SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's a problem on the rise in communities across San Diego; drivers racing down side streets to avoid rush hour traffic. When Doug Doyen saw speeding on his street, he tried to stop it. "It was almost like the Indy 500 I couldn't believe the speed, the amount of traffic and speed up and down this street," said Doyen.He put up his own signs to get drivers to slow down. "Hold the sign out, wave at them, people would be like, 'what the? Oh okay."' said Doyen. "And they'd look at me like, 'who is this guy?'" But the speeding is still a problem. He thinks GPS apps are directing drivers to his side street to avoid freeway traffic. "I couldn't believe the traffic and the speeds I was seeing out here," he said. Neighbors joined San Diego Police to form a Pace Car Program. The citizen-based campaign adds more signs and traffic patrols in the neighborhood. 937
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside the 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children's Hospital, the hearts, bones, skulls, and spines of patients are brought to life in a new way.Justin Ryan, Ph.D. is director of the lab. Using 3D printers, they can replicate a patient's anatomy down to every precise detail, giving doctors critical information before surgery.“The concept is by giving our doctors more information they can perform a better procedure; they can even perform it with less time. So that means less time under bypass, less time under anesthesia, which is great for the patients themselves," said Ryan.For example, if a patient is a candidate for a stent or valve, doctors could use the 3D model to try different sizes before entering the operating room. “We give them more information to plan a better procedure," said Ryan. While some of the models take several hours, many can be created within the day. “There isn’t an average day, I might have a cardiac case in the morning, an ortho case in the evening, I'll have a doctor have an idea for a medical device that they wanted to design or develop, and that all happens here," said Ryan. Ryan says the 3D models are also useful when explaining the procedure to families. The technology is currently being funded by grants and donations, at no extra cost to families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In recent weeks colorful bikes have filled the streets of San Diego. Dockless bike ridesharing companies were ready to go once the City Attorney's Office said they could operate. The city says LimeBike, Ofo, Mobike and Bird Scooter all have the proper licenses to operate here.LimeBike says in just two weeks they've logged 30,000 rides.The San Diego Bike Coalition supports the companies and believes the accessibility and affordability will help the city in its climate action plan. However, some residents have major concerns with the bikes, reporting that they're being left in the middle of sidewalks and on people's property. They've also witnessed scooter riders not wearing a helmet and people riding where they're not supposed to.Zack Bartlett, the general manager for LimeBike in San Diego, says they have an operations team patrolling the city 24/7 to run safety checks and reposition bikes improperly parked. He says they've invested heavily in education, safety and parking campaigns to help everyone enjoy the bikes and scooters responsibly.One of the safety videos can be viewed here.San Diego Police say because the dockless bikes and scooters are so new they don't have a way to track citations issued to individuals riding them or parking them improperly. 1316
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the largest loss of life in United States Navy history and you can read an award-winning account of it by two San Diego authors. ‘Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man’ is being released as a paperback after the hardcover became a New York Times bestseller. Sara Vladic and Lynn Vincent wrote the book together after researching it for more than 17 years. “It’s so much more than a sinking story and a shark story,” said author Lynn Vincent. Vladic spent nearly two decades interviewing survivors from the sinking USS Indianapolis. “Getting to know these men and their story and heroism and what it took to survive those days is incredible,” added Vladic, “it still teaches us lessons today of what the cost of freedom really is and what we should be remembering.” The book is cinematically written and presents multiple accounts from the men that had to fend off sharks and each other for several days at sea after the heavy cruiser was sank by the Japanese during WWII. The authors say they are in talks with several streaming services to make a miniseries based on the book. 1202
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been 25 years since President Bill Clinton approved Operation Gatekeeper, the measure focused on the issue of immigrants crossing the border illegally — specifically the San Diego sector.Two key parts of Operation Gatekeeper were surveillance equipment and enforcement infrastructure, like walls and fences. Twenty-five years later, Border Patrol Agent Theron Francisco tells 10News, "Before Gatekeeper this area was in utter chaos, agents were apprehending 1,000 per shift. We had hundred of thousands of apprehensions a year." It's a measure that Francisco says paved the way for Border Patrol today."It's absolutely night and day from where we were back then," Francisco said.Tuesday, those against Operation Gatekeeper held a rally. Former Border Patrol agent Jenn Budd tells 10News, "That was the whole purpose, to push them out here to make it more difficult and dangerous for them to cross. I didn't want to be a part of it but its something I have to admit I was a part of."Budd tells 10News, it's partly why she left Border Patrol, "I left because I felt the policies we were enacting were killing people and what we were representing to the public wasn't the truth." Meantime, Border Patrol agents say it's only helped increase San Diego safety."The days are gone where illegal aliens are running through people's backyards trying to hide from Border Patrol," Francisco added. Budd says, "We need them to work for us, we need them to protect our borders we need them to keep drug smugglers out, but we don't need children dying in their custody and all sorts of things they're doing right now." 1637
