SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The eight-legged population is overrunning parts of Balboa Park a bit earlier than usual this year.Spider season is in full bloom in San Diego. From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh. "And be prepared to wipe web off your face from time to time.” 1420

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The government is sweetening the deal for investors who put their money into San Diego's most under-served neighborhoods, but the offer could be having a negative effect on the people who live in them.A new study from Zillow says prices in so-called opportunity zones grew 20 percent in a year after they received the government designation. That designation, part of 2017 tax reform, offered investors capital gains tax breaks for investing in the areas, which the IRS deems "economically distressed."San Diego County has about 30 of these zones, most of them concentrated in the city of San Diego's inner core. Zillow says the Colina del Sol neighborhood near City Heights, parts of Golden Hill and University Heights are the areas that could see the most investment. RELATED: San Diego's top neighborhoods to get more rental space for the money"It's been expensive to live here, but it's expensive to live anywhere," said Tomi Barnett, who lives in Colina del Sol. "It's starting at ,200 or ,300 (a month) for a one-bedroom."The steep price increases have led to concerns that the opportunity zones could ultimately price people out of their own neighborhoods. Erik Tilkemeier, who does economic development for the City Heights Community Development Corporation, said his group is working with officials to make sure the investments also benefit the community.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: How housing got so expensive"Our sidewalks are deplorable in a number of neighborhoods, the walk-ability is not what it should be," he said. "The challenge is all of those same improvements tend to cause gentrification."Tilkemeier added that the government shut down earlier this year delayed getting answers to some key questions on the program. 1775

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The fight over short-term rentals in San Diego is about to get even worse. Less than a week after the city council added new regulations to those rentals, Airbnb, and two other companies are fighting back. Airbnb is teaming up with Share San Diego and HomeAway to collect signatures for a referendum to put the issue on the ballot for voters to decide. The group has 30 days to collect roughly 35,000 signatures and crews are already on the ground gathering signatures. The three companies have already donated 0,000 for these efforts. If all of the signatures are collected, the issue would go on the 2020 ballot. We reached out to the city for comment, but so far haven't heard back.  737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation is once again calling on San Diego County officials to do more to help curb the high numbers of COVID-19 among Latinos. On Wednesday, the organization released a statement regarding county numbers breaking down the number of contact tracing hires by ethnicity. Of the county's recent hires, 144 are Latino or Hispanic, that makes up 25.5% of the hires. Chicano Federation President and CEO Nancy Maldonado said county officials had told them they would hire people from within the community, that spoke Spanish, to serve as contact tracers. However, in Wednesday's statement, Maldonado said, "They lied." Maldonado has been an outspoken critic of the county and their response to how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Latinos. Data from the county shows there are roughly 34% of Latinos in the county, but they make up 61% of the positive cases. During Wednesday's county press conference, Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher each addressed the concerns. Fletcher said the county's goal is to have contact tracers who match not only the demographics of the population, but also the demographics of the positive cases. Fletcher added that they are doing outreach to get more applicants and also more Spanish speakers. Maldonado told 10News she is confident the county will get it done, but says she wants to see more action, instead of hearing about plans for what they are going to do. 1449
