DETROIT — Michigan sheriffs will let be letting parents know when their child is involved in a traffic stop. The Michigan Sheriffs' Association has partnered with State Farm to automate the S.T.O.P.P.E.D Program. S.T.O.P.P.E.D, or Sheriffs Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers, is a voluntary program for parents who would like to be notified when their child is involved in a traffic stop by a sheriff's deputy. Parents do have to register to ensure they’re part of the program.And while some sheriff’s departments have been doing this for a few years, what’s new is that parents can now get a text if they are in Livingston or Mason counties. S.T.O.P.P.E.D Livingston and Mason Counties were selected to pilot the program.The idea is simple — if your son or daughter is pulled over and you’re signed up, the sheriff’s office will send a text 48 hours after they write the ticket. That delay is to make sure they have a chance to tell you themselves.In the past, the S.T.O.P.P.E.D program sent letters via mail. Deterring kids from the streets is a challenge many communities around the country are dealing with, but Howard Cato has a very specific plan to do just that. Cato started a summer camp, where he takes kids to a BMX bike track, teaching them the basics of the sport.“BMX, bicycle motocross,” he explains. “What I do is, we race bikes.”For Cato, BMX was all about the thrill.“Oh man, it’s the adrenaline,” he says, grinning.But looking back on the hobby he picked up in his childhood, he realizes now that it was more than that; BMX gave him a hobby that kept him off the streets—that is until his father died.“I stopped racing BMX. I found the streets, going out there on the streets, man, and leaving my bikes,” he says. “And I ended up getting shot several times and paralyzed.”Eventually he found his way back. These days, he’s making sure kids in his hometown of Oakland have a chance to learn the skill that set him on the right track.Cato started the program Flood the Streets with Bikes, which aims to provide bikes to kids who don’t have them. The Air Force said that medical and operations communities will apply an anthropometric screening process to individual applicants for placement in an aircraft they can safely fly as they pursue a rated track. The Air Force says that its previous requirement eliminated about 44% of female applicants age 20 to 29. “Historically, most of our aircraft were engineered around the height of an average male, not females,” said Lt. Col. Jessica Ruttenber, Air Force mobility planner and programmer and team leader on the Women’s Initiative Team.Government data says that the average American adult woman stands 63.8 inches tall, while the average man in the US stands 69.3 inches. The Air Force had a waiver process that allowed applicants who didn’t meet height requirements the opportunity to be considered, but the Air Force said that the process could have scared off applicants. “While most height waivers were approved under the old system, feedback indicated the entire waiver process served as a barrier, which negatively impacted female rated accessions,” said Lt.
