Two teenagers have been charged in connection with the death of a man found injured at the Great Frederick Fair in Maryland. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an assault Friday near the midway area of the fairgrounds and found the 59-year-old victim unconscious, a news release from the agency said. The man was flown to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for further treatment; he died Saturday, the release said. He was identified on Monday as John Marvin Weed, of Mount Airy, Maryland.Witnesses told investigators the man was the victim of an unprovoked attack, and two juvenile suspects were identified and located by deputies, the sheriff's office said.No weapons were used in the attack, the news release said. The teens, a 15-year-old male and a 16-year old male, are in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Services awaiting a hearing. They have both been charged, with the 15-year-old facing charges of reckless endangerment and first- and second-degree assault. The 16-year-old was charged with one count of second-degree assault, the news release said. The sheriff's office said it is working with prosecutors on possible additional charges. The victim's body has been sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy and the sheriff's office is consulting with the state attorney's office to determine whether the teens will face additional charges, the sheriff's office said.Neither the teens nor the victim have been publicly identified. 1519

United States Secret Service director Randolph "Tex" Alles is being removed from his position, multiple administration officials said.President Donald Trump instructed his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to fire Alles. Alles remains in his position as of now but has been asked to leave.</p>The Secret Service director reports directly to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen, who resigned on Sunday amid growing pressure from the President. The director oversees the Secret Service's work on both protection and investigations."There is a near-systematic purge happening at the nation's second-largest national security agency," this official says.United States Citizenship and Immigration Services director Francis Cissna and Office of the General Counsel's John Mitnick are expected to be gone soon, and the White House is eyeing others to be removed. The President in recent weeks empowered Stephen Miller to lead the administration's border policies "and he's executing his plan" with what amounts to a wholesale decapitation or the Department of Homeland Security leadership, the official says.Neither the USSS nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment.Alles 1228

Vice President Mike Pence canceled a previously scheduled event in New Hampshire on Tuesday to return to the White House, two White House officials told CNN, though the reason for scrapping the event was not immediately clear. The vice president's spokeswoman said Pence never left the Washington area and that the event will be rescheduled."Something came up that required the @VP to remain in Washington, DC. It's no cause for alarm. He looks forward to rescheduling the trip to New Hampshire very soon," Alyssa Farah wrote in a tweet. An official close to the vice president told CNN that there was no emergency, saying, "the VP was called back to the White House but no cause for alarm."Pence was scheduled to travel to Manchester, New Hampshire, to participate in a roundtable discussion with patients at the Granite Recovery Center headquarters and deliver remarks on the opioid crisis and illegal drug flow into the state. 939

Vittorio Caruso, the most recent American to die in the Dominican Republic, died from respiratory and heart failure after a long history of related-health problems, the country's Attorney General's office said, citing a preliminary autopsy report.Caruso had suffered from hypertension, heart disease and pulmonary disease for a long time, the office said.Caruso is the 10th known American to die in the Dominican Republic in the last year. Local and US authorities maintain that the deaths are not related. The US hasn't issued a travel warning specific to the deaths in the Dominican Republic, and a US official said Friday there hasn't been an unusual uptick in reported deaths there.Caruso, from New York, had been living in the Boca Chica community near Santo Domingo for several years, prosecutors said. His partner, Yomaira Ramirez de Jesus, told prosecutors that Caruso began to cough and feel shortness of breath on June 11. He went to the doctor, was treated and released.Almost a week later, Ramirez de Jesus says Caruso called her, complaining of respiratory distress and chest pain. She found him receiving medical attention at home, say prosecutors.Caruso was then transferred to a Santo Domingo hospital, where he suffered from cardiorespiratory arrest and died.Caruso had been battling hypertension for nine years, and had a long history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the attorney general's office said.New and previous heart attacks were detected by the autopsy, the office said. Caruso was a smoker and drank alcohol, per the autopsy results. The body exhibited no signs of internal or external trauma, according to prosecutors. The FBI has a team in the Dominican Republic assisting with the toxicology tests of three of the 10 known American deaths. Some of those deaths could be related to alcohol. The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana, where two of the deaths occurred, said Sunday it would remove liquor dispensers from guest room minibars. 1997

Two Chicago police officers were killed Monday after being struck by a metro train, authorities said.Conrad Gary and Eduardo Marmolejo were responding to a shots fired call on the city's South Side when a passing train hit them, Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters. The officers were searching an area near train tracks at 103rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue when they were struck, Johnson said. The train had been traveling at 60 mph to 70 mph, he said."While doing the most dangerous thing any police officer can do, and that is to chase an individual with a gun, these brave young men were consumed with identifying a potential threat to their community and put the safety of others above their own," Johnson said.A suspect was ultimately taken into custody and a gun was recovered, Johnson said.Gary, 31, had been on the force 18 months. Marmolejo, 37, joined the department 2 1/2 years ago, Johnson said. The men, both fathers, lost their lives just a week before Christmas."This holiday will never be the same for those two families," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. "And while our hearts are with them, we lost people who answered the call to make Chicago a better place. We go about our lives not thinking twice and we can do that because of the men and women in the Chicago police department."Johnson asked Chicago to pray for the families of the officers, and for the men and women of the officers' 5th district, "who, even tonight, would stop at nothing to safeguard their community," he said."This has been an immensely difficult year for the Chicago police department," Johnson said, "And especially for the men and women of the 5th district where they have faced tragedy after tragedy this year." 1746
