BURBANK, Calif. (KGTV) - A brush fire broke out Friday afternoon in the hills east of Burbank.Burbank firefighters and police officers closed roads near Sunset Canyon Drive and Harvard Road about 2 p.m.The location of the fire is above a residential neighborhood. Crews are evacuating hikers in the area.There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.The flames are burning near the site of the La Tuna Fire, which burned more than 7,000 acres and five homes in September 2017.10News is monitoring breaking developments.  545

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., (KGTV)-- Thousands of US Marines stormed a makeshift town today as part of the largest amphibious exercise in Camp Pendleton's history. With their guns drawn and light on their feet, the Marines at Camp Pendleton have one objective: secure the Red Beach Combat Town. The town is a collection of makeshift structures off Las Pulgas Road just west of Interstate 5.The scenario was this: The soldiers are fighting the enemy from a near-pier threat. The Marines got battle-ready at sea, aboard the USS Somerset and USS Macon Island, thanks to their special partnership with the US Navy. "We spend a lot of time on ship, a lot of time coordinating with the sailors themselves inside the welded deck inside the ship," Amphibious Assault [AAV] Section Leader, Sgt. Kenneth Larkin said. "Being able to rely on each other for the safety of our vehicles and our members, it's phenomenal."From ship to shore, the men and women arrive on their AAV. They creep onto shore at seven mph, then book it on land. The crew drops off the infantry, ant the combat simulation begins. This scenario kicks off this year's Steel Knight Exercise. With 13,000 Marines and sailors participating, it is the largest iteration of the Steel Knight Exercise at Camp Pendleton."The Marine Corps prides itself on being amphibious, so this is one of those exercises where the division gets involved. The entire division of Camp Pendleton," Infantry Platoon Sgt. Ethan Rhoades said. "It basically hones our skills to actually go from ship to shore and to seize an objective likely would in a real-time conflict."For two weeks straight, the men and women will repeat the aerial and amphibious exercises. Tough training in the elements will prepare them for real-life scenarios. "Just know that America's sons and daughters are working hard in the First Marine Division to prepare to win this nation's battles," 1st Marine Division Spokesperson, Lt. Cameron Edinburgh said. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman was stabbed in the parking lot of the Carlsbad Costco Friday evening, police said. Officers arrived at the store at 951 Palomar Airport Road east of Interstate 5 just before 3 p.m. They found the victim in serious condition with several stab wounds.The suspect, 62-year-old Charles Higgins, left the scene before police arrived. He was arrested later in Temecula with the help of Murrieta Police, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.Police say the victim and suspect knew each other and this was not a random act. CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — A Silicon Valley tech CEO is apologizing after he made racist comments and cursed at an Asian-American family that was celebrating a birthday. Raymond Orosa, his wife Jordan Chan, and their kids were celebrating her birthday on July 4th at the Lucia Restaurant & Bar in Carmel Valley, when they say a white man started yelling racist things about Asians.The incident was captured on a video that shows the man cursing and hurling racist insults and the server ordering him to leave."Trump is going f*ck you," the man is heard telling the group. "You f*cking Asian piece of sh*t.""The man in the video is Michael Lofthouse, a CEO of Bay Area-based cloud computing startup Solid8.In a statement issued to media, Lofthouse admits making the comments and says he will be reflecting on his behavior.“My behavior in the video is appalling,” the statement read. “This was clearly a moment where I lost control and made incredibly hurtful and divisive comments. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - A border watch group says there are glaring holes along the border that can be plugged with the help of troops.The Department of Defense sent thousands of troops across the border to areas like the San Ysidro Port of Entry. “I don’t know all the intelligence, but it seems like (the troops) are all in the areas where the fence is pretty secure,” said Dan Russell with the Minutemen. The Minutemen is a citizen’s group dedicated to watching the border for illegal crossings. If they see any, they report them to border patrol. “Maybe they’re expecting thousands to show up in Tijuana or Tecate, but if they’re there in large numbers all they have to do is get on a bus, take the highway, drive an hour, and come over a wide open border,” Russell said.Russell says his group volunteers to watch the mile of the border just southwest of Campo. In that mile stretch, there are about five gaps along the border wall.“About every quarter mile, you’d want some eyes on the border,” he said. 1045
