SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just days after her 97th birthday, a San Diego woman was honored for being a trailblazer in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Maj. Grace Carle's love for her country is apparent in her impressive resume. The retired Marine served during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam."She's always been a strong woman. She did what she was told to do, and she did it with honor. She wanted to be proud of what she did," said Jennie Larsen, Carle's niece. Carle was one of nine siblings and joined the Marine Corps when she was 20. She's now the last living Sergeant Major of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and was one of only six women to hold the position. "When she went in she worked hard to get all of her advancements, and it's things like giving the women a chance to do jobs that the men had been doing and showing that the women were capable of holding these same positions and doing the same type of work," said Larsen.Carle was recently admitted to Somerset Subacute and Care, where social worker Lisa Abbott met the retired Marine. "When they told me she was a big deal in the Marines, I started googling her!" Abbott said.Carle will soon be entering hospice care, so Abbott decided they needed to honor her. "Somebody like Ms. Carle who's done so much for our country, and for America, and for women in general, this is going to be probably our last chance to thank her and honor her. While she's with us, we're going to take that opportunity," said Abbott. They held a ceremony for Carle at the facility, which included taps by Bugles Across America."The Marine life was her life, and she was very proud to serve this country, you couldn't have asked for a better person," said Larsen.Larsen says her aunt served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lifeguards say a swimmer who disappeared early Saturday in Pacific Beach has been found safe.San Diego Lifeguards say four friends went into the ocean around 1:30 a.m. across from the Ocean Blvd. and Garnet Ave. beach entrance. But one of the friends did not return, prompting searches throughout the morning by U.S. Coast Guard and lifeguard crews.Later Saturday, the missing person was located safe at a friend's house, the Coast Guard told 10News.The swimmer was reportedly celebrating his 21st birthday at the nearby Waterbar before the group went for a swim, according to San Diego Lifeguard Lieutenant Rich Stropky.Though the group told lifeguards the water was only waist deep in the area they were swimming, the swimmer somehow became separated. The person's clothes, wallet, and phone were also left behind when the group returned to shore, Stropky said.Saturday morning, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter and helicopter assisted in the search. 972

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mesa Biotech, based in San Diego, has received FDA approval for its rapid COVID-19 tests that can produce results in about half-an-hour.“Our first kits are going out today to some of the health systems, county health departments, to validate the performance against the existing testing,” said Laura Dullanty, a marketing manager at Mesa Biotech. She said it will still take a few weeks before they will be able to deploy them widely to the health care providers who have requested the tests. Even that's been a challenge to plan that,” said Dullanty. “We’re staggering shifts, taking time in between, cleaning the area well.” Right now, most tests are performed on-site then sent to a lab for processing. It can take several days or longer before a patient knows the results.
