SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. What you put as your toppings I can't guarantee."RELATED: Top 7 dessert spots in San DiegoEnter the customizable feature of Churreria. Customers order whether they want their churro stuffed with Nutella or sweet cream or not, and then they can choose from different glazes and toppings, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbs."There's nothing to hide. We want to show you we make it from scratch and it's clean," Tran said.Another fun aspect of Churreria is its sustainability arm.Tran worked with his business partner to do something good with their cooking oil after use. The pair settled on donating the used oil to two areas: A local company that repurposes cooking oil into biofuel and a shelter that uses the oil for soap for homeless individuals."We try to put back into the community instead of just dumping the grease ... and having it hauled away," Tran said. "We're trying to be better for the environment that way." 2164

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials said Friday that the state's ICU capacity dropped dangerously low, prompting warnings to take the latest regional stay-at-home order seriously. The Office of the Governor announced on social media that, "there is less than 10% ICU capacity remaining statewide. We are at a critical moment. Calling all Californians - stay home & wear a mask to save lives. All hands on deck with our health & emergency teams as we address the capacity crisis."The state also broke a single-day record for new COVID-19 cases with 35,468 cases on Friday, and reached a new high in hospitalizations, with 12,013 patients, and ICU cases, at 2,669, Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC said.RELATED: San Diego hospitals lay out plans to distribute vaccines to staffFriday, the state's COVID-19 data showed California's ICU capacity at 9% and a seven-day average 8.4% positivity rate. The Southern California region, which includes San Diego County, currently sits at 6.2% ICU capacity. The figures, however, don't necessarily give a real-time picture of staffed beds available since the state adjusts the percentage based on the ratio of COVID-19 positive and non-coronavirus patients.California's regional stay-at-home orders covered 36 counties, or about 77% of the state, as of Friday.Friday, FDA officials are expected to approve Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine for distribution. According to the CDC, front line medical workers are among the first set to receive the vaccination. 1522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California police officers who leave their departments to join the San Diego Police can now get a ,000 cash bonus. The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the program Tuesday to help SDPD recruit new officers. The department has struggled to recruit and retain officers due to the city’s high cost of living and a pay scale that’s lower than competing police departments. A San Diego Police officer earns a starting salary of ,000 a year. Late last year, the City Council approved a series of salary increases of up to 25 percent through 2020. The San Diego Police Department currently has about 1,860 officers, which is about 180 short of its staffing goal. Chief David Nisleit said Tuesday that SDPD recently lost two officers to Chula Vista, whose entry level officers earn about ,000 a year. “What I’m looking for is to hire experienced law enforcement officers from other areas,” he said. "To make us competitive we had to offer a signing bonus to have them come over.”A lateral police officer - one moving from another department - would earn ,000 upon hire, then another ,000 after training, and the final ,000 after one year of continuous employment. Jack Schaeffer, president of the San Diego Police Officers Association, said bring more officers would make police more available in their communities, which he said has suffered due to staffing shortages. “We have less time to be able to get to know our store owners and business people and the residents, because we’re going from call to call to call,” he said. The council also approved a bonus program for current officers who bring recruits to the Police Academy. Officers can earn a ,000 to ,000 bonus for each recruit.Nisleit said SDPD has 50 recruits now training in the police academy, which is the department’s target. 1839

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City leaders welcomed a new North County park Wednesday, highlighted by a specially created area for the playground's most adventurous.Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park sports five acres of turf field, two dog parks, playground and "discovery play" area, skate plaza, and San Diego's first free, public parkour area and bike pump track. The park also includes a 17,000-square-foot recreation center, featuring a gymnasium, multi-purpose building, and outdoor courtyard. The center's solar panels also promise to lower the park's energy consumption by 36 percent, according to the city.RELATED: San Diego County park rangers recommend these trails in 2019The park is the 23rd park to open as part of Mayor Kevin Faulconer's ambition to open or improve 50 parks in five years. Another 32 parks are in various stages of design and construction, according to the Mayor's office.“Every neighborhood in San Diego deserves a great community park,” Mayor Faulconer said in a release. “That’s why we are in the middle of the largest park expansion project in modern history. With each new park we open, we’re improving the quality of life for our residents, investing in our neighborhoods and leaving behind a better San Diego.”The park was funded through the Pacific Highlands Ranch Facilities Benefit Assessment funds and will be maintained and operated by the city. The park is located off of Carmel Valley Road and open daily to the public. 1466
