Dating during the pandemic has been tough for many people, with virus concerns and quarantining. Some dating apps have reported an increase in users, with experts saying the apps are not just being used to form romantic connections."COVID has been terrible for the world but as far as the dating industry, it’s been great because people still want to have that connection with other people," said Jonathan Kirkland, Director of Brand Marketing for BLK, Match Group's largest dating app for Black singles with more than 4 million downloads nationwide.Kirkland says the pandemic has boosted their app's usage, with many people still yearning for that human connection. Specifically, Kirkland says, the Black Lives Matter movement has also made their role especially important in the black community."We took it a step further and we’re actually using the app to find different ways to engage with our audience. So, whether that's around timely social issues, political issues, things affecting the community specifically, we create those engaging experiences for people to still sound off in, have those broader conversations. So, it's not just a one-to-one connection but a one-to-many connection and using the platform to really amplify those voices," said Kirkland.University of Denver psychologist Dr. Howard Markman says dating apps have the potential to play a bigger, more positive role in single people's mental health during the pandemic. Dr. Howard is conducting a study that, so far, shows many people aren't using dating apps for romance."They're sometimes connecting with people, very rarely meeting people, very rarely forming a relationship, and I feel, and we feel, my class feels, and other classes, that people can be using dating apps as a way of connecting," said Dr. Markman.Dr. Markman says virtual friendships are crucial right now. "They can use it to find a friend that they could have a romantic relationship with in the future but they can actually get to know the person first. We call that the counter hook-up culture," said Dr. Markman."As we look to 2021, I think the trend that you’ll see a lot is more of these dating apps going beyond just the core of dating," said Kirkland.In fact, BLK says it is continuing to introduce new features and engagement opportunities on their app to keep people connected on social issues important to them. DENVER, Colo. — A toddler, child, and three adults died in a house fire in Denver where arson and homicide are suspected, according to initial reports from the Denver Fire Department and Denver Police Department.Around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, a Denver police officer called the fire department to report smoke along the 5300 block of N. Truckee Street, said Capt. Greg Pixely with the Denver Fire Department. This call was followed shortly afterward with several residents calling 911 about a fire in the neighborhood, which is near the southeast corner of Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.Pixley said police arrived to the home, located at 5312 Truckee Drive, around 2:55 a.m. and made a valiant effort to try to help the people still inside from the "very significant fire."He said the officer who attempted to rescue people from the home was pushed back due to the heat from the fire.Pixley said according to initial reports, a toddler, child and three adults died in the fire and all five were found on the lower part of the home. Three people who had been on the second story of the building were able to evacuate on their own. Pixley said firefighters reported that the individuals jumped from the second story. Their injuries are unknown.DPD Division Chief Joe Montoya said evidence indicates this was an arson, so police will investigate the case along with the fire department. Montoya said he's unable to discuss details about the evidence as of Wednesday morning.Montoya said he believes there was one person who was near the front of the home whom police were able to retrieve but it was too late.Pixley said firefighters worked to reduce the threat of the fire spreading to the two neighboring houses. When she was a baby, she was adopted.“You feel kind of alone,” Silvas said.She only knows a few things about her biological mother; she was 15 years old when she had Katherin, and she is from Kentucky."I even went to the extent of giving my biological mother a name. I called her Cindy,” Silvas said.She started searching and reached out to the adoption agency but they didn't have any information they could give her. That’s when she head about an option using DNA testing."This thing on adopted.com that myheritage.com and quest were offering like x amount in promo DNA test for adopted or adopted related families," Silvas said.She thought trying to track down her biological family using DNA might be the answer."I know how hard it is to feel alone and how hard it is to even make the decision to try and contact them," Silvas said.The process has only just begun. She's received a test kit from MyHeritage. The company will then look for any DNA connections it may have in its system."I have to tell you so far we've already had thousands of people apply. You know when you say compelling, I mean heartbreaking," said Rafi Mendelsohn with MyHeritage. "We've seen and almost been surprised actually how for adoptees it's incredibly powerful and the technology is. It can be incredibly powerful for those searching for their biological family, so we're going to be sending out 15,000 kits."DNA can connect people to anyone else who has already taken the test."Everyone receives matches. Whether you receive matches to your parents or siblings, it depends who's taking the test. Even if you don't as an adoptee get a match with the parent or the sibling you're looking for, we've seen so many cases where people have had a match with an uncle or even a second or third fourth cousin and it's through that match that they're able to close the loop," Mendelsohn said.One of the biggest concerns is privacy, people who've given up a baby for adoption who did so with an understanding that it would be completely private, not knowing that DNA technology years later could ignore that."For someone who may have over a long period of time built up expectations for whatever reunion would look like they would be very disappointed if it didn't go the way that they had hoped," said Ryan Hanlon with the National Council for Adoption. He thinks it can be problematic; some people don't want to be found and when people go looking it can end in heartache."For those instances where an individual doesn't want to be found or doesn't want to be connected to it can be disconcerting for them," Hanlon said.But others point to the examples of good outcomes times when people are able to reunite.That's why Silvas is looking forward to the possibility of finding her biological family even if there's a risk she will be disappointed."It's a need to feel connected with anyone else on this globe besides my daughter," she said. 3034
