SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating an alleged attack on three women in hijabs in Little Italy as a possible hate crime. The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. Sunday on Columbia Street near Beech.Three women in hijabs were walking under scaffolding when a man approached from the other direction. Despite one woman moving to give him room, witnesses say 50-year-old Kyle Allen lunged his shoulder into one of them. "Fists started flying, and it was his fists. He started swinging at the women, trying to hit the woman that he almost knocked down, but he ended up hitting one of the other women," said a witness named Amy, who called 911 during the altercation. A hijab is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women. Amy, who asked us not to use her last name, said she also saw Allen rip off one of the women's hijabs from her face. "As I got closer I heard him calling her names and telling them to go back to where they came from," Amy said. Cell phone video shot after the incident showed Allen, going back and forth with bystanders. He ultimately walked to his high rise apartment around the corner. Witnesses followed him and pointed police in his direction.A San Diego Police spokesman told 10News that Allen greeted officers at his unit with a handgun that had a silencer. He was arrested without incident on firearms, battery, and criminal threat charges. Calls and texts to Allen's phone were not immediately returned. Two police officers were staged on his floor inside his building, but he was not there. Allen is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 21. 1583

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Lifeguards say beach attendance was much larger compared to a typical weekend, but drastically smaller than the usual Independence Day crowds. Still, lifeguards conducted hundreds of rescues along San Diego's coastline.America's big beach birthday bash was not as jam-packed this year."We didn't know what to expect," San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said. "We thought maybe with LA beaches and Orange county beaches closed, we'd see an influx, but we didn't really."Lt. Lerum says only about 200,000 to 300,000 people came to San Diego beaches this July 4th weekend, compared to over 1,000,000 visitors in years past."Obviously, with the fireworks being canceled, people didn't camp out all day waiting for them," Lt. Lerum said. "So parking lots were full; however, the beaches and parks were not at full capacity."This meant leftover trash was not nearly as bad either. Volunteers of the local Surfrider Foundation spent a fraction of their usual time picking up Sunday morning. Those who did come to the beaches could not wait to dip their feet in the sand."For three months, we are in quarantine, and so it was so hard for me!" Fay Beygi said.Only a few people were seen wearing masks, as many visitors stuck together with their families, or were in the water. While some were hoping for more enforcement, lifeguards shifted their focus on the dangerous high surf. On July 4, 2020, they conducted about 300 rescues — 197 of them were at the La Jolla Windandsea. That number includes responding to swimmers in distress, stingray patients, and boating emergencies. While that is a lot for a typical day, lifeguards say that it is less than half of the usual July 4 numbers. Still, they say Windandsea is a popular place where even experienced surfers and swimmers can get washed away."Avoid rip currents when you can," Lt. Lerum said. "If you get stuck in a rip current, try not to panic. Swim parallel to the shore and go back to shore. And please, supervise your young children. Watch them very carefully."A high surf advisory is in effect this weekend until 12 p.m. on Monday, bringing rip currents and generally hazardous conditions for swimmers. The high surf also could bring some minor flooding to low-lying areas during high tide, including in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Cardiff, according to the National Weather Service. 2377

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Humane Society has placed 140 rats up for adoption after they were given up by a woman in Del Mar this week. The rats have undergone veterinary exams and tests and are "happy and ready" for adoption, the Humane Society says. Because rats are social animals, the society is only adopting them out in same-gender pairs unless the owner already has a rat.The rodents were given to SDHS after a woman's pet rats multiplied out of control while she was living out of her vehicle in Del Mar. The population eventually grew to more than 300 pet rats. The rats chewed through the vehicle's wiring, rendering it inoperable.RELATED: Del Mar neighbors aid woman living in car with 300 pet ratsNeighbors have since rallied around the woman, helping her tow her old vehicle, get a new car, and turn over the rats to SDHS. Many of the rats were pregnant females and are currently in foster care through the Humane Society. The 140 rats available now are males and non-pregnant females, according to SDHS."Although rats are not as common as other small rodents, they make great pets," SDHS said. "They are very social, smart and love to interact with humans ... They are very popular as classroom pets, because they like to interact with people."Rats eat pellets, veggies, and fruit and stay clean by grooming themselves, much like a cat, several times a day.If anyone is interested in adoption, the animals are available at Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego Humane Society locations for a pair.SDHS also recommends any pet owners in need of help contact them at 619-299-7012. 1601

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans will soon have four new restaurants for dining along the San Diego Bay, as Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined Port of San Diego officials and The Brigantine Inc. for the ribbon cutting ceremony Monday for Portside Pier. Portside Pier is an over-the-water dining complex that has been years in the making. It will have four restaurants -- Brigantine on the Bay, Miguel's Cocina, Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Coffee & Gelato. The dining complex replaced Anthony's Fish Grotto, a staple for 52 years along the bay. The dining complex is now owned by The Brigantine Inc. The restaurants are opening amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The design of the restaurants have plenty of outdoor space to seat about 500 people, with all social distancing guidelines in place. The complex has capacity for about 1,000 people, once pandemic restrictions are lifted. Portside Pier is the first of several projects along the waterfront, to improve and update the embarcadero. The coffee and gelato bar are already open. The other restaurants officially open on July 28. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating after a man died in custody after reportedly breaking down a fence and walking into someone’s home Tuesday afternoon. Police were called to the 2900 block of Hornet Way around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon after receiving a call from someone saying a man, later identified as Buddie Thomas Nichols, 40, had entered his home through a rear door. According to police, the man broke down a fence and walked into the home through an open back door. Two of the residents were upstairs while their 9-year-old daughter was asleep downstairs, according to police. Police say one of the residents came downstairs when he heard commotion and confronted Nichols, punching him twice in the face and rendering him unconscious. Police say the suspect woke up and ran out of the house displaying bizarre behavior after the resident kicked him. Witnesses told police they believed the man was on drugs. When police arrived and tried to take the Nichols into custody, officers say he resisted, forcing them to use physical force to get him into handcuffs. After paramedics arrived, police say Nichols became unresponsive and later died after being taken to the hospital. 1215
