(KGTV) – A U.S. Forest Service firefighter was injured while battling a vegetation fire that has burned 10 acres in the Cleveland National Forest near the community of Alpine.The firefighter was taken to an area hospital for treatment according to U.S. Forest Service's Anabele Cornejo. No other details were available.Amid strong Santa Ana winds in the area Friday, a wildfire erupted in the Japatul Valley area of San Diego's East County.The blaze was reported just before 1 p.m. Friday near the 21000 block of Japatul Road, southeast of Alpine, according to the California Highway Patrol.According to the CHP, dark smoke was visible from the agency’s Interstate 8 viewpoint. The CHP also noted the strong winds swirling in the area.Cal Fire San Diego said the fire went on to burn at least 10 acres as of 1:55 p.m., but good progress was made in the firefight thanks to crews on the ground and aerial water and retardant drops.No evacuation orders were issued, but residents in the nearby area were told to shelter in place as a precaution.With Santa Ana winds whipping in the county’s inland and mountain areas, a Red Flag warning was in effect until early Saturday morning. 1186

(CNN) -- German police suspect a landscape gardener is responsible for killing one man and injuring two other people from beyond the grave.Bernhard Graumann, 59, was found dead from unknown causes at his home in Mehlingen in western Germany on Friday.Earlier that day, a 64-year-old doctor was killed by an explosion that appeared to come from a booby trap laid outside his practice in Enkenbach-Alsenborn, local police said in a statement.The doctor, who has not yet been named, is thought to have triggered the explosive when he bent down to pick it up, police said.Two days later, a mother and daughter were injured when a log that appeared to have been tampered with exploded in a wood-burning stove in Otterberg, less than six miles away. The younger woman, who has not been named, remains in hospital -- her condition is not thought to be critical.Western Palatinate Police have linked both cases to Graumann, who is said to have had a "bad relationship" with the victims, having been involved in disputes with them in the past. The gardener's death is currently under investigation, pending the results of an autopsy.When officers searched Graumann's home they discovered gunpowder and "other items subject to the weapons law and the Explosives Act," police statements said.Police also took the unusual step of warning other members of the public who may previously have fallen out with Graumann -- whether in a personal or business capacity -- to be on their guard."The police cannot rule out that prior to his death, the deceased had made preparations that could endanger other people's life and limbs," a statement said. (CNS) -- Citing what he called an unprecedented spike in new COVID-19 cases, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the state is hitting an "emergency brake" on economic activity, moving 28 counties -- including Orange -- back to the most restrictive tier of California's matrix governing business operations.The move means 41 of the state's 58 counties are now in the restrictive purple tier, which severely restricts capacity at retail establishments, closes fitness centers and limits restaurants to limited outdoor-only service. The 41 counties represent 94.1% of the state's population. Before Monday, only 13 counties were in the purple tier.The re-classifications will officially take effect Tuesday, according to the governor's office.Newsom said daily cases numbers in the state "have doubled just in the last 10 days. This is simply the fastest increase California has seen since the beginning of this pandemic."Newsom noted that the biggest increase the state had seen previously was in mid-June, when California had a 39.2% increase in new cases in one week. At the start of November, the state saw a 51.3% increase in a one-week period, he said.He called it an "increase simply without precedent in California's pandemic history."Newsom also announced changes in the way counties will be classified in the state's four-tier reopening matrix. Previously, counties could only move backward in the roadmap if they failed to meet key metrics -- the rates of new cases and positive tests -- for two consecutive weeks. Now a county will be moved backward after just one week of elevated numbers.Counties can also potentially be moved back multiple tiers in the matrix if the numbers warrant, Newsom said. Under the new guidelines, counties that are moved backward in the tier system must require businesses to meet the accompanying operating restrictions immediately, as opposed to a previous three- day grace period."We want to see the application and implementation of this new tiered status occur in a 24-hour period," he said.The state previously updated counties' placement in the matrix once a week -- every Tuesday -- but now counties can be moved at any time based on the numbers, the governor said.Newsom said the spike in cases raises concerns about a possible overwhelming of the hospitals. To help prevent such an impact, he said the state has 11 "surge facilities" that can be activated to prevent hospitals from being overrun in particularly hard-hit areas. Those facilities have a total capacity of 1,872 beds.He said the first such facility will be activated in Imperial County.The governor said more announcements could be made later in the week about additional restrictions, including a business curfew -- an idea Los Angeles County is expected to consider this week. (KGTV) — A 5.5-magnitude earthquake was reported near the Ridgecrest area late Wednesday.The quake occurred at about 6:30 p.m. in the Searles Valley area, about 14 miles outside of Ridgecrest, Calif., according to the USGS. Several smaller earthquakes measuring between 2.6 and 2.9 magnitude in the nearby Trona, Calif., area were recorded after the initial shakeup. A 4.2 magnitude aftershock was also felt in the area around 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
