You’ve probably noticed new electronic payment screens when purchasing coffee or other items at a counter. With the new systems, do customers end up tipping more?  An automatic tipping system called Toast says since 2017, quick service restaurants using their system have received tips on nearly 60 percent of credit card orders, compared to 28 percent previously.    "The basic idea is to make it very easy for you, very convenient for you, and create an expectation that this is a norm,” says Dr. Kevin Masters, a professor at CU Denver. “And this is what’s usually done."   Dr. Masters says the psychology behind the process is to cause stress for customers, which makes them tip no matter how much they decide.   "These ones where you are at a coffee shop or taxi places like that, you're given this automatic tip, especially if there is a line behind you there is a pressure," he says.   If you think you're the only one who feels awkward in this situation, you're not alone. Nathan, who works as a barista, says the feeling is mutual. But he does believe he gets tipped more with automatic tipping screens.    Dr. Master's says whether or not you tip, it's all psychological with the pressure you feel."Most of us, I think, would rather just get it over with,” he says. “So, if it costs me a few more cents on this cup of coffee, [no] big deal."    1427

You will soon be able to freeze your credit report for free, a step that can help protect you from identity theft. Many called on Congress to make freezes free after the massive Equifax breach last year that exposed the personal information of more than 146 million Americans to hackers. The provision was included in a broader bill passed by the House on Tuesday, which rolled back regulations on banks created by Dodd-Frank. The bill now heads to President Donald Trump's desk. When you place a freeze on your credit report, it prohibits the credit rating company from disclosing your personal information, effectively preventing anyone from opening a credit card or loan in your name. You'd need to lift the freeze if you want to open a line of credit yourself.A freeze goes a step further than a credit monitoring or fraud alert service. Those generally notify you of suspicious activity after it happens. But under current state laws, there is often a fee to place and lift a credit freeze Most security freezes cost between and , though several states have already made them free.Plus, you'd need to place a freeze on credit reports at all three credit rating agencies — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — and pay a fee at each of them. The new legislation will make placing, lifting, and permanently removing freezes free no matter where you live. It also requires consumer rating companies to fulfill your request within one business day if made online or over the phone, and within three business days if requested by mail. The changes will take effect about four months after the bill is signed. To set up your own credit freezes, go to the freeze page at each credit agency's website individually: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You will be given a PIN that you'll need to lift or remove the freeze in the future.Often there is no charge for victims of identity fraud to add or lift a security freeze. After the data breach, Equifax made freezes free for everyone until June 2018. 2058

due to engine failure on Monday. The plane made a safe emergency landing in Raleigh, North Carolina about an hour into the flight from Atlanta to Baltimore."The Captain came on the loudspeaker and said that we had lost an engine and that they were making preparations to have an emergency landing," passenger Jose Bahamonde-Gonzalez said.Avery Porch was sitting next to her boyfriend Tyler Kreuger in the emergency seat."After we heard the boom we just saw all this smoke come up into the cabin, and that's when we really started freaking out," Porch said. "It started slowing down a bit the air cut off."People were frantic--preparing to open the door at a moment's notice to try and escape."I was about to the first person to jump off and I was like, 'oh my gosh,'" Porch said. "This is a 30-something pound door. I'm going to have to throw it in the seat and jump off and actually help people out."Panicked people started to fear the worst."I pulled out my phone, and I know I didn't have service," Kreuger said. "I just texted my mom 'I love you', I texted my dad 'I love you.'""I had a weird, eerie sense of calm over me, like I almost knew that they were going to take care of it, and they did," Porch said. "I don't think I'd be timid getting on a plane again being reassured that they handled it the way they did."Delta released a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and passengers said they were given a food voucher while they waited to leave Raleigh."Delta needs to retire those MD-80's, they are too old," said Bahamonde-Gonzalez.The flight was originally supposed to land in Baltimore around 2 p.m. local time, but the passenger didn't reach their destination until around 8:30 p.m.This story was originally published by Eddie Kadhim on 1763
