WASHINGTON — As COVID-19 cases skyrocketed before the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the coordinator of the White House coronavirus response warned Americans to “be vigilant” and to limit celebrations to “your immediate household.” For many Americans that guidance has been difficult to abide, including for Dr. Deborah Birx herself. The day after Thanksgiving, Birx traveled to one of her vacation properties on Fenwick Island in Delaware. She was accompanied by three generations of her family from two households. Kathleen Flynn, whose brother is married to Birx's daughter, told the Associated Press she came forward about the travel out of concern for her own parents, and acknowledged there was family friction over the incident. Birx confirmed to the Associated Press she traveled to the Delaware property, but declined to be interviewed for the report. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has asked Americans not to travel over the holidays and discourages indoor activity involving members of different households.Birx joins a growing list of high-profile leaders on the federal and state level who have been criticized for appearing to disregard their own rules and warnings for slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Most notably, California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is facing a recall effort in his state after he was seen inside a posh restaurant after telling people to avoid socializing. 1423

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is quietly amending its execution protocols, no longer requiring federal death sentences to be carried out by lethal injection and clearing the way for other methods like firing squads and poison gas. The amended rule, published Friday in the Federal Register, allows the U.S. government to conduct executions by lethal injection or use “any other manner prescribed by the law of the state in which the sentence was imposed.” A number of states allow other methods of execution. The amendment to the "manner of Federal Executions" rule gives federal prosecutors a wider variety of options for execution to avoid delays if the state in which the inmate was sentenced doesn't provide other alternatives. The change also suggests that if the state where the crime occurred does not permit death sentences, a judge can designate another state with those laws and utilize their facilities to carry out the execution, according to CNN.The rule change will take effect in about a month. It remains unclear whether the Justice Department will seek to use any methods other than lethal injection for upcoming executions. On Monday, South Carolina prison officials said they have to delay an execution scheduled for Friday because they won't be able to obtain the lethal injection drugs needed. The South Carolina Supreme Court scheduled Richard Bernard Moore's execution for Friday after he exhausted his federal appeals. Moore has spent nearly two decades on death row for his conviction in the 1999 fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk in Spartanburg County. The South Carolina Department of Corrections said in a letter to the state Supreme Court last week that it won't be able to find drugs by Friday. They have not been able to secure the drugs since their last stock expired in 2013. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter. There are 28 states that allow federal and state executions, lethal injection is the primary manner of execution. At least nine of those states, according to CNN, allow for alternative methods such as electrocution, lethal gas, firing squad and hanging. 2136

WASHINGTON (AP) — More police officers have died in the line of duty this year in the United States than in 2017, according to data released Thursday. Most were killed by gunfire, and vehicular accidents claimed nearly as many officers' lives. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said in a report that 144 federal, state and local officers have died so far in 2018. That figure represents roughly a 12 percent increase from the 129 who died in 2017.The majority of the officers who died were either shot — 52 this year, up from 46 in 2017 — or fatally injured in car or motorcycle crashes, which accounted for 50 deaths. Other fatalities involved heart attacks, strokes, drownings and cancer and other illnesses among those who responded to the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.Of the officers who were shot, eight were killed during investigative activity and six were killed while responding to calls of a domestic or public disturbance, according to the report. Two were shot while serving warrants, two died while handling or transporting prisoners and two others were inadvertently shot by other officers.Craig Floyd, the fund's chief executive officer, called the increase in deaths disappointing after a decline in 2017."Sadly this reminds us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price," Floyd said in a statement. "We must never take the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers for granted, and we must remember the families of the fallen who are left behind."Of the officers who died in traffic-related incidents, 32 were killed in crashes involving another vehicle and 14 were struck while outside their vehicle. An additional four were killed in a motorcycle accident. The officers who died in 2018 include a sheriff's deputy in Sacramento County, California, killed in a shootout at an auto parts store; a Greensboro, North Carolina, police officer killed in a car crash while responding to a call for a robbery; and a Greene County, Missouri, sheriff's deputy who drowned when his car was swept away by water. The states that experienced the highest number of officer fatalities were Texas, California, Florida and New York, where eight died. 2214

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than a million Americans sought unemployment benefits last week. That's the word from a Labor Department report that indicates companies are cutting more jobs as the coronavirus surges through the Sunbelt and some of the nation’s most populous states. Layoffs in Florida, Georgia and California rose by tens of thousands. The number of laid-off workers seeking assistance remained stuck at 1.3 million. That number is lower than the previous week but still illustrates the devastation wrought by widespread shutdowns. The U.S. has now suffered 17 straight weeks of jobless claims in the millions as the country continues to combat the novel coronavirus.Case counts are rising in 40 states and 22 states have either paused or reversed their efforts to reopen their economies, according to Bank of America. 832
