BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a rainstorm alert Wednesday as heavy rains were expected to pound the flood-affected southern provinces. Most regions in south China, including provinces of Guizhou, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and the flood-hit Fujian, Hunan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, would experience heavy rain or rainstorms between 8 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday (Beijing time), the NMC said.Rainstorms were forecast for south China also during the next three days, while regions in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north, and northeastern China would also experience rainfalls, it said. The observatory warned local authorities in south China, especially in the flood-battered regions, to get prepared for possible floods and geological disasters. In Fujian, heavy rains have triggered landslides and flash floods, which engulfed two vehicles in Nanping City and left at least six people dead as of Tuesday.China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has dispatched work teams to the southern provinces of Hunan, Fujian and Guangxi and to Xinjiang after heavy rains hit the regions.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center forecast Thursday that heavy rains would continue during the next 24 hours in northeast China, a region already soaked following weeks of torrential rains. The observatory continued to issue an orange rain alert, the second most serious level, on Thursday, warning that rainstorms would hit most parts of the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Helongjiang over the next 24 hours, adding pressure to the country's efforts to combat floods.Rain-triggered floods have left 1,072 people dead and 619 others missing this year in China. Economic losses were estimated at 210 billion yuan (31.34 billion U.S. dollars), Shu Qingpeng, deputy director of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said Wednesday.Meanwhile, the observatory forecast that heat would continue in south China during the next 24 hours.Temperatures are likely to hit 35 to 38 degrees Celsius in southeast Shaanxi Province, some parts of Sichuan and Guizhou provinces and areas along the Huaihe River. BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic corn supply was adequate, and a recent price increase was the result of market speculation, a senior official told Xinhua Thursday.Shang Qiangmin, director at the China National Grain and Oils Information Center, said both the supply and corn reserves were adequate in China and the government was determined to regulate the corn market."Imbalance between corn supply and demand is a misjudgement," Shang said.Although floods that ravaged the country's northeastern regions in late July have caused adverse impacts on regional corn growing, final output was expected to increase from one year earlier due to the expanding of planting areas, Shang said."China has enough corn reserves to meet market demand," he said. The buying boom in the northeastern region is currently caused by enterprises' increasing corn stocks on speculation of price increase, he said.According to Shang, corn stocks at major grain enterprises in northeastern Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased by 5.12 million tonnes at the end of July compared with one year earlier. The Chinese government has strengthened macro control of corn market by increasing supply and cracking down on illegal activities that force up corn prices. As the world's major corn producer and consumer, China's annual corn production and consumption both exceed 150 million tonnes.

URUMQI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- China sent two chartered aircraft carrying 26 tonnes of new relief materials to Kyrgyzstan early Monday to help refugees who suffered shortages of supplies after violent ethnic clashes this month. The two China Southern Airlines Boeing 757 cargo aircraft brought the materials to the southern Kyrgyzstan city of Osh from Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a spokesman with the carrier's Xinjiang Branch said. The aid materials worth 3 million yuan (440,000 U.S. dollars) include rice, oil, biscuits, black tea, milk powder, blankets, clothes, stationary and sanitary materials, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang in a press release."China hopes the aid will help Kyrgyz authorities to resettle the refugees," Qin said.China Southern Airlines, one of the country's leading carriers, has been heavily involved in the evacuation of Chinese nationals and transportation of relief supplies after clashes broke out between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks in Osh in mid-June.The clashes later spread to the region of Jalalabad, leaving 210 people dead and 2,100 injured.Since June 15, China has sent charter planes to ship altogether 80 tonnes of relief supplies, worth 11 million yuan, to Kyrgyzstan and neighboring Uzbekistan which was flooded with Kyrgyz refugees after the clashes, according to China Southern Airlines.

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Expo 2010 Shanghai is proving to be a boon for successful Chinese entrepreneurs eager to tap into the global market. The 184-day event, which is predicted to attract an estimated 4 million foreign visitors along with global media coverage, is considered to be a golden opportunity for Chinese companies to raise their brands to an international level and explore business opportunities.According to survey released last year by the information office of Shanghai Municipal Government, more than a quarter of the respondents were hoping to visit Shanghai during the Expo to seek future business. The online survey polled 503 foreigners in 44 countries and regions across the world, 30 percent of whom were senior corporate executives.Of the Expo's 58 partners and official sponsors, 47 are Chinese companies, 25 are from Shanghai, 15 are from Beijing and seven from other parts of the country. They contributed a total of more than 7 billion yuan ( billion) in sponsorship fees to the event, averaging more than 100 million each. While the sums are large, the contributors represent only a small portion of the number Chinese firms that want a slice of the Expo pie. Those who are not qualified to partner an official sponsor have sought other means of gaining brand exposure."The Expo is a once-in-a-century opportunity for us to promote our brand on an international scale," said Zhang Yingguang, a public relations manager for Tsingdao Beer, the Chinese industry leader based in Qingdao, Shandong province. The company launched a flurry of billboard advertisements on the city's busiest streets, as well as in metro stations and commercial areas. The ads targeted foreigners by trying to teach them Chinese phrases about drinking. It also made a presence in the Zero Carbon Pavilion at the Expo, where it contributed lamps made out of beer bottles and launched a gourmet TV show with a local TV station.
