It took four days for The Associated Press and other media outlets to call the presidential election for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Now, recounts and certification of the results will take a bit longer.With races too close to call in Arizona, Nevada and Georgia, Pennsylvania became the battleground that tipped the Electoral College count in Biden’s favor Saturday afternoon.But within hours of declaring victory, President Donald Trump released a statement saying, “Joe Biden has not been certified the winner of any state.”“Technically it's true. Certifying election results takes a while,” said Kira Lerner, the managing editor of Vote Beat, a non-partisan, non-profit covering election administration and voting.“Canvassing is the process of counting the ballots,” said Lerner. “It's what election officials are doing across the country right now. They're working tirelessly, overnight in some cases, to make sure that every single vote is counted in the certification process. Each state has a different deadline.”Certification happens after canvassing – whereby election officials verify that every single ballot was counted and there were no clerical errors. But tallying has taken longer due to record turnout and a surge in mail-in ballots.Still, six states have a deadline of within one week of the election to certify their results and have already done so. (Delaware, Virginia, Vermont, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Louisiana).In 26 states and Washington D.C., the certification deadline is between November 10 and the 30. (Wyoming, Mississippi, Florida, Massachusetts, Idaho, Arkansas, North Dakota, Georgia, Utah, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Maine, Kentucky, Ohio, North Carolina, New Mexico, Minnesota, Indiana, Washington D.C., Alaska, Alabama, Nebraska, Montana, Iowa, Colorado, and Arizona).In 14 states, the certification deadline is in December. But that doesn't mean that we won't know without a doubt who our president elect is, which we already do,” said Lerner.And then there are the recounts. In some states, they are automatically triggered when the victory falls within a razor thin margin. In Georgia, for example that’s .5%.But in the majority of states, candidates, political parties and in some cases voters can request a recount.Currently, the Trump administration is calling for recounts in Wisconsin and Georgia.“In Wisconsin, you have two days after the winner of the race has been certified to call for a recount. In other states, like Georgia, the secretary of state has already said that he will be seeking a recount on Donald Trump's behalf.”Lerner says legal challenges and recounts will likely fail to change the outcome of the election. Indonesian police say they have broken up a child trafficking operation that was allegedly buying and selling babies on Instagram.Four people were arrested, including a 22-year-old mother and 29-year-old suspected broker in Indonesia's second largest city Surabaya, police said in a press conference Sunday.A midwife and a suspected buyer were also arrested on the resort island of Bali.Authorities were alerted to an account on the popular photo-sharing site with the handle "Konsultasi Hati Privat," or Private Heart Consultation, that presents itself as offering pregnancy consultations and adoption services.However, police said they have found evidence that monetary transactions were being carried out.The head of criminal investigation unit in Surabaya's police force , AKBP Sudamiran, said Tuesday that his team foiled an attempt by a 22-year-old mother, identified as LA, to sell her 11-month-old baby to a buyer in Bali, known as NS, using the messaging service WhatsApp. The baby was allegedly being offered for 15 million rupiah (about 7).The Instagram account was still active early Friday and had more than 700 followers, having been running for about a year. It has since been taken down.Images featured on the page included black and white photos of ultrasounds, pregnant mothers and babies with their faces blurred.In one image posted on September 15, a baby, referred to as C86, was featured alongside information such as age, gender and religion. A contact number is provided with a message urging those who want to adopt or who want to leave a child for adoption to get in touch.The account also featured screenshots from WhatsApp conversations between the account owner and pregnant women or mothers. In one conversation, a woman who is seven months pregnant says she is unmarried and wants to find someone to adopt her child and to hide her until she gives birth so that her family doesn't find out.The head of Indonesia's National Commission for Child Protection (KPAI), Sustano, who like many Indonesians has one name, said social media has changed the way traffickers conduct business."In the old days, the transaction happened in person and it was usually arranged through a middleman," he said. "But now, they are using new and more advance methods, through social media like Instagram and Facebook. The cyber world has become a tool for promotion and transaction."Sustano says traffickers are drawn to social media because "it is considered more effective, the deal happens directly between seller and buyer, and it is not easy to be detected by law enforcement.""If the use of Instagram is proven in this case then it shows how traffickers constantly adapt to new methods for their trade," added Amanda Bissex, Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF. She believes it's now important that authorities "adapt their policy and legislative response to prevent such crimes, particularly against children, young girls and women."Indonesia is a major source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimates that 100,000 children are trafficked each year in Indonesia, with the majority being forced into the sex trade.In its 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report, the US government rated Indonesia as Tier 2, saying that the country "did not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking." INDIANAPOLIS — A part-time trainer at Lutheran High School in Indianapolis says she was told she is no longer welcome there because she is gay.Krystal Brazel had worked at Lutheran High School as a game-only athletic trainer for the past five years. But in February, Brazel was told she would no longer be allowed to work, coach, or volunteer at the school because of her sexual orientation."I think they really decided to make an example of me," Brazel said. "It breaks my heart. I know what I poured into that school."When Brazel started as the athletic trainer at Lutheran High School she was diagnosing injuries on a folding table in the hallway. She started collecting donations because she said the student-athletes deserved more. Eventually, she helped create an athletic training room."I remember going to school thinking I don't ever want to be a high school athletic trainer. That's why I got my masters," Brazel said. "Life happened. And I started at Lutheran just helping out and I realized this is really God's calling for me is to have an impact on these people's lives and maybe be their first real gay Christian that they had an interaction with."In February, Brazel was called into a meeting with the athletic director and head of school and asked to read a handbook that she said stated homosexuality is a sin. She was then asked to sign saying she could follow it, which she couldn't.Brazel is engaged to be married on July 18 to her fiance, Samantha. She was ultimately told she could no longer coach the softball team she just helped lead to a state title in 2019.In June, Franciscan Health and Lutheran High School could not come to an agreement allowing her to continue as the athletic trainer either. Brazel is now sharing her story, pushing for change for the future."I still love them," Brazel said.
