SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego firefighters came to the rescue of a Mountain View family after they lost their home to a fire the day after Christmas.The fire left seven people displaced after tearing through the home just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. The fire burned through one of two homes on the lot and the family says they had to pull bars off the window to escape the fire, leaving four people injured.While crews responded and were able to get the fire quickly under control, the family lost everything — including Christmas presents that two little girls who lived in the burned home had unwrapped just one day earlier.That's when San Diego Fire-Rescue stepped in. Sunday, firefighters from Stations 12 and 19 delivered gift cards, toys, and clothing to help the family through their loss. "The gifts were courtesy of the San Diego City Fire Fighters Local 145. The family was very appreciative of this wonderful surprise that illustrates the generous spirit of the holiday season," the department said on social media.The family has also started a GoFundMe to help with expenses due to the fire. 1149

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Restrictions in California due to the COVID-19 pandemic have forced many youth sports teams around San Diego County to head to other states to play games.Under current pandemic-related guidelines, youth sports teams in California have been limited to practices only. The restrictions have been frustrating for many parents and coaches.Anthony Lococo, a coach for San Diego travel baseball organization King Kong Baseball, said, "At this point, we thought we would be in a position where there would be a plan in place to get us back to playing. If I told you five or six months ago that we'd have to travel to play, I would have told you no way. I thought we would have had a plan in place by now."Rene Miramontes, director of coaching for local-based Crusaders Soccer, feels traveling to play in other states was bound to happen."In youth sports in particular, with no recourse, you have to start looking for options,” Miramontes said.Those options include heading east to places like Yuma, Arizona. In fact, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported about a recent baseball tournament in Yuma which featured 51 teams. Of those teams, 49 were from California."I gave it a couple months, with the plan that if we weren't open by October or November, we would have to look into going to other states," said Lococo.Since pandemic regulations went into effect in March, many youth tournaments in San Diego have been canceled, costing the city a lot of money. According to the U-T report, the amount of money lost could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.Now, San Diego families are heading to places like Arizona and Utah for tournaments, and of course, absorbing the costs that come with it.Lococo plans to take his King Kong Baseball teams to Arizona in the next month."As a family, you are renting a hotel for one to two nights, depending on how long the tournament is. Price-wise, you're probably talking five, six, seven hundred dollars per family,” said Lococo.Of course, the most important thing is the safety of the young athletes. Several departments and organizations gave presentations to a committee, lead by Councilmember Chris Ward.The Select Committee on Homelessness met to discuss how to create new employment opportunities for homeless and how to get them into the existing rapid-rehousing programs. They also discussed a new program that would house all homeless services in one location.The San Diego Police Department provided an overview of their new Neighborhood Policing division. They say they are working to provide outreach, mental health services, and enforcement when needed.San Diego residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, thanking the committee for their work but asking them to do more.Several other agencies also had presentations, providing updates on the temporary bridge shelters and the homeless storage facilities.The Select Committee on Homelessness meets one to two times a month. 1013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have arrested a 26-year-old in connection with a Logan Heights house fire that killed three of his family members last weekend.Police say Wilber Romero was arrested Friday for homicide and arson in connection with the deaths of his parents 44-year-old Jose Romero and 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero, and his sister 21-year-old Iris Romero in a house fire on Sunday. Romero's mother and sister died at the hospital in the days following the blaze while his father died in the fire. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. He has been booked into county jail and is set to arraigned on Oct. 22.On Oct. 13, the fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of Clay Ave. Firefighters had to go inside and pull the victims out.Romero, who identified himself to 10News that morning as the family's oldest son, said he awoke to find his bed on fire and tried to yell for his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," Romero said after the blaze.One witness told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through the bars in the windows, unable to escape the fire."The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm.
