LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Scientists at Stemson Therapeutics say they've found a way to create new hair cells that could become a cure for baldness."We're hoping this will be the breakthrough," says Chief Scientific Officer Alexey Terskikh.For a few years, they've been working on a two-part process that turns stem cells into hair follicles. It then implants the follicle cells into the scalp to grow new hair."We have the capability to generate brand new hair follicles," says Stemson CEO Geoff Hamilton.Using iPSC's, stem cells derived from a person's blood or existing cells, Terskikh's team can direct them to become folliculogenic cells, the building blocks of hair.They then put the cells into a microscopic scaffold-like mold made on a 3D printer. That will help avoid in-grown hair or hair that grows in unnatural ways."Imagine transplanting thousands, or tens of thousands of those into a scalp," says Hamilton.Their technique is different from current hair restoration therapy because it grows new hair cells. Existing methods like Rogaine or Propecia try to revive dead cells or transplant existing cells from one area of the body to another."We're inventing as we go," says Hamilton. "We're making up the path ahead of us as we go."Eventually, they say the cost of the new cells will be similar to the cost of hair transplant surgery now, which can run upwards of ,000.In addition to being a cosmetic solution for people who have gone bald naturally, Hamilton says this could help people who have lost hair due to chemotherapy treatment or from severe burns or injuries.So far, testing has proven successful in mice. (KGTV) -- Local cannabis shops are sounding the alarm, saying higher state tax rates set to take effect next year will drive more customers to the black market.Starting January 1, the state will change the way it calculates the excise tax on all marijuana products, effectively raising the rate by 12.5 percent. (KGTV) – Leslie Furcron, the woman who was shot in the face with a bean bag round during a May 30 protest outside of La Mesa police headquarters, addressed the media Wednesday.The 59-year-old Furcron and her attorney, Dante Pride, are slated to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. in La Mesa."I'm a law-abiding citizen," said Furcron in her brief statement to reporters. "I never came out here that night [La Mesa protests] for this to be a part of my story."Furcron was released from the hospital on Tuesday after having been placed in a medically induced coma with a breathing tube.She was initially hospitalized after a La Mesa officer fired a bean bag round into a crowd of protesters. Furcron was struck in the forehead.Her attorney described the bean bag as a canvas sack filled with buckshot, or lead pellets.It's unclear at what range Furcron was struck but her attorney said,"she was too close for them to use that round if it sticks in your forehead."Furcron was among the thousands of people in front of the police department, where a demonstration against police violence started peacefully later turned to chaos and officers began to deploy tear gas and bean bag rounds.LMPD Chief Walt Vaquez said last week that the incident was under investigation and the officer involved had been identified. Vasquez issued the following statement Wednesday:"I am sincerely thankful that Ms. Furcron has been released from the hospital and is able to now heal at home with her family. I pray that she has a speedy and full recovery. Less than a year after the Boy Scouts of America decided to invite girls to join, the organization announced that it will refer to its older youth program as "Scouts BSA" starting in February 2019.The name change comes amid a new campaign slogan, "Scout Me In," that was made to emphasize the group's expansion from just boys to boys and girls."Cub Scouts is a lot of fun, and now it's available to all kids," Stephen Medlicott, National Marketing Group Director of Boy Scouts of America, said in a statement. "That's why we love 'Scout Me In' -- because it speaks to girls and boys and tells them, 'This is for you. We want you to join!'"The name change only applies to the program currently called Boy Scouts, which is available for teens ages 11-17. The Cub Scouts program, for children ages 5-10, will not undergo a name change. The name of the organization will remain Boy Scouts of America.The decision to open the scouting program to girls last October was both a reflection of growing progressive attitudes as well as a business decision. The Boy Scouts of America has seen declining numbers for years. "It's when you're not wearing them, they kind of just hanging down so they're not in the way. But they're also functional when you need them."As he sells his MaskerAIDS, Jonah says all the proceeds benefit Jewish Family Services."At the start of the pandemic, you could just see lines of people trying to get food, just waiting for food to be put in their cars," he said.Jonah, who volunteers at Jewish Family Services, says he wanted to help families in need who are food insecure and going through a difficult time."Jonah is just such a great example of one person making a huge impact," JFS older adult services director, Laura Gilman said.From produce to toiletries and protein, Gilman said she's seen the need grow."We at least doubled during COVID. We're serving over 500 families a month," she said. "And then by the end of this year, we're going to serve about, between October, November, December, about 1,500 households, so that's not individuals, that's households."The MaskerAID proceeds go towards the Kesher KC Bags, which Jonah also helped bring to Kansas City."Someone we know in Minnesota, it was at their synagogue, and I kind of told JFS about it, and they used the idea and went with it," Jonah said. "They are bags that have essentials of, like, heat up meals and food and then they also have some resources.""These bags are a really awesome way for us to create a stopgap for people," Gilman said. "We operate by appointment only because we are a choice and voice pantry."Jonah's goal was to raise ,800 for JFS, but he underestimated himself and his work."It's been amazing," he said. "We've raised ,600 dollars and still climbing for JFS."Thousands of dollars have been raised to help serve families he may never meet."Even though I might not meet them, I know it kind of either brings a smile to their face and it fills their stomach," Jonah said.
