which lead to fear, distrust, comfortability and lack of access to quality care for those reasons, and it's because it's systemic,” said Kimberly Wilson, founder and CEO of HUED.Wilson attributes HUED's spike in growth to the reckoning over racial disparities brought on by the Black Lives Matter movement, paired with the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color.Wilson's own experience of being diagnosed with uterine fibroids launched the idea for the startup. She saw four different white, male doctors near her home. Wilson says all of them either dismissed her pain or told her that she needed a hysterectomy. It wasn't until Wilson saw a Black provider, miles away, that she felt heard and learned of other options.“I wanted to develop a solution to that problem and to improve patient care experiences and really equip patients of color to really be their own self advocate, so that they don't go through the journey that I had,” said Wilson.Patients can sign up to access HUED's database of doctors on their website. Providers interested in being listed go through a vetting process. 1457

An auction house in New Jersey is offering bidders the chance to blow up an Atlantic City casino and hotel once owned by President Donald Trump.Bodnar's Auction Sales says it will open auction bidding Saturday for the chance to press the button that will ignite the controlled implosion of the Trump Plaza Casino and Hotel.According to a description on the live bidding website, all proceeds from the auction will "benefit" the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City."Ever since the start of this pandemic they have seen an increase of young children and adolescents benefit from the services of The Boys & Girl Club and are in need of all the assistance they can get for the community," Bodnar's said in its item description.Bidding for the chance to implode the building is open to anyone, and Bodnar's adds that the demolition can be conducted "anywhere in the world as well as close to the Plaza as we can safely get you there."Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino opened in 1984 — Trump's first property on the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk. However, the casino closed in 2014 and has sat abandoned ever since. In June, Carl Icahn — the senior lender for the Trump Plaza's mortgage — submitted plans to Atlantic for the casino's planned demolition. The city asked that the building be demolished because it had fallen into disrepair, and debris was falling to the boardwalk below. The implosion of the casino is currently slated for early February, according to CNN. Bidding in the auction is slated to open at 7 p.m. ET on January 19. Click here to participate. 1569

Americans will soon have one more alternative to Obamacare, thanks to the Trump administration.Officials Tuesday proposed regulations that will make it easier to obtain coverage through short-term health insurance plans by allowing insurers to sell policies that last just under a year. The new rules stem from an executive order President Donald Trump signed in October aimed at boosting competition, giving consumers more choices and lowering premiums."Americans need more choices in health insurance so they can find coverage that meets their needs," said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. "The status quo is failing too many Americans who face skyrocketing costs and fewer and fewer choices. The Trump Administration is taking action so individuals and families have access to quality, affordable healthcare that works for them."The proposal would reverse an Obama administration decision to limit the duration of short-term health plans to no more than 90 days in order to make them less attractive.Such plans could roil the Obamacare market, drawing healthier consumers away from the exchanges and pushing up the premiums for those who remain.Short-term health plans, which have been available for years and were originally designed to fill a temporary gap in coverage, are likely to be cheaper than Obamacare policies. But that's because they don't have to adhere to Obamacare's consumer protections, allowing them to do such things as exclude those with pre-existing conditions and base rates on applicants' medical history. Also, they don't have to offer comprehensive coverage. Typically, short-term policies don't provide free preventative care or maternity, prescription drugs and mental health benefits. They can also impose annual or lifetime limits, meaning they may only pay out a set amount -- often million or less -- leaving the policyholder on the hook for the rest. And, unlike Obamacare policies, they don't have to cap consumers' cost-sharing burden at ,350 for 2018.Young and healthy folks may like these plans because they come with lower monthly premiums. But those who actually need care could find themselves having to pay more out of pocket for treatment and medications. In fact, some consumers with these plans have complained that they've been hit with unexpected expenses. Also, insurers aren't required to renew the policies so those who become sick could find themselves unable to sign up again for the same plan."People who buy short-term policies today in order to reduce their monthly premiums take a risk that, if they do need medical care, they could be left with uncovered bills and/or find themselves uninsurable under such plans in the future," wrote Karen Pollitz, senior fellow at the Kaiser Family Foundation, in a recent policy brief.Have you ever had a short-term insurance policy? What was your experience? Tell us about it here.Consumers today can find short-term plans that cost as little as 20% of the least expensive Obamacare plan, according to Pollitz. In its announcement about the proposed rules, the Trump administration said short-term policies are designed to fill a temporary gap in coverage. It will require insurers to notify consumers that the plans are not required to comply with all of Obamacare's mandates. The administration will accept comments on the proposed rule for the next 60 days. Those with short-term policies are not considered insured under the Affordable Care Act and are subject to the penalty for not having coverage. But this will not be an issue after this year since Congress effectively eliminated the individual mandate -- which requires nearly all Americans to be insured or pay a penalty -- starting in 2019 as part of its tax overhaul bill. The proposed regulations are the latest step in the Trump administration's quest to weaken Obamacare. Last month, officials unveiled a proposed rule that would make it easier for small businesses -- and some self-employed folks -- to band together and buy health insurance. That proposal also stemmed from Trump's executive order and is designed to broaden access to what are known as association health plans.  4169

