ODESSA, Fla. — A couple from Florida that specializes in Christmas art worried many children wouldn't get to visit Santa this year, so they got creative to keep the tradition alive.Larry Hersberger always had a love for the man who makes a list and checks it twice."Christmas has always been special to me since I was a boy. I was raised in the prairies," said Hersberger.Hersberger's wife, Ela Bednarek, always adored a beautifully decorated Evergreen."I grew up in Poland, and in Poland, Christmas is the biggest holiday there is," said Bednarek.Together they are creating an empire of Christmas themed oil paintings."And it all stemmed to my own inner child and how he pictured Santa," said Hersberger.The big guy at the North Pole started to take notice."Next thing you know, I'm being friended by hundreds of Santas on Facebook," said Hersberger. "I realized that all of them had my work somewhere in their homes."When the pandemic began to threaten Santa's busy season, the couple started to worry."Because they make their entire year's income in the last three months of the year, and gone," said Hersberger.Then they started thinking about the kids."We have a 5-year-old and I was like, 'wait a minute, I can't take Juliet to see Santa this year,'" said Bednarek. "I said 'Larry, you're the Santa guy, you got to save Christmas.'"So with the help of their bearded friends, the couple put together a network of 100 professional Santas from five different countries and called it How To Save Christmas. PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Chris Nikic has officially set a new Guinness World Record. He’s the first athlete with Down syndrome to complete a full triathlon.Nikic finished Saturday’s 2.4-mile swim, 122-mile bike and 26.2-mile run in 16 hours, 46 minutes and nine seconds. He needed to complete the race in 17 hours to earn the title of Ironman.21-year-old Nikic, who lives in Maitland, Florida, says he didn’t let any obstacles come in his way despite being stung by fire ants and falling off his bicycle.“I decided to get back up and fight my way through,” he explained.Dan Grieb, Chris’ coach, was there by his side throughout the entire race. “He woke up as a boy with Down syndrome and went to bed an Ironman,” Dan explained Monday morning while packing up his bags to leave Panama City Beach.Grieb recalled a conversation he had with Nik Nikic, Chris’ dad, moments before the race. “I told his dad ‘Nik, you’ve done an amazing job with your boy for 21 years. Just give him to me for 17 hours and I promise I’ll return to you an Ironman. HONG KONG – Hong Kong authorities on Wednesday withdrew an unpopular extradition bill that sparked months of chaotic protests that have since morphed into a campaign for greater democratic change. "As a result of the divided views of the public regarding the (extradition) bill, there have been conflicts in the society," Secretary for Security John Lee told the city's legislature. Lee said the administration decided to suspend the amendment exercise after studying the matter. “For this purpose I wrote to the president of Legco (Legislative Council) to withdraw the notice to resume the second reading of the bill,” Lee said. “And as a result, the Legislative Council meeting stopped handling the bill. Thereafter, the administration stated many times that the revision has come to a halt. DENVER, Colorado — Cloud seeding can provide between 5% and 15% more snow to help ski areas, farmers and watersheds in the state, supporters say. "These observations show us that cloud seeding does work," said University of Colorado researcher Katja Friedrich, who has studied cloud seeding inside and outside of a laboratory. She worked with scientists who flew planes near moisture-rich clouds and injected them with silver iodide, a substance that causes moisture to become heavy and fall to the ground as snow. On a radar image, she pointed outlines of snow that later formed. The visible lines matched the pattern the cloud seeding plane had flown in the sky. Cloud seeding in Colorado aims to produce more snow, not rain. Friedrich said it's difficult to quantify how much additional snow is created. Cloud seeding doesn't make more clouds, but supporters believe it gets more snow out of an approaching storm. Planes can be used to seed approaching storm clouds. Ground seeders use propane to heat the air and also used in the mountains and Western Slope. Silver iodide is then added to the warmed air as it rises. The moisture, already in the clouds, bonds to the silver iodide. When it becomes heavy, it falls to the ground as snow. Cloud seeding has been happening for about 70 years in Colorado but is slowed in years when there is heavy snowfall. Cloud seeders operated during the 2018-2019 winter but slowed in places where significant snowpack accumulated. A man who owns a cloud seeding company on the Western Slope said the technology works well. Cloud seeder's viewpoint Cloud seeders dot highpoints in Colorado from the west to central part of the state. Ski areas hire Eric Hjermstad's Western Weather Consultants company to cloud seed early in the season, so there's more natural snow before opening day. He continues seeding until mid-April.
