Early eSports tournaments focused on niche games and attracted mainly hard-core gamers as spectators, but that didn't stop spectators from turning out in droves. eSports has sold out arenas in China, Japan and even in the US as spectators watched the best of the best play games like World of Warcraft, League of Legends and Overwatch.But in the past few years, eSports has been going mainstream.In 2018, the NBA launched the NBA 2K League — a season-long competition featuring gamers playing an NBA video game for teams affiliated with actual NBA franchises. In addition, more than 60 colleges and universities throughout the country have eSports teams, some of which offers scholarships to gamers.Where are people watching eSports?The popularity of eSports has exploded in recent years, thanks to the streaming service Twitch. The website allows gamers to live-stream their gaming sessions, and some of the top-ranked gamers play in front of millions of viewers who live stream from their homes.Swedish gamer PewDiePie has more than 72 million subscribers combined between his Twitch and YouTube channels —despite making controversial comments in past months.Another gamer, Ninja, regularly gains 50,000 viewers per stream. Reports indicate he makes 0,000 annually by playing games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.Sunday's mass shooting in Jacksonville was briefly streamed live on Twitch. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family of out-of-state vacationers was displaced after a dryer in the home they were renting caught fire.Firefighters were called to the home, located on the 1000 block of South Pacific Street, shortly after midnight Sunday.After arriving, firefighters discovered that a clothes dryer near a downstairs bedroom of the home was on fire.Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, but not before a woman in her 60s suffered smoke inhalation.Crews say seven adults and none children staying in the two-unit home were displaced by the fire.Firefighters from Camp Pendleton, Vista and Carlsbad assisted. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of expanding a clause that prevents the application of anti-discrimination laws from religious institutions.In a 7-2 decision, with liberal justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor dissenting, the court expanded the "ministerial exception," siding with a California Catholic school that did not renew the contracts of two teachers.In the case of Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrisey-Berru, the teachers claimed they were discriminated against because they were released from their contracts after they did not receive certification in a Catholic teaching course. The teacher later sued, saying she had been discriminated against because of her age.However, the citing precedent from the landmark 2014 Burwell v. (KGTV) - Whale watchers enjoyed a rare encounter off the Southern California coast Monday: four orcas teaming up to prey on dolphins. “It’s very, very rare,” said Oceanside Whale Watching manager Carla Mitroff. The company had a boat full of whale watchers off San Clemente when the orcas appeared. Boat Captain Shane and staff biologist Lauren Turley captured the moment. “They were thrilled beyond thrilled,” Mitroff said of the passengers. “It’s the holy grail of whale watching.” The Eastern Tropical Pacific orcas pass through Southern California after a stop in Mexico, Mitroff said. The whale watching team hasn’t seen orcas in more than a year. Monday, the orca pod preyed on two baby dolphins as the mother tried to fight the killer whales. It's not unusual for orcas to eat larger mammals.“The diet of orcas depends to some extent on what is available where they live,” according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. One ecotype of orcas in the Pacific Northwest eats fish, while other ecotypes eat marine mammals and squid. Killer whales are “considered a top predator, eating near the top of the food chain.” 1171