An estimated 1 in 5 Americans reported being victims of package theft over the summer — reaching near “peak levels” — according to a survey from Security.org, a security research site. And porch pirates typically get even more brazen around the holidays.Worried about your Black Friday purchases or Grandma’s gingerbread cookie care box arriving safely? Here’s how to protect your holiday packages.Track your packagesMost delivery services provide tracking information so you can easily follow along with order updates. The United States Postal Service, FedEx and others also allow you to sign up for shipment alerts through a combination of email, text, phone call or app notifications. Once you get an estimated delivery day or time, arrange for someone to be home during that window.Leave special delivery instructionsTry as you might, perfectly timing your package’s arrival isn’t always possible. If you suspect nobody will be around to accept the order, leave specific instructions for the delivery driver. For example, you can require a signature for delivery or request the package be left at a side door or with a neighbor. You’ll likely need an account with the carrier and the order tracking number to set preferences. Some services charge for certain special requests, so read the details carefully before choosing an alternative.Install a security cameraA front-door or doorbell camera can scare off would-be thieves, but it’s not a guarantee. In the event someone swipes your package, having one can still help you out, though. You can submit footage as evidence when you file a claim or police report.Plus, some cameras offer protection plans. The Kangaroo front door security kit comes with one year of the Kangaroo Complete plan, which reimburses up to 0 for stolen packages twice a year.Allow Amazon to leave packages inside your garage or gateKey by Amazon, a smart home system, lets you get packages dropped off inside your garage, gate, car or home (in-home and in-car deliveries have been paused due to COVID-19). With this method, drivers get secure, one-time access to unlock the door and leave your package. But Key works only with Amazon orders, and there are some requirements: You must have a Prime membership, live in an eligible area, purchase the necessary equipment or own a compatible car.Send packages to a facility, locker or storePicking up an order somewhere other than your residence isn’t the most convenient option, but it could be the safest. Consider making a post office, self-service locker or retail location the shipping destination. You can reroute FedEx packages to a nearby Walgreens or send Amazon orders to a secure locker. UPS has Access Point pick-up locations at its stores as well as Michaels, CVS Pharmacy and Advance Auto Parts.Ordering from a retailer with brick-and-mortar locations? Explore curbside or in-store pickup options. If something goes wrong, contact the retailer or delivery serviceIf your package is missing, reach out to the merchant first, then the carrier responsible for delivery (if necessary). They may issue a replacement or refund your money, depending on the circumstances and their order policies.Check your credit card details and insurance policyIf the retailer or delivery company won’t cover you, your existing credit card or insurance provider might. Many credit cards include purchase protection, a benefit that covers stolen items up to a certain amount. Purchase protection usually applies only for a specific period of time following a purchase.Homeowners and renters insurance policies often include protection for stolen personal property, too. Check yours to find out if you’re covered. Insurance providers, like credit card companies, typically require you to file a claim and police report to take advantage. However, most deductibles are set at 0 or more, so you’ll probably end up paying more out of pocket to file a claim than your item is worth.File a police reportFiling a police report can still be a good idea even if you don’t submit a claim through your credit card or insurance company. The information you provide can help law enforcement track down thieves and possibly reunite you with your stolen goods.More From NerdWalletHow to Get the Best Amazon Black Friday 2020 DealsLaptop and Computer Black Friday 2020 Deals: Are They Worth It?Ring Doorbell Black Friday 2020 Deals: Are They Worth It?Lauren Schwahn is a writer at NerdWallet.
