SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s unemployment rate is near historic lows, but plenty of people are still out of work. 10News is exploring ways to help you improve your competitive edge in the job market. “I freelance, and I have a part-time job that has been helping me get through,” said Katie Orchard, who has been looking for full-time work for the past four months. Orchard is in search of stability, but in a competitive job market, that search becomes more difficult. However, the employment rate in San Diego is also down. With a job market continually changing, how do you improve your edge and stand out?According to Allie Barara and Dana Ellison, both recruiters at Creative Circle in San Diego, the key to standing out, is your resume. It’s kinda like that black hole of the unknown once you submit your resume,” said Allie Barara. Barara says, job candidates need to be specific with programs and software. “I think what a lot of people miss on their resume, is that they don’t spell out the specific softwares they are proficient in. I think showing that at the top of their resume is really going to highlight and give you those extra buzzwords,” said Barara. Another way to make your resume stand out is including or obtaining certificates in your specific field of interest. But also the specific softwares and CMS’ will really stick out to employers. They want you to have the experience, but having that certification to back it up, will also go a long way as well,” Barara said. According to Dana Ellison, a senior recruiter, a common mistake job seekers make is not applying for the right job.“I say titles are a little nebulous. If you see a job and say hey this describes all the skill sets I do, but it’s not how I’m marketing myself, that would be a great way to start,” said Ellison. Ellison also suggests job seekers ditch the fluff words to make room for things that matter. “If someone says they are a good communicator, a team player, a fast learner, those are things literally everyone says, so those things can be left off,” said Ellison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, Americans mourned the death of Congressman John Lewis after his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.Lewis, a Democrat who represented Georgia's 5th Congressional district for 17 years, was part of the "Big Six" civil rights activists who organized the March on Washington in 1963.In San Diego, the civil rights icon is also remembered through two unique ties.RELATED: U.S. flags at half-staff in memory of Rep. John LewisA little more than a year ago, Lewis was donning protective gear to weld his initials into his namesake ship at a San Diego shipyard. On May 13, 2019, Lewis pulled welding gloves over his hands to fuse his initials into the keel plate of the USNS John Lewis at the General Dynamics Shipyard — the lead ship in a class of oiler vessels.Consistent with his commitment to non-violence, the ships will be non-combat vessels but play a vital role in refueling other ships at sea."For the U.S. Navy and former Secretary Ray Mabus to see fit to honor me in this way is unreal and almost unimaginable," Lewis said in a statement last year. "I only try to do what is fair, what is right, and what is just and get in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego's next thrill ride has been given the all clear by the state.The California Coastal Commission Wednesday approved the park's request for a dive coaster called Mako, set to open at the park next year. The roller coaster is already being billed as the "tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in California," and the only floorless dive coaster in the state.The San Diego City Council gave the 153-foot ride unanimous approval last April, allowing SeaWorld to exceed the city's 30-foot height limitation in coastal zones.RELATED: SeaWorld San Diego brings back its popular annual SoCal PassSeaWorld says construction on Mako should begin in the next few months.The ride, announced in January, will be constructed by Switzerland-based Bollinger & Mabillard. Floorless cars will hold 18 riders at a time in three six-person rows. SeaWorld will build the attraction next to the Journey to Atlantis ride, where a parking lot currently sits.As an educational add, the ride will also focus on shark awareness and conservation and include a partnership with a shark conservation organization.Mako is set to debut following the park's Electric Eel ride and Tidal Twister coaster opened this summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Shoppers in Del Mar Heights are checking their receipts after learning through a social media app that some merchants are charging more sales tax than they should. Last year the City of Del Mar raised its sales tax to 8.75 percent, but the tax rate only applies to businesses within the city.  The problem arose when some businesses that share Del Mar's zip code, but get San Diego services, mistakenly charged the higher Del Mar rate. San Diego's sales tax is 7.75 percent. David did not want to give his last name, but he checked his receipt for the Jack in the Box restaurant in the beachside shopping center and discovered he'd been charged the higher tax rate, an extra 8-cents. David didn't complain to management and told us 8-cents wasn't a big set-back but did say he believed the problem should be corrected.  Several of his neighbors posted comments on the Nextdoor social media site about other establishments doing the same thing. 10News made purchases at three stores and found they charged the correct sales tax, but when we bought a salad and iced tea from Jack in the Box, we were charged at the Del Mar rate of 8.75 percent, just like David.  Another customer who did not want his name used also shared a receipt showing he paid at the higher rate. He also had a receipt dated April 24 of this year, showing he overpaid sales tax to the Del Mar Wine Company in the same shopping center. A spokesman for Jack in the Box told 10News the franchise made an honest mistake and re-set its cash registers to reflect the correct sales tax. A clerk at the wine store told 10News to email the manager.  As of this posting, he had not responded. 10News Contacted the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.  Spokesman Paul Cambra explained that Del Mar was one of the few pockets of California that have a "zip code split".  Cambra called it a common problem when zip code boundaries don't match city boundaries. In an email to 10News Cambra wrote:"If a taxpayer overcharges, we will tell them to either return it to the customer or remit it to the CDTFA. If they have undercharged, they will still owe the tax, and depending on when they remit it, they may also be charged interest and penalties." Cambra noted that no consumer complaints about being overcharged had come from the 92014 zip code. Consumers are encouraged to know the sales tax in the communities where they shop. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego restaurants are taking extra precautions, and going out of their way to care for the most vulnerable neighbors during the stay at home order.Victor Lopez, owner of El Pollo Grill, said he's delivering free meals to seniors in need. "Today we're actually going to send 10 more right now," Lopez said. They've served about 90 customers in three days. When it comes to the bill, he's paying about 70 percent and donations are covering the rest.LISTINGS: Who is open for business in San Diego during stay-at-home order"We have the food, we have the resources, we have a little money left over so we're willing to take the hit," Lopez said. The hit right now is 30 percent, but Lopez said the 37 year old business is focused on community. Across town, D.Z. Akin's is also worried about their customers, "we try between every customer to sanitize ourselves, sanitize the pens, sanitize the counters." Son of the founders, Elan Akin, said he often sees an older crowd.Customers, like Philip McCabe, say they normally see more people. The lunch rush Wednesday mean about 7 people standing in the deli with lots of space in between. It was founded by a couple who fell in love at an LA butcher shop.They've expanded their College Area business five times and enjoyed some famous diners, from Tony Gwynn, to Alex Trebek.
