If you like seeing the night sky light up like a Christmas tree, head outside this week to catch a glimpse at the Perseid meteor shower. It's considered the Northern Hemisphere's most popular meteor shower of the year. This year, it's been active since July, but it's set to peak this Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.NASA says the Perseids are best seen between about 2 a.m. and dawn.If you can't get out to have a look then, you may still be able to catch a glimpse of Perseid meteors the following two nights.Perseid meteors are caused by dust and debris left behind from the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle. 620

In a fleeting moment, life can change dramatically. Two summers ago, Fred Quin was celebrating the 4th of July at his family’s lake cottage near Grand Rapids, Michigan. They loaded up the boat and headed to the sand bar.“I decided to go off the front of the boat, and that’s when it gets fuzzy,” Quin siad.Quin's girlfriend, Meghan Anderson, noticed Fred was acting strangely. She walked over to him and grabbed his shoulder.  He didn’t move. The group grabbed a raft, put it under Fred, called 911 and floated him to shore.  They were met by an ambulance.Within four hours, Fred was in surgery.  He'd shattered his C-6 vertebrae, causing his body to become motionless. "The surgery was to remove those pieces, put a donor bone in, put a plate in the front side, and on the back side put two rods going down my spine. And they fused my C-5 to C-7 vertebras," Quin said. The trauma doctor told Fred he would never walk again, and he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.“It was devastating,” Anderson said.Quin wasn't giving up on his hope to walk someday, so he spent every day in therapy. With Anderson always by his side and after months of rehab, there was a sign of progress. Eventually, he began to regain feeling in his leg.“My first moment was my big toe on my left foot,” Quin said.Quin moved back home and started intense workouts at Detroit Medical Center's Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).“Fred’s determination is what makes you make it enjoyable to come to work,” RIM Physical Therapist Kyle Weishaupt said. They have been putting Fred in a wearable motorized machine that helps increase strength and endurance during workouts.“With the robot, the Exoskeleton, and me, we can get him up, and we can do over 1,000 steps in one session,” Weishaupt said.As the steps progressed, so did Quin and Anderson’s relationship. On their eight-year dating anniversary, they returned to the water for a pontoon ride, and Quin proposed.“The next goal is to walk down the aisle with Meghan with just with one crutch,” he said.On May 12, Meghan became Fred’s bride, and he accomplished his biggest goal.He walked down the aisle on his wedding day — fulfilling his dream and sharing his special day with family and friends. “Whether it’s exactly how we wanted it to happen or not, that’s not what matters. It's that we’re doing it together, and we’re happy," Meghan Quin said. After the honeymoon, the Quins plan on getting back to their life and setting new goals for their future. His next big challenge is to master walking in the grocery store.  2673

House Speaker Paul Ryan is not seeking re-election and will retire from Congress after this year, the Wisconsin Republican announced Wednesday."You realize something when you take this job," Ryan told reporters on Capitol Hill on Wednesday morning. "It's a big job with a lot riding on you ... but you also know this is not a job that does not last forever. ... You realize you hold the office for just a small part of our history. So you better make the most of it."He reminded reporters that he took the job "reluctantly" in 2015, when he took over from John Boehner, but Ryan also said he has no "regrets.""I like to think I've done my part," he said.Ryan's departure is a blow to GOP members who saw the Wisconsin Republican as a stable and policy-oriented leader in a party shaken by the tumultuous Donald Trump presidency. He has been a fundraising juggernaut ahead of the midterms this fall, and helped translate GOP agenda items into legislation such as a series of tax cuts and rolling back banking legislation put in place under Democrats. In his prepared remarks, Ryan focused on the tax law that passed last year as a key legacy he left behind and spoke at length about his desire to go home to Wisconsin to be home with his family. He said that the 2018 midterms and the chance that he wouldn't be speaker didn't factor at all into his decision to announce his retirement."None whatsoever actually," Ryan said.Trump, who has at times fought with congressional Republican including Ryan, tweeted praise for the speaker after his announcement."Speaker Paul Ryan is a truly good man, and while he will not be seeking re-election, he will leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question. We are with you Paul!" Trump wrote. 1746

