BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday again expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, urging the U.S. to respect China's core interests and withdraw related arms sales plan.     "The U.S. arms sales to Taiwan infringe upon China's security interest as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and interfere with China's internal affairs," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a statement.     Jiang made the comments in response to a reporter's question on U.S. government approval for Raytheon Company to sell 1.1 billion U.S. dollars of Patriot antimissile system to Taiwan.     "We have raised solemn representations to the U.S. side," said Jiang. "We urge the U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan to avoid undermining China-U.S. cooperation."     Jiang said, "We urge the U.S. to clearly recognize the severe consequences of arms sales to Taiwan, reject the cold war mentality, and adhere to the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, especially the principles established in the Joint Communique on Aug. 17, 1982."     The "Aug. 17 communique" stated that the U.S. would not seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales.     "We also persuade the Raytheon Company to stop pushing or participating in arms sales to Taiwan, and refrain from doing anything that harms China's sovereignty and security interest," Jiang said.

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese leaders including President Hu Jintao on Wednesday watched Peking Opera at the National Center for the Performing Arts in a gala to mark the New Year.     Top legislator Wu Bangguo, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, and other senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang also watched the performance together with nearly 1,000audience.     The programs include excerpts from modern Peking Opera "The Red Lantern" and a series of traditional works such as "Si Lang Tan Mu", or "The fourth son visits his mother". CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday visited Canterbury University to open the second Confucius Institute in New Zealand.     Li said during the opening ceremony that cultural and educational cooperation are important parts of relations between China and New Zealand.     China has become the largest source of overseas students and the fastest growing source of international tourists to New Zealand, while people in New Zealand are taking a strong interest in studying the Chinese language and getting acquainted with Chinese culture, he said.     The new Confucius Institute, jointly founded by Canterbury University and China's Huazhong Science and Technology University, represents another achievement of the exchanges and cooperation between the two nations, Li said.     He said he hoped the institute would become a link between the two countries in cultural and educational exchanges. PARIS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The preparation for the 2010 Shanghai Expo has proceeded into exhibits arrangements and service operation as site constructions are mostly completed, China's representatives of Executive Committee of the Shanghai Expo announced here Tuesday in its last report of progress in the 146thGeneral Assembly of the Bureau of International Exhibition (BIE).     With less than six months ahead of the 2010 Shanghai Expo, all preparation on construction and operation are underway smoothly as scheduled, said Yang Xiong, the deputy director of the executive committee for Shanghai Expo and vice mayor of Shanghai.     Transportation infrastructures inside and outside the Expo site will basically finished by the year end and put into use by the end of next March. Supporting public utilities such as medical treatment, drinking water and communication are also steadily in progress, the report said.     Five permanent structures, namely China Pavilion, Performance Center, Expo Center Theme Pavilion and Expo Boulevard will be completed by the year ends. Twenty-six out of the 42 self-built pavilions of foreign participants have completed their structure and 37 out of 42 rented pavilions were accomplished. All the 11 joint pavilions have been completed by now.     By Dec. 1, over 3,400 rooms in apartments in the Expo Village and service apartments in the surrounding areas will be put into service, and the number will reach 6,700 at the end of the year and 7,100 by the end of next March, the report said.     "As major parts of the construction work has finished, we have shifted our focus to operation, such as service, exhibits arrangement and further design and organization of events and forums," Yang told Xinhua.     During the grand cultural events, about 20,000 sessions of various performances will be staged. To date, 200 countries and international organizations have submitted application for National Day and Honor Day events, totaling 633 performances.     The Expo is not only a carnival for China, but also a showcase for worldwide extraordinary culture and innovations. "The success of World Expo 2010 is bound to help rebuild the global confidence in economic development, and further promote international exchange and cooperation," said Wang Jinzhen, chief delegate of China to the BIE.     To provide better service for foreign participants, four management departments has formed with professionals and experts to be deployed in different zones to improve on-spot service.     Additionally, during the Expo, about 200,000 volunteers selected from current 500,000 applications will offer services in the sites, on city streets, at airports and docks for visitors from across the world.     Chinese delegation issued invitation to friends all over the world at the assembly.     "I think their preparations (for the Shanghai Expo) are progressing very very well," Secretary General of the BIE Vicente Loscertales told Xinhua. "The thing we have to do is to finish the preparation on time and open our doors on May 1 to the whole world, in which I have total and utter confidence."

BEIJING, Jan. 10 -- Shanghai has set a GDP growth rate target for the year of more than 8 percent, almost the same as 2009's economic development rate.     Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng yesterday announced the target at a one-day session of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China.     He added the growth rate of value-added output from the service industry should be much higher than the GDP rate.     The city didn't set a higher GDP goal because it wanted to put more effort into restructuring the economy than simply seeking more GDP growth, Yu told the meeting.     The city's GDP growth was estimated to be more than 8 percent last year, a little lower than the average national level. Total retail sales of consumer goods rose by about 14 percent and growth of fixed assets investment was around 10 percent in 2009.     Yu said the targeted rate was a suitable development speed for Shanghai, which was hit by the global financial crisis during its economic restructure transition.     He told the session that the World Expo 2010 Shanghai was the most important task for the government this year.     It requires not only coordination of all districts and departments but also active participation and devotion by citizens, he said.     "We should spare no efforts to ensure a successful, wonderful and unforgettable Expo," he said.     "We should make full use of the opportunity to stimulate investment and consumption, enhance friendly cooperation with the world and build a city with international influence."     Yu emphasized the importance of security during Expo. He requested government officials to strengthen anti-terrorism efforts, guarantee food and drug safety and quality, and keep monitoring and preventing public health events, such as outbursts of swine flu.     To enhance transport during Expo, the government will continue a series of infrastructure works. More Metro lines and cross-river projects will be completed this year.     Construction of the Bund, Shanghai-Nanjing inter-city railway and the Hongqiao transport hub are planned to be finished this year.     Yu stressed that government officials should consider people's interests at all time and listen to their advices. He said the government should reduce impact on life during Expo as much as possible.     Also, Yu said regulation and control in the real estate market will be improved to help it develop in a healthy and sustainable way. And 500,000 new jobs will be created to keep the unemployment rate around 4.5 percent.
