The banana phone is back.A startup that licenses the Nokia phone brand has unveiled a new version of the 8110, a curved mobile phone that was first released in 1996 and featured in "The Matrix."The phone, which is offered in banana yellow and black, will sell for €79 (). It comes loaded with a new version of the game Snake, Finnish startup HMD said in a statement."This is a return to the glory years of Nokia," said Ian Fogg, senior analyst at IHS Markit. "But it also includes all the new technology."The 8110 comes with 4G, and a handful of apps including Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter. But it doesn't have a flashy operating system and users won't be able to download other popular apps.Fogg said that basic -- or "feature" -- phones are appealing because they are reliable, and can run for a long time on a single charge. The 8110 goes 25 days in standby mode, for example.Nokia used to be the world's largest maker of mobile phones, but it struggled to adapt to the era of smartphones and compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung.Microsoft purchased the company's handset business in 2013, but later unwound the deal. Nokia now focuses on making technology for telecommunications networks.HMD, which has licensed the Nokia brand since 2016, sold over 70 million handsets in 2017, according to IHS. That puts its sales, on an annualized basis, in the same league as Sony and Lenovo."HMD's strategy clearly aims to return Nokia to be a mobile market leader, even if it's too early for HMD to realistically target displacing Samsung or Apple," Fogg said.Nokia marketed the original 8110 as "the first of its kind in terms of its ergonomics." The Asian giant hornet first made waves this spring when it appeared in the United States. Discovered in Washington State, some dubbed it the murder hornet, but since then, entomologists have been feverishly trying to eradicate it."Quite a bit has happened. First, we had an initial planning with our AFS counterparts and also our counterparts in Canada who are having detections of their own. We formulated one or two different plans and put one or two of them into action," says Sven-Erik Spichiger, the Managing Entomologist at the Washington State Department of Agriculture.The Asian giant hornet is the world's largest hornet. It's more than two inches long, and queens can be even bigger. They feed on honey bees, attacking and killing tens of thousands of them at a time.Last November, beekeeper Ted McFall was blown away when he discovered one of his strongest hives had been attacked."Every time I go and check my hives, I kind of have a bad feeling when I start thinking about the Asian giant hornets that are somewhat establishing nests in the woods around me because I think to myself, 'Which one of these colonies is going to get it? Next time I come out here, am I going to show up and there's going to be bee heads everywhere and just bee carnage everywhere?' It's a very unsettling feeling," says McFall.The Asian giant hornet has been spotted and caught near McFall's property. Spichiger says the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the surrounding community have been hard at work setting traps."We have an excellent public survey going on with over 1,000 traps established by just members of the general public. This is very heartwarming to me because it means everyone is taking it very seriously and going above and beyond to help us look for new detections of this invasive pest," says Spichiger.Spichiger says so far, one has been discovered just over the Canadian border and three in Whatcom County in Washington State. Two of those discovered were queens, which is crucial since the Asian giant hornet hive can't survive without its queen. There have also been two cases where people were likely stung by an Asian giant hornet."She described being stung as having hot tacks driven into her flesh... What she described seeing in the yard earlier that day sounded like an Asian giant hornet. Again, it's an unconfirmed report, but we believe it happened," says Spichiger."Beekeepers have all types of bee equipment and protection against bees but this is totally useless against the Asian giant hornet. The Asian giant hornet can poke his stinger right through here. Even if I wore two of them," says McFall.As for whether Washington State agriculture officials feel they're closer to eradicating the Asian giant hornet, Spichiger says: "Eradication is going to be a long process. We will only know for sure if we¡¯ve been successful if we have three years of all negative surveys and nobody turns any in. So from a realistic sense, no, I¡¯m three years away."Still, the capture of the Asian giant hornets, including the two queens, is progress.McFall has 16 traps set up within a mile of his hives. He's on high alert, hoping none of his honey bees get attacked again."This is a [container] with orange juice and rice wine. They'll smell it and go through the hole. That hole is a little bit narrower than 3/4 inch and then they'll go in and not find their way out. They'll try and fly out and not be able to get out," says McFall.The traps are the same used by entomologists at the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Entomologists will be setting another 40 live traps near the most recent sighting. They're hoping to catch a live Asian giant hornet and tag it so they can track it to their nest. 3747

The 29th named tropical system of the Atlantic hurricane season formed on Monday, marking a new yearly record for the basin.Subtropical Storm Theta formed over the open waters of the eastern Atlantic Monday evening, packing top winds of 50 mph. The storm is far from any land, and does not pose any immediate threat to land.Theta marks the deepest jaunt down the Greek hurricane naming list. Theta is the seventh storm this season named after a letter in the Greek alphabet. The only other time the Greek alphabet has been used was in 2005.Theta is not the only storm churning in the Atlantic basin. Tropical Storm Eta is spinning in the Gulf of Mexico after striking the Florida Keys yesterday. The slow-moving system is expected to dump heavy rain over Florida over the next few days. Whether it comes ashore again is still in question.Eta previously struck Central America as a powerful Category 4 hurricane last week.The Atlantic hurricane season still has another three weeks to go, and it¡¯s not unheard of for a system to develop in December if conditions are favorable, like they have been for much of 2020. 1123

Teachers in the San Diego Unified School District say they may have to strike if they can't reach an agreement on a new contract with the district."It's not something we ever want to do," says Lindsay Burningham with the San Diego Education Association, the union that represents teachers. "But it's something that we will do if the district doesn't show the respect our students and educators deserve."Teachers first brought up the threat of a strike at this month's school board meeting, where they urged board members to hear their demands.The two sides have been in negotiations since June when the last contract expired. Since then, teachers in the district have been working without a contract. SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas (KGTV) -- At least 26 people are dead and dozens more injured after a shooting at a church in Texas Sunday morning, according to ABC News.KSAT identified the shooter as Devin Kelley of New Braunfels, Tex. He reportedly fled the scene and is dead after a brief pursuit. ABC News reported Kelley has no known ties to terrorism.The shooting took place at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, which is located about 35 miles east of San Antonio, according to ABC affiliate KSAT.RELATED: Who is Devin Kelley, Texas church suspect?A witness reported seeing a man walk into the church around 11:30 a.m. and open fire.The victims ranged from 5 to 72 years old.