If you’re shopping for a car, you may already know that buying used is a smart move that greatly expands your choices. The key is knowing where to look for them.Buying a used car will not only save you money but also allow you to shop higher-end brands, says Ivan Drury, Edmunds.com’s senior manager of insights. For example, maybe you wanted a new Toyota Camry. Instead, he says, you can save about ,000 and get a 3-year-old Lexus.Because of the bankruptcy of Hertz rental car agency, along with the many cars coming off lease, there are a lot of used vehicles to choose from, says Jeff Huang, who attends auctions as the remarketing sales supervisor at Westlake Financial Services. “A good used car is a real value proposition — and there are definitely deals to be had,” Huang says.Shoppers looking for great bargains will find them in cars older than 7 years, says Mark Holthoff, used car editor at Klipnik, a website for used car enthusiasts. “That’s because the depreciation curve has mostly been flattened,” he says. For example, a 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, costing ,000 new, now sells for about ,000.Shop in the right placeNew cars are sold only by franchised dealers, but used cars can be purchased from a variety of sellers:Used car departments at new-car dealerships.Used car superstores such as CarMax.Online used car sellers such as Carvana, Shift and Vroom.Car rental sales lots.Independent used car lots.Private parties.Public auctions. You’ll typically find the newest and more expensive models at new-car dealers’ used-car lots, the only place to turn if you want a certified car with a warranty and factory financing. Prices are likely to be higher than other lots’ but negotiable.National used-car chains such as CarMax, online retailers and rental car agencies also offer newer cars, often with factory warranty remaining. You can also get a loan and buy extended warranties. Prices are typically no-haggle.Independent lots, private parties and public auctions typically deal in older or cheaper cars. The upside is that you may find a 20-year-old one-owner cream puff, cheap. It does happen. But most cars have had several previous owners, and a checkered past is not rare. Plus, you’ll have to arrange your own financing.Adjust your expectationsThere is a built-in risk-versus-reward element to used car shopping: The more you’re willing to spend, the less chance the car will need repairs and overdue maintenance. Here’s an overview of the three price levels of used cars:High-end used cars: If your budget is over, say, ,000, you might consider getting a certified pre-owned (CPO) car from a dealer. Shopping for a CPO car is easier because it’s pre-inspected and comes with an included warranty. While you’ll have to pay a premium, you’ll also be able to buy a car with more modern technology and safety features. Of course, you can always buy a non-CPO car and purchase an extended warranty.Midrange used cars: A sweet spot for used car buying is a 3-year-old vehicle coming off a lease. Many of these cars will sell for 40% of their original price and still retain a new-car feel, according to Drury. Another source of near-new bargain-priced vehicles is car rental lots. According to an iSeeCars analysis, Hertz vehicles are selling for an average of ,389 below market value.Older used cars: Many people are afraid that cars from 7 to 15 years old will require costly repairs. But Holthoff points out that new cars can effectively cost the owner ,000 a month in depreciation.“You might have to spend money on a repair, but depreciation is a constant,” he says.To offset repairs, set aside 0 a month so sudden mechanic bills won’t deplete your savings. It’s best to buy older cars from private-party sellers because you can get a better idea of the mechanical condition, Holthoff advises. A used car dealer will show you the vehicle history report, but a private party might have the service records and can answer many other questions.Look for unexpected valueThe used car market is vast and, if you can spot an outlier, you can save big money. Here are a few examples of how to find that diamond in the rough:Cars that haven’t been recently redesigned will sell for less. Check car sites such as Edmunds.com to find out when the last time major changes were made to a model. While there is a stigma to buying a used rental car, the vehicles are well-maintained and priced lower than buying from dealers, Drury says.If a car dealer’s vehicle history report shows you are looking at a former rental car, leave and buy a similar one directly from the rental agency’s sales lot. You’re likely to find it cheaper.Be willing to travel to an area where the car you want is less popular. For example, all-wheel-drive vehicles sell for less in the southern U.S., where winter driving isn’t a factor.Be willing to travel to a more competitive market. A Honda dealer with a city to itself has less pressure to dicker on a CPO vehicle than a dealer in a city with three or four rivals.Used luxury cars often offer the biggest savings, according to Holthoff. The money you save on the purchase can be used if any repairs are needed.More From NerdWalletDon’t Fall for COVID-19 Student Loan Relief ScamsGet Your Finances Ready to Refi Student Loans5 Reasons It’s Smart to Lease a Car Right NowPhilip Reed is a writer at NerdWallet. In a pandemic that relies heavily on the expertise and passion of our healthcare workers, we have seen many doctors and nurses working longer hours and even risking their own health to care for those in need.“This is a pandemic that's going to continue to go on. And a lot of health care providers in different settings have already been asked to work overtime shifts or extra shifts. And the thing is, that’s just increasing the burnout,” said Dr. Jessica Rainbow, RN and UArizona College of Nursing assistant professor.“Before the pandemic burnout was already a normalized issue in Nursing. And what I mean by that is that more nurses than not experienced burnout than those who have what I would call good well-being and don't suffer from burnout,” said Chloe Littzen, RN and UArizona College of Nursing Ph.D. candidate.Rainbow and Littzen are seeking ways to mitigate nurse burnout during the coronavirus pandemic. They say the pandemic has only intensified the problem.“They either leave the setting that they're in. Let's say they're in one unit, they go to another unit. They leave that facility going from, let's say, the hospital setting to the community setting or vice versa, or they leave nursing completely,” said Littzen. That puts the industry in a tough spot. The nursing shortage also affects the ability to educate future nurses and the ability to do more research.“It's important to say that this is not an issue that is the nurse's fault right or any healthcare provider or anyone who works in a healthcare setting,” said Rainbow. From their research, they say health care workers are shown to have good self-care, but it’s the systems of the work environment that can be stressful.“Where they're actually given the resources that they need to be successful. So resources as far as things like PPE, things like having adequate staffing,” said Rainbow. They say a big factor is also the public. Loved ones of those in care can help by being understanding and by adhering to guidelines, such as wearing a mask.“You know, it's important to give grace and struggling times and everyone's emotions are heightened and stressed and you know nurses are people, too. They're also a human being and they're also suffering with you,” said Littzen. They found nurses have done things like meditation, spending more time in nature, and seeking peer groups to voice shared experiences.“Social support is huge for nurses. I mean, especially to when you were a provider and you have a job where your significant other at home may not fully understand what you do. And so it's difficult sometimes if you don't have the social support of other co-workers in the same position,” said Rainbow.Rainbow’s study is called “Working in Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Participants can access the consent form with study information online or contact her for more information. Littzen’s dissertation study is called “Young Adult Nurse Work-Related Well-being, Contemporary Practice Worldview, Resilience, and Co-Worker Support.”This story was first reported by Taja Davis at KGUN in Tucson, Arizona. 3106
