SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A GoFundMe is attempting to raise money for a church that helps homeless teenagers. The Missiongathering Church in North Park was shut down this week after more than two dozen violations were handed to them by the city. In addition to being a shelter, the church also rents out the property as a music and sanctuary venue called “The Irenic.”The City of San Diego says the church never received clearance to do that. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime dropped in San Diego County in the first half of the year for the first time in six years, even though the region saw a spike in the number of homicides, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments.The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,356 in 2020, down from 5,545 last year.Mid-year violent crime totals from recent years were 5,510 in 2018; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounted to a 4% bump in violent crime.The report found there were 52 homicides in the first half of 2020, a dramatic increase from 38 homicides measured at the halfway point last year.A month-by-month breakdown of the homicides this year showed that seven were recorded in January, three in February, 11 each in March and April, and 10 each in May and June. In 2019, January had five homicides, February had six, March and April each had six homicides, May had eight and June had seven.Among homicides in which motive could be determined, 22% were attributed to robbery -- compared to 4% last year -- and 3% were attributed to gangs -- down from 19% last year, according to the report. No homicides were attributed to domestic violence this year, while 19% of last year's homicide were considered domestic violence-related.The report also found that overall domestic violence cases reported to law enforcement in 2020 increased each month from January through March, then decreased slightly in April and May before rising 3% in June, compared to the same time in 2019."The zig-zag percentages of reports in domestic violence regionwide could be attributed to the pandemic," SANDAG director of research and program management Cynthia Burkem said. "When you factor in social distancing, including families isolating together during stressful times and with less contact with mandated reporters, it could affect an individual's willingness to report a crime to police."Reports of rape fell to 432 after reaching 539 at the midway point of 2019. Further analysis showed the biggest month-to-month changes from this year compared to last year were seen in April and May.The number of reported robberies dropped 10% -- from 1,410 in 2019 to 1,268 this year -- while the number of aggravated assaults increased 1% -- from 3,572 in 2019 to 3,604 this year.Reports of property crime totaled 24,512 in the first half of this year, down from 27,239 during the same period in 2019.In 2020, 3,624 burglaries were reported throughout the county, a 3% drop from the first half of 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ring doorbell video could provide the break in the strange disappearance of rent checks in North Park.A noise caused Ken Frederick to scramble from his home just past midnight Saturday, downstairs to his business, a property management company on 30th Street. He found junk mail - removed from his mailbox - coated with a sticky substance. He ended up near the front door and found a lone check that a tenant had dropped into the overnight mail slot. He checked his surveillance video, which showed a man in a hoodie appearing to jam some sort of stick-like object into the mail slot, before he removes it and takes off."We feel violated, like someone coming into your home," said Frederick.Frederick dug into his other Ring videos and found one from early last Wednesday morning. It appeared to be the same man, same hoodie, and same stick. This time, after he takes the stick out, he appears to put something in his pocket."If you know somebody's been in your business, it makes you feel insecure," said Frederick.Frederick is checking with his tenants to see if any rent checks put in the slot have disappeared. Another property management company nearby tells 10News they have had about ten rent checks vanish since June.As for the sticky substance, it's a familiar one. In the past year, 10News has reported on thieves 'fishing' checks with glue traps out of local postal collection boxes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog walk in South Park turned frantic as a couple tries to fend off a bee attack that didn't end when they got inside their home.Grape Street, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Patricia Young, her husband, and two dogs were near Marlton drive, just about done with their walk, when one of the dogs started sniffing a bush."All of a sudden I felt a really sharp stabbing in my arm. Then I heard buzzing near my eye and swatted at it. That’s when my husband started to get stung," said Young.Young says she didn’t see a swarm but heard a constant, loud buzzing."My husband is swatting and his glasses fall of. I pick them up, and he’s getting attacked ... Take my mask off and swing it around my back, and I get stung on my back," said Young.Young says her husband picked up one of the dogs, and they scrambled to get home, about 2 blocks away."We’re kind of yelping and squealing and swatting, and then get home, and it's that sense of, 'We’re safe,'" said Young,Not so fast. Inside the home, she found a bee on one of the dogs, and then one in the bathroom."When I came out to the kitchen, the bees were congregating in the light in the kitchen," said Young.In the end, they killed about eight bees. Their nine-year-old Maltese mix had to be treated by a veterinarian for a possible sting. Both Young and her husband stung several times"It's a freaky, terrible thing to be chased by bees into your home," said Young.Jeff Lutz, the owner of Bee Best Bee Removal, says a two-block chase is unusual, adding that "hot temperature can make bees more active," as they bring in water to keep the hive cool.It’s unclear if the bees were Africanized bees, which would require a DNA test to determine.Lutz says bee removal calls are down significantly this year but attributes that to the impact of COVID-19. 1812

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego County schools will receive grant funding from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, it was announced Friday.The foundation, launched in 2006 by NASCAR driver and El Cajon-native Jimmie Johnson and his wife, Chandra Johnson, plans to award 8,000 in grants to seven public schools in the Johnsons' home states of California and Oklahoma and where they currently live in North Carolina.San Diego's Knox Middle School will receive ,206.37 to improve the school's library and WD Hall Elementary School in El Cajon will receive ,096.71 to add a multi-lingual, digital marquee to the school's campus.
