For the ladies in this gym, age isn't the number that matters most. "I’m going to be building up to 200. I want to get that done before I’m 80 years old,” says 78-year-old Bonnie Thurston on how much she can deadlift. Thurston says she’s been active her whole life, but never thought she would powerlift. Seven years ago, Thurston struggled with osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, increasing risk of fractures. Then, Thurston found a powerlifting group for seniors. "I now weigh more than I weighed when I started this, but I wear the same size clothes, and the reason is I have stronger bones and larger bones and more muscle in my body than I did when I started this," she says. These group of seniors deadlift; they bench and they pull sleds. And while Thurston is doing all of this, she pushes 80. Thurston is not even the oldest person at the gym. Edith Murway-Traina is a member and is 97 years old. “I've always had muscles, I just had to learn to use them," she says. Bill Beekley leads the group. He's trained powerlifters since the 90s. "Don't be intimidated by what these ladies are doing, because they all started just moving their bodies," Beekley says. He says lifting correctly can help increase bone density and fight conditions like osteoporosis. It also helps these women in everyday life. "It's very functional,” the instructor says. “Some say they can carry their groceries a little easier now and don't need help getting groceries in an out of the car.” For 97-year-old Murway-Traina, she says that movement is so important as she nears 100. “The more you move, the more exercise you get, the more your body responds,” she says. Murway-Traina says she was nervous about the idea of powerlifting at first, but she now does it three times a week. "When you start being too old for something, you are too old for something, you have to know you are capable of doing what you want to make yourself do," Murway-Traina says. Research agrees. A JAMA study found physical activity in later life is linked to a lower risk of dying, even in older people who haven't been very active.Murway-Traina wants other seniors not to let the weight of getting older stop them from giving this a try. 2253

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed on a Winnipeg radio station that the Canada-U.S. border would remain closed to non-essential travel until the United States lowers its COVID-19 infections. In September, it was announced that the border would reopen on Oct. 21. However, the steady increase of positive COVID-19 cases – which has reached 7.9 million, according to data from John's Hopkins – has extended the reopening date. There are now over 200,000 deaths due to the virus, the CDC reports. “We have committed to keeping Canadians safe and we keep extending the border closures because the States is not in a place where we would feel comfortable reopening those borders,” Trudeau told the radio station, as reported in Bloomberg. “We will continue to make sure that Canadian safety is top of mind when we move forward. We see the cases in the United States and elsewhere around the world, and we need to continue to keep these border controls in place,” he added.Travel restrictions do not apply to air, freight rail, or sea travel between both countries. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With intricate, meticulous designs, one look and you’d think Newport News resident Karen Freidt has been baking for years."I've never cooked this much in my whole life," she stated.The recent NASA retiree turned pie sculpture, is turning heads with her new and very detailed hobby. She says the calling to create came to her in a dream."Something woke me up and it was like September 3rd, on your way home, out of your name into your color," she described. So Karen says she wrote down the dream in her phone. "One one of the things I thought about is how can I help others with my art ," said Freidt.After battling pneumonia and being confined to her home during COVID-19 she whipped up a few the tasty treats and posted the edible art on Facebook."The first two pies I posted on Facbeook went viral within a couple days," she said. Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. As activists march through cities across the country, some protests that started off peaceful have ultimately ended in violence and looting. Now, more businesses have taken notice and are taking action. “These are the boards we have here,” said Joe Quintana who works at a souvenir shop in downtown Denver. After several neighboring businesses were broken into, Quintana’s boss decided to board up his business. “It takes time and more money to do this but trying to keep the safety out here,” he said. Construction crews are now working around the clock, protecting properties with plywood. “It can be hectic having to put this stuff up on a regular basis,” said handyman Jeffrey Berlin, who is reluctantly cashing in on the chaos. After being out of work for months due to COVID-19 concerns, Berlin is taking whatever jobs he can get, including boarding up buildings like Starbucks coffee shops. “I’d like to have a lot more (work) but I don’t want to get it under these circumstances,” he said. These circumstances have caused more businesses to board up their properties including some that recently reopened during this pandemic. “We’re just trying to stay safe because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Cody Kluck, who manages Osteria Marco. Just days after coronavirus restrictions were lifted, Kluck had to board up in fear of looters. “It’s like a false sense of security,” he said. “But I mean it will keep hopefully a brick or something from going through a window and people coming into our restaurant.”As protesters continue to call for social change across the country, others are now asking activists to alter their tactics saying protests should be done peacefully. 1708

The price and release date of the next PlayStation console was revealed Wednesday.During the PlayStation 5 showcase, Sony announced that the PS5 will launch on Nov. 12 in the US, Japan, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea.
