KIEV, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine's coal industry ministry and China's state development bank reached an agreement on cooperation in the coal industry Thursday."We have signed a document which provides an algorithm for further implementation of investment projects," Yuriy Yaschenko, the Ukrainian coal industry minister, told reporters after a meeting with Gao Jian, deputy head of the State Development Bank of China.The memorandum applies to three investment projects to be launched in the Lugansk and Donetsk regions in eastern Ukraine, Yaschenko said."Chinese experts have already arrived in Ukraine, they are now visiting the shafts. They will inspect the technical condition and consider how to implement these projects," Yaschenko said.Gao said China's State Development Bank is willing to expand cooperation with Ukraine not only in the coal industry but also in agriculture, infrastructure construction and other fields.Ukraine's coal industry and China's State Development Bank signed a framework agreement on financial cooperation on Sept. 2 during Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's visit to China.Under the agreement, Ukraine's coal ministry presented to the Chinese side a package of seven investment projects with an estimated cost of more than one billion U.S. dollars.

HEFEI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's top 500 enterprises reported smaller revenue gaps with their U.S. counterparts, while outperforming their worldwide competitors in profitability amid the nation's rapid economic recovery, an industrial ranking report showed Saturday.China's top 500 enterprises chalked up 4.05 trillion U.S. dollars in operating revenues last year, equivalent to about 18 percent of the operating revenue total created by the world's top 500 companies in the same year, and the ratio was 2.62 percentage points lower than the figure recorded for the year earlier, according to a report released Saturday in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, by the China Enterprise Confederation (CEC) and China Enterprise Directors Association.The average profit margin of China's top 500 enterprises was 5.44 percent in 2009, compared with 4.16 percent for the world's top 500 companies.Further, the net profits of the Chinese heavyweights grew by more than 20 percent last year, faster than the 17 percent for the world's top 500. It was the second consecutive year that Chinese enterprises outshone theirforeign counterparts in annual profits.Miao Rong, researcher with CEC, said despite the progress, China's top 500 enterprises obviously suffered from the impact of the global financial crisis as they reported slower growth in new employment and business revenues.However, unlike the world's top 500 companies, most of which are service and high tech giants, a lion's share of China's top 500 businesses are traditional industrial enterprises in the fields of energy development, telecommunications and power generation, Miao noted."It is a tough job, in the short-term, to make Chinese corporations catch up with their foreign counterparts in terms of 'soft power' , such as the capability of resource integration, management expertise, brand building and intellectual property protection," he added.Sinopec, Asia's leading refinery, topped the top 500 revenue list for the fifth consecutive year with 1.39 trillion yuan (about 204.41 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009. SHANGHAI, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- An official of one of China's top government think tanks called on Saturday for the readjustment of the nation's breakneck expansion of the auto industry as an explosion of new cars on China's roads aggravates problems with pollution and congestion.Liu Shijin, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, told a forum that the government should shift its guidance to automakers from mere pursuit of output capacity to environment-friendly and energy-saving targets.Also, auto manufacturers should strengthen their safety and quality control standards, he said.Sales of domestically-manufactured autos rose 36 percent year on year to reach 13.14 million units in the months through September, as lower-priced automobiles have become more affordable for better-off Chinese people, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on Oct. 12.In fact, annual sales and production could exceed 17 million, CAAM said.Although the expansion has brought an industrial boom to the country and boosted domestic demand, it has also triggered widespread concerns over the country's energy capacity, pollution levels and notorious traffic jams.In Beijing, the increasing number of private cars, along with heavy rainfall and a spurt in holiday travel, caused a record 140 traffic jams on a single Friday evening last month.
